ABSTRACT As part of an ongoing audit of Australian reptiles, specimens of the endemic Western Australian dragon species, Jackyhosersaur superba (Storr, 1974), known to most herpetologists as “Diporiphora superba Storr, 1974” were inspected from all parts of the known range. A population from the Manning Creek Gorge area of the Kimberley in Western Australia were found to be morphologically divergent and so are formally described herein as a new subspecies. Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT – The Western Australian Museum holds a vast collection of specimens representing a large portion of the 106 currently recognised taxa of dragon lizards (family Agamidae) known to occur across Australia. While the museum’s collection is dominated by Western Australian species, it also contains a selection of specimens from localities in other Australian states and a small selection from outside of Australia. Currently the museum’s collection contains 18,914 agamid specimens representing 89 of the 106 currently recognised taxa from across Australia and 27 from outside of Australia. This includes 824 type specimens representing 45 currently recognised taxa and three synonymised taxa, comprising 43 holotypes, three syntypes and 779 paratypes. Of the paratypes, a total of 43 specimens have been gifted to other collections, disposed or could not be located and are considered lost. An annotated catalogue is provided for all agamid type material currently and previously maintained in the herpetological collection of the Western Australian Museum. The value of the information derived from these analyses depends on the relevance of the landscape representation (or model) used to the landscape and fauna of interest. Discrete representations dominate analyses of landscape context in disturbed and regenerating landscapes; however within-patch variation suggests that continuous representations may help explain the distribution of fauna in such landscapes. Objectives: We tested the relevance of binary, mosaic, and continuous conceptualisations of landscape context to reptiles in regenerating dryland landscapes. Methods: For each of thirteen reptile groups, we compared the fit of models consisting of one landscape composition and one landscape heterogeneity variable for each of six landscape representations (2 x binary, 2 x mosaic, and 2 x continuous), at three buffer distances. We used Akaike weights to assess the relative support for each model. Maps were created from Landsat satellite images. -

Advancing and protecting the interests of cattle producers in the Northern Territory M e m b e r - National Farmers’ Federation & Cattle Council of Australia Executive Summary The Covid-19 pandemic has created substantial economic hardship and opportunity for the Northern Territory. The pastoral sector has been largely insulated from the impacts of Covid-19 because of the way the industry is structured. It has, despite increasing regulatory and administrative costs, managed to keep its input costs to a minimum. Low input costs proved the foundation of the resilience which kept the 10,000 people directly and indirectly employed during what is the industry’s peak time. While there are many opportunities and requirements which can assist the Territory rebuild itself, this submission focuses on two immediate opportunities. We have included the NTCA’s overall election policy platform, which may seem outside this scope, but feed into broader debates around accelerated approvals and cumbersome regulation. We also attach some statistical data which reinforces the benefit of the Roads of Strategic Stimulus Importance we wish to see. The Roads of Strategic Stimulus Importance is not just for the benefit of the cattle industry but also the resources (mining and onshore gas) and the tourism sector. These are wealth generating infrastructure suggestions designed to ensure that the productivity of the Territory economy can be dramatically improved. We are seeking a $535 million injection of funds into key roads over a five-year period. This will create 3,000 jobs and unlock the true productivity potential of regional and remote Northern Territory. -
Trip Report: Victoria River District
Trip report: Victoria River District Micha Jackson and Amanda Lilleyman 31st July – 4th August 2020 The Victoria River District is one of the most lovely and most accessible birding spots in the Top End, situated about 500km south of Darwin on the Victoria Highway, which eventually ends up in northeastern WA. We scheduled our trip to arrive at the Katherine Poo Ponds on Friday afternoon, hoping for views of the first-ever Citrine Wagtail in the Northern Territory. There we met up with Katherine local birder- extraordinaire Marc Gardner, who had found the bird the previous weekend. We were also met by a group of local Darwin birders, Katherine locals, some visiting birdwatchers from interstate and some very keen twitchers that drove up from Alice Springs. So, there we were, scopes and bins lined up against the fence of the poo ponds scanning for a wagtail. But as goes with twitching, we did not find the wagtail. We dipped. Instead we were treated to an assortment of waterbirds using the sewage works, and also some interesting bush birds just behind us, including a Grey Fantail (a dry season migrant in low numbers in the Top End), Arafura Fantail, Shining Flycatcher, Leaden Flycatcher, Paperbark Flycatcher, Willie Wagtail and awesome views of a Collared Sparrowhawk (ebird list: https://ebird.org/checklist/S71972922). We counted all birds at the site until it was dark and then decided on dinner at the Golf Club before retiring to our camp at Shady Lane on Gorge Road. The next morning, we were up early to meet Marc and others to search for Crested Shrike-tit on the Central Arnhem Highway, and we had great success with one stunning individual (northern subspecies lifer for Amanda). -

BIOGEOGRAPHY AND PHYLOGENY OF THE SQUAMATA This review summarises the current hypotheses of the origin, antiquity and history of the order Squamata, the dominant living reptile group which comprises the lizards, snakes and worm-lizards. The primary concern here is with the broad relationships and origins of the major taxa rather than with local distributional or phylogenetic patterns within Australia. In our review of the phylogenetic hypotheses, where possible we refer principally to data sets that have been analysed by cladistic methods. Analyses based on anatomical morphological data sets are integrated with the results of karyotypic and biochemical data sets. A persistent theme of this chapter is that for most families there are few cladistically analysed morphological data, and karyotypic or biochemical data sets are limited or unavailable. Biogeographic study, especially historical biogeography, cannot proceed unless both phylogenetic data are available for the taxa and geological data are available for the physical environment. Again, the reader will find that geological data are very uncertain regarding the degree and timing of the isolation of the Australian continent from Asia and Antarctica. In most cases, therefore, conclusions should be regarded very cautiously. The number of squamate families in Australia is low. Five of approximately fifteen lizard families and five or six of eleven snake families occur in the region; amphisbaenians are absent. Opinions vary concerning the actual number of families recognised in the Australian fauna, depending on whether the Pygopodidae are regarded as distinct from the Gekkonidae, and whether sea snakes, Hydrophiidae and Laticaudidae, are recognised as separate from the Elapidae. -

Methods We assembled a database containing 551 lizard species, their phyloge- netic relationships and multiple life history and ecological variables from the lit- erature. We use phylogenetically informed statistical models to estimate the factors related to lizard productivity. Results Some, but not all, predictions of metabolic and life-history theories are supported. When analysed separately, clutch size, relative clutch mass and brood frequency are poorly correlated with body mass, but their product – productivity – is well correlated with mass. The allometry of productivity scales similarly to metabolic rate, suggesting that a constant fraction of assimilated energy is allocated to production irrespective of body size. -

Much is known about the e¡ects of intersexual selection, which operates through female mate choice, in shaping animal signals. The role of intrasexual selection has been less clear. We report on the ¢rst evidence for the coevolution of signal complexity and sexual size dimorphism (SSD), which is characteristically produced by high levels of male^male competition. We used two complementary comparative methods in order to reveal that the use of complex signals is asso- ciated with SSD in extant species and that historical increases in complexity have occurred in regions of a phylogenetic tree characterized by high levels of pre-existing size dimorphism. We suggest that signal complexity has evolved in order to improve opponent assessment under conditions of high male^male competition. Our ¢ndings suggest that intrasexual selection may play an important and previously under- estimated role in the evolution of communicative systems.
