181 6 - 1991 WITH COMPLIMENTS OF FOREWORD e>

At my age I still countamong my blessings that I was privileged to be apupil in the Free School. I am sure this is how all old'Frees'feel.

The School, established 175 years ago, is still going strong and, one hopes, it will dtill be around in another 175 vears.

A good number of old 'Frees' have settled in Singapore and I have met some of them in the past four decades. I notice most of them have done well in whatever they were or are doing.

I am sure this is the hallmark of old'Frees'and I wish all old'Frees'in Singapore every success in whatever they are doing.

Today is a very special day of our Alma Mater- the 175th Anniversary of the Free School.

Those of us who spent the most formative years of our life at Penang Free still look on those years with nostalgia.

We owe much to our founder, the Rev. R. S. Hutchings and to his vision and determination in providing Penang with its oldest and first English School in this region. Through the years, Penang Free School has maintained its great tradition of having dedicated principals and teachers who have done much to nurture the hopes and aspirations of all. We, the old Frees are the beneficiaries of this.

It is no wonder that, today, Penang Free School alumni are to be found in every area of public and private enterprise.

I am proud to call myself an "Old Free". I hope that in the years ahead Penang Free School and all Frees, old and young, will continue to play an equally significant role in contributing to the well being of society and country.

I thank every member of my committee for their support and valuable assistance.

The Govemor promised, on behalf of the East India Company, a donation of $1,500.00, a monthly subscription of $200.00 and a piece of ground known as the Church Square, as a site for the erection of the school buildinss.

THE OLD PREMISES

In August 1817, the enrolment was 49. In 1830, there were 90 and in 1840, 80. During the next 5 years, the enrolment rose to 173. This great increase was due to the sudden awakening on the part of the populace to the value of an English Education. By 1860there were296 boys; 1870,214;1880, 512;andin 1890, 789. On reaching this number, the school had to turn away a number of applications each year. THE OLD BUILDING The first Headmaster of the School was Mr. J. The first attempt to introduce Science to the School curriculum was made in 1923. Unfortunately it failed. ln 1932, after the completion of the Science Block, a special Science class was started in 1936 for the London and Queen's Scholarship Matriculation candidates who had no opportunity to study the subject in lower standards. In addition, a preparatory class for students who had intentions of taking up medical studies in higher institutions of leaming was started.

The School has, since its inception, taken a liberal view of the function of education and has been a place not only for the acquisition of academic knowledge but also for character building. Thus, the 1930s saw an increase of extra-curricular . activities like Volleyball, Basketball, THEOLDHALL Gymnastics, and Rugby together with Swimming.
