Jefferies, Professor of Anthropology Lexington, Kentucky 2016 Copyright © Michael Jay Stottman 2016 ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION THE MAKING AND REMAKING OF PORTLAND: THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF IDENTITY AND LANDSCAPE AT THE PORTLAND WHARF The town of Portland, Kentucky was founded over 200 years ago as a speculative venture to profit from its advantageous location at the base of the Falls of the Ohio River. The Portland Wharf was the economic and cultural heart of the town. Throughout its history, the community has experienced much change. These changes are visible in the landscape of the Portland Wharf which reflected changes in the community’s identity. Identity and landscape are topics that have been of great interest to archaeologists and this dissertation builds on previous works to examine identity as something that is reflected in the practices of people and can be unconscious, as well as overt. Identity can only become visible through contrast of differing aspects of culture, which is often created by researchers. The landscape is one place where the contrast necessary for making identity visible takes place, as it is where identities can be created, modified, and maintained. This study utilized archaeological, historical, and ethnographic data to examine changes to Portland’s identity and landscape over time. The archaeological analysis of deposits at two house lots at the Portland Wharf has allowed for a reconstruction of Portland’s historic landscape that when compared to that of Louisville created the necessary contrast to expose Portland’s independent identity. This identity was developed amongst Portland’s contentious and symbiotic relationship with Louisville and manifested in the landscape and the way privies were constructed. The process of identity continues present day, as the people of Portland reach into their past to deploy versions of history that are loosely based on events that are no longer materialized in the landscape when their identity is threatened. As the community plans to reanimate the Portland Wharf landscape to create and maintain identities based on the community’s past, archaeologists must recognize their role in the process of identity and I argue that such responsibility can and should be used for activist goals for the good of the community.     Historic Significance Photo Source: Vegetable Market on Delaware Street, 1905, Indiana Historical Society Collection 33 Monument Circle District Preservation Plan 34 Monument Circle District Preservation Plan HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE City Planning and Development Carved out of the Northwest Territory, Indiana entered the Union as the nineteenth state in 1816. The city of Indianapolis was founded in 1821 as the state capital, when the Indiana State Legisla- ture sought a central location for the city and appointed a committee to choose the site. Once the site was chosen surveyors Alexander Ralston and Elias Fordham were hired to lay out the city, which was proposed as a grid of north-south and east-west streets in a mile square plat. This plat was influenced by the Pierre L’Enfant plan for Washington, D.C., which in turn was in- spired by the royal residence of Versailles. Since Indianapolis was planned as a state capital, the plat sited the State House Square and the Court House Square equidistant from Circle Street (now Monument Circle), located in the center of the Mile Square. The Governor’s house was to be situ- ated in the circular lot framed by Circle Street, and the four city blocks framing the Circle were known as the “Governor’s Square.” Four diagonal streets radiated out from the far corners of the four blocks framing the circle. All streets of the Mile Square were 90 feet wide with the exception of Washington Street, which was 120 feet wide to accommodate its intended use as the capital’s main street. The sale of lots in the new capital city on October 8, 1821 reveal the street’s importance, as lots fronting it com- manded the highest prices.

    LOUISVILLE DOWNTOWN Revitalization Team ACTION PLAN 1 FOREWORD This Action Plan showcases the work of a 100+ member team of Louisvillians committed to accelerating downtown Louisville’s recovery following 15 months of the COVID-19 pandemic, including social justice protests, both of which changed our collective lives in downtown. On January 14, 2021, Mayor Greg Fischer announced the creation of the Downtown Revitalization Team at his annual State of the City address, laying out some of the hopes, challenges, and opportunities in the new year ahead. Mayor Fischer called on Louisvillians to reimagine, revitalize, and restore downtown to a thriving and inclusive place for residents, employers, and tourists. The Team is a diverse group of business owners, industry leaders, residents, and community partners who came together in six committees over the course of six months to tackle some of downtown’s most challenging problems. After agreeing to a charter which guided the formation of this Action Plan, committees met at least twice a month, first in small break out groups to discuss issues ranging from public safety, vacant and underutilized office space, tourism, arts & culture, diversity, equity & inclusion, small businesses, downtown residents, and the messaging and perception of downtown. During the second monthly meetings, committee leaders shared the ideas that had emerged during committee discussion, committee goals, and the action steps needed to be taken to move from concept to reality. As the depth of work increased, so did the cross-collaboration across committees, which was anchored by the guidance of the project Steering Committee, a group of twelve dedicated community leaders.

Butryb ABSTRACT We use a hedonic price model to simultaneously estimate the effects of street trees on the sales price and the time-on-market (TOM) of houses in Portland. Oregon. On average. street trees add $8870 to sales price and reduce TOM by 1.7 days. In addition. we found that the benefits of street trees spill over to neighboring houses. Because the provision and maintenance of street trees in Portland is the responsibility of adjacent property owners, our results suggest that if the provision of street trees is left solely to homeowners, then there will be too few street trees from a societal perspective. Light brunch will be served. Cheri Bryant Hamilton Family Fun Math Explosion 2018 is an activity based event with over 50 individual District 5 Councilwoman math stations for families to choose from. Each one of the math stations will have 601 West Jefferson Street a volunteer there to lead your child through a math activity.     Crescent Hill Neighborhood Plan Supplement FINAL December 2002 Goals Crescent Hill Neighborhood Plan Supplement This supplement to the Crescent Hill Neighborhood Plan will provide strategies to support this vital and diverse historic neighborhood. I. Protect the historic character of the neighborhood. Prevent demolition of historic properties. Ensure that new and infill development is compatible - in scale, density and design - with the rest of the neighborhood. 11. Protect and enhance the neighborhood's urban tree canopy by surveying existing trees in public areas, creating a plan for their maintenance and eventual replacement (as necessary) and planting more shade trees throughout the neighborhood. 111. Strengthen relationships with institutional stakeholders who hold 49% of land in Crescent Hill. IV. Support innovative transportation solutions that strengthen Crescent Hill and other neighborhoods.- Support- - alternatives to interstate travel and interstate - widening. ..- V. Make neighborhood streets and sidewalks safer for residents via sidewalk improvements, bike lanes, connect to neighboring parks, and increased traffic safety enforcement. Protect and enhance the neighborhood's connection to surrounding neighborhoods and parks. VI. Encourage continuation of a complementary mix of residential and commercial uses while utilizing effective separation to protect residential areas fiom inappropriate encroachment. Enforce regulations regarding the appropriate location, landscaping and design of parking areas. Enforce existing zoning, and change zoning to reflect current use in residential areas. Support and reinforce the neighborhood's residential character.
