I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract With a particular interest in birdwatchers and dog walkers, this case study explored place meanings of users at Westmount Summit Woods, a multiple-use urban forest located just west of downtown Montreal, Quebec, Canada. A document analysis was conducted on the research site, followed by data collected through online questionnaire. A total of 120 users participated in the online questionnaire, of which included birdwatchers (n=44), dog walkers (n=61), and the broader community (n=15). Three themes relating to place meaning were interpreted: (1) Attachment to and Preference for; (2) (Re)connection with Self and Others; and (3) Conflict Between and Within. Findings suggest encounters played key roles in the formation of social identity, capital, and conflict. Questions regarding access to and use of public space, how humans and animals are placed vis-à-vis one another, and ways to build civic culture out of difference were addressed. Following on from these findings, recommendations for outdoor recreation management and future research were offered.

    MODEL STUDY DESIGN FOR THE DELIMITATION OF HERITAGE SECTORS IN PROTECTED AREAS AND THE IDENTIFICATION OF CONTRIBUTING PROPERTIES Background and available data In the context of Quebec’s participation in the Canadian Register of Historic Places (CRHP), the Heritage Branch of the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications du Québec (MCCQ) has been tasked with developing Statements of Significance and Statements of Value for heritage sites designated under the terms of the Cultural Property Act. These Statements of Significance will serve as tools, both for communicating with the public and in the management of sites by the MCCQ and Quebec municipalities concerned. At the same time, there exist protected areas so vast and complex (i.e., historic and natural districts, heritage areas, historic sites) that the simple formulation of a Statement of Significance cannot do them justice. In addition, the documentation of properties within protected areas is very often insufficient. In light of this, the MCCQ commissioned researchers from the Institut national de recherche scientifique (INRS) and the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) to develop a methodology for analyzing large protected areas and for identifying properties contributing to the heritage value of the area. The research team focused on three heritage sites in Montreal – two small ones and a third that covers a very large area and includes almost 350 buildings – as well as the Historic and natural district of Mount Royal, a multi-use protected area of approximately 750 hectares. Entitled Pilot project for the identification and documentation of contributing properties in heritage sectors , the study presents a methodology for identifying contributing properties related to the protected area’s defining heritage values (e.g., historic, architectural, urban-planning, landscape, archeological, symbolic, etc.) and for identifying the specific characteristics of the sectors that the protected area encompasses.

Une étude de cas de trois réservoirs, le McTavish (à ciel ouvert de 1856 à 1948), Côte-des-Neiges (de 1893 à 1938) et Vincent d’Indy (de 1915 à 1964), considère comment la forme et la fonction des réservoirs ont changé, alors qu’évoluaient les rapports entre facteurs environnementaux, moyens technologiques et préoccupations sociales dans la ville en croissance. Répondant aux avantages et défis de la topographie urbaine, ces réservoirs ont été construits sur les flancs du mont Royal. Le potentiel offert par ces réservoirs d’élargir le noyau de conservation de la montagne est exploré dans une reconsidération de leur situation dans la ceinture de sites institutionnels qui circonscrivent le cœur de ce principal paysage naturel et culturel de la ville.

BY BOB SODEN s far back as 1928, Laurentian ski pioneer Herman “Jackrabbit” Johannsen described Montreal as “unique inA being the only place on the con- tinent where good skiing can actu- ally be enjoyed in the heart of a great city.” Situated on an island in the St. Lawrence River, this storied Canadian metropolis—at one time the nation's capital and industrial engine, and still its cultural center— takes its name from Mont Royal, the three-summit mountain near the city center that was christened by Jacques Cartier in 1535. Today, Mont Royal hosts such high-profile events as Ski Tour Canada—a FIS World Cup compe- tition that brought top cross-county racers to town in March 2016—and an annual winter festival that draws tens of thousands of residents to the park at its summit.     ( THE MAKING OF WESTMOUNT, QUEBEC 1870-1929: A STUDY OF LANDSCAPE AND COMMUNITY CONSTRUCTION John Stephen Bryce Department of Geography McGiII University, Montreal December 1990 A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Geography © John Stephen Bryce, 1990 ( ( ABSTRACT This thesis analyses the making of the landscape and community of Westmount, Ouebec from 1871 to 1929, when it grew from a quiet r,Jral area into Montreal's foremost anglophone elite inner-city residential suburb. A cultural materialist approach to landscapes is adopted, viewing them analytically as a means to organize and assign existential meaning to human action towards the environment at a given time and place. The making of Westmount is placed within the context of Montreal's society in the 19th century, when rapid industrialization created massive wealth for the city's English-speaking business elite, but threatened its political domination. Westmount became the 'suburbp,r} solution' to this problem, providing a sanctuary where, by careful and pioneering use of municipal bylaws gov­ erning both land use and social conduct, a 'model' elite community and landscape was created and maintained. The degree of control obtained through the maintenance of Westmount's suburban autonomy allowed a strong expression in the landscape of a shared ideolog~' of difference and privilege.
