By methodologically diffracting Pilipinx becoming through the public pedagogy of punk rock, this research complicates standard stories of Pilipinx identity to provoke more generative encounters with the Pilipinx diaspora in Oceania. As new materialist theory holds that social life is produced by aggregations of related events, it rejects the notion that ontological becoming is dictated by immutable systemic or structural realities. This application of new materialist ontology contributes to understandings of relationality by demonstrating how Pilipinx identity emerges out of processes of relational becoming comprised of co-constitutive discourses, movements, and materialities of human and nonhuman origin. This approach troubles conceptions of Pilipinx becoming which propose that Pilipinx bodies are racialized through the imposition of colonial mentalities and broadens these theorizations by approaching Pilipinx becoming as a relational process in which coloniality plays a part. This relational conceptualization of Pilipinx becoming is informed by how punk rock, when framed as a form of education, complicates dominant understandings of the contexts, conditions, and capacities of Pilipinx bodies. -

KRITI K A KULTURA POPULAR AS POLITICAL CULTURE: THE FATHERLAND, NATIONALIST FILMS, AND MODERNITY IN SOUTH KOREA, TAIWAN, AND THE PHILIppINES Rolando B. Tolentino Department of Film and Audio-Visual Communication University of the Philippines, Diliman [email protected] Abstract The experience of modernity results from the emergent social relations formed in liberalized market economies, which also posit as sites of newer forms of pain and suffering as especially experienced by those in the margins. As national economies undergo liberalization to survive in globalization, so are their political structures reshaped to become conducive to transnational capital. The essay discusses the relationship of the state and civil society in a postcolonial national setting, looking into their operations and parameters in the South Korean film A Single Spark. The analysis of the effects of the state and civil society in issues of citizenship and urban being is discussed in the Taiwanese film Super Citizen Ko. The transformation of the national into the transnational state and civil society is discussed in the Philippine film Eskapo. An In-depth Study on the Film Industry In the Philippines Submitted by: Dr. Leonardo Garcia, Jr. Project Head and Ms. Carmelita Masigan Senior Researcher August 17, 2001 1 FILM INDUSTRY EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Movies are a powerful force in Philippine society. Movies, more than just a source of entertainment, reflect a nation’s personality. On the silver screen takes shape all the hopes, dreams and fantasies of the common man: legends, love, the stuff of myths and make believe. Its heroes become larger than life, often attaining the stature of demigods. They are looked upon as role models, serving as resources of inspiration. But most important, the movie industry has become a vital part of the national economy. The paper aims to define the industry and its structure, examine the laws that hinder or facilitate its growth as well as the existing associations and what they have done; look into the market potential of the film industry and its foreign market demand; examine supply capability; identify opportunities and threats confronting the industry; prepare an action plan to enhance competitiveness; and recommend a performance monitoring scheme. The film industry shows that its gross value added is growing faster than the gross domestic product and gross national product. In other words, the industry has a lot of potential to improve further through the years. Extent of growth of firms is primarily Metro-Manila based with Southern Tagalog as a far second. There is more investment in labor or manpower than capital expenditures based on the 1994 Census of Establishments. Motion picture also called film or movie is a series of still photographs on film, projected in rapid succession onto a screen by means of light. -

This number makes the United States the home to the largest number of Filipinos abroad, with California having the highest concentration of Filipino immigrants with 44%. The San Francisco Bay Area, where I was born and raised and where I have lived my whole twenty- eight years, as of this writing, is itself the second largest metropolitan area of Filipino immigrants with a number of 163,000.1 The number of those with Filipino lineage and ethnic mixture is far greater and is still growing, with 1,529,086 a part of California’s 38,332,521 total population from 2000-2015.2 Despite the gravity of these numbers the definition of Filipino American identity remains a vague concept in itself. -

January 13: The United States becomes the world's first nation to introduce TV. WRGB, the first TV station of CBS, becomes the world's first television station. 1946 June 13: American soldier James Lindenberg, pioneer of Philippine TV, establishes the Bolinao Electronics Corporation (BEC), naming after the town of Bolinao in the northern Philippine province of Pangasinan--the hometown of Lindenberg's wife. Establishing itself as a radio manufacturing company, BEC involves in selling radio sets and local assembly of radio transmission equipment and manufacture of RCA equipment (transmitters, radio spare parts) for export abroad. -

Welcome to this fifth and last of the series of “Marcos Pa Rin!” Just to give you a background on this series, we started this last year because of the issue on the Virata School of Business. In reaction to that, we decided to reexplore who Prime Minister [Cesar E.A.] Virata is and the different angles of martial law. The younger generation is not too familiar with that as [they have] not lived through the period and so we decided to hold this series. This is the fifth of the series, and we are going to talk about the different aspects of Ferdinand and Imelda [Marcos] and their impact on the martial law babies and the present generation. The previous parts of this series dealt with the Virata School of Business issue, the government, the legal frameworks, and other aspects of the martial law years and their impact today. The second one, we [focused] on [Ferdinand] “Bongbong” [Romualdez Marcos Jr.] and his potential for the next election and other political realities that we have.
