Neste período, segundo historiadores, o número de mortos chegou a 30 mil. Vista pelos olhos dos vencedores como uma simplória revolta de camadas menos favorecidas do extrato social, ao longo do tempo a Cabanagem teve sua memória recuperada por intelectuais e estudiosos da História do Pará, até alcançar o status de Revolução Popular. Este trabalho tem como base teórica estudos sobre textos históricos e de teoria literária, com ênfase à inter-relação entre a memória histórica, o imaginário amazônico e o papel do poeta nas questões sociais de seu tempo, mais especificamente, na poética de José Ildone e o entrecruzamento deste poeta com o olhar do contista João Marques de Carvalho, para mostrar visões diferenciadas sobre a Cabanagem, através de textos ficcionais de escritores de expressão amazônica. A principal proposta da pesquisa é mostrar até que ponto uma produção literária local se projeta em um contexto mais global e o quanto estes textos podem contribuir para analisar e compreender um fenômeno histórico, social e político como foi a revolta cabana, em um período de dissidências, motins, protestos militares e revoluções que eclodiram no Brasil nos nove anos de desorganização política e social do Período Regencial (1831/1840). Palavras chave : Literatura - memória – história – teoria literária – imaginário – poesia. 10 ABSTRACT The Cabanagem, a popular revolution with deep politic, historical and social implications in Para, has unfolded in fights starred by the rebels and the soldiers of the Empire, from 1835 to 1840. In this period, according to historicians, the number of deceases almost reaches 30.000. Perceived by the winners as just a simple rebellion from the castaways of the society, The Cabanagem, as the time passed, had its memory recovered by the sages and researchers of our History, until achieve the status it has as a Popular revolution. This Research has, as theoric basis, studies about historic texts and literary theory, with focus on the inter-relations between the historic memory, the amazonic imaginary and the role of the poet in the social happenings of his time, specifically in the poem’s style of José Ildone and his crossing with the point of view of the short-story writer João Marques de Carvalho, to show the different visions of the Cabanagem, through de fictional texts of amazonic expression’s writers. The main propose of the research is to show how much those poetry and short stories, showing visions about the Cabanagem, through fictional texts analyzed by regional writers. The main propose of the research is to show how much a local literay production is projected in a global context, and how much those texts can contribute to analyze and comprehend this historical , social and politic phenomenon that was the Cabanagem revolt., in a period of dissidence , mutiny, military protests and revolutions that developed in Brazil during the nine years of political and social disorganization of the Regency Period (1831/ 1840) KEY WORDS: Literature- Memory- History- Literary Theory- Imaginary- Poetry 11 INTRODUÇÃO: VERBO DE FOGO Cada época deram por morta a poesia, mas ela se vem demonstrando vitalícia, ressuscita com grande intensidade, parece ser eterna. A poesia acompanhou os agonizantes e estancou as dores, conduziu as vitórias, acompanhou os solitários, foi ardente como fogo, ligeira e fresca como a neve, teve mãos, dedos e punhos, teve brotos como a primavera: fincou raízes no coração dos homens. (PABLO NERUDA, trecho do discurso no Prêmio Nobel de Literatura, 1971) Já não é uma preocupação recente nas áreas do ensino fundamental, médio e superior, o estudo de temas que se relacionam com a Literatura Amazônica, especificamente a Literatura Paraense. Talvez resultado de uma tomada de consciência advinda da busca da decifração da identidade amazônica, essa área de estudos ainda é minoritária e, em geral, fica entre os muros das Escolas ou Universidades que se preocupam com o tema. O presente estudo ambiciona somar duas propostas inseridas neste contexto: a de valorizar ainda mais a produção cultural, a literária em especial, realizada no Pará, sem nenhum cunho de bairrismo ou visão etnocêntrica, e ao mesmo tempo revisar no campo da criação artística, no caso a Poesia – que nos interessa colocar sob foco da análise literária – uma revolução popular, social como foi a Cabanagem com suas implicações históricas. A leitura proposta de um momento da história do Pará, como essa revolução popular, está inserida em três amplos enfoques que serão abordados, na leitura do Romanceiro da Cabanagem , do poeta José Ildone: a memória histórica e coletiva do fato e como esta é reinventada nos poemas; o imaginário amazônico e a cultura do ribeirinho, o caboclo cabano, o mestiço retratado em seu habitat , costumes, lendas, mitos, religiosidade, ligando o homem aos elementos água/terra/floresta e ao seu cotidiano em lugarejos distantes; e a contextualização social do humano ao histórico, fundindo na visão do poeta, como uma 12 rememoração de questões, valores e problemáticas que inserem a palavra poética em um vínculo profundo entre escritor/obra/leitor. A esses três enfoques, antecedem à apreciação do discurso poético, o entrecruzamento de olhares em, pelo menos, dois ângulos distintos: uma mesma temática de fundo histórico revisitada por um poeta e por um contista, considerando os efeitos que os fatos de uma história recente produzem no leitor e o diálogo entre história/literatura e literatura/sociedade. A relação da história com a literatura vem desde o final da década de 70, quando a escola dos Annales, deu ao mundo a ampla visão da Nova História: o texto literário pôde ser objeto de estudo da história, justamente porque “os discursos literário e histórico têm vozes de enunciação múltiplas” , mas que em uma medida podem expressar “o poder mágico da palavra de enunciar o real e tornar aceitável,” (PESAVENTO, 1998: p.23) esse ato enunciatório, como a fala do social, da memória coletiva e, em última análise, a busca da identidade. O poeta assim se vê, herdeiro de uma geração que assistiu “à desagregação ao sistema colonial,” mas que deseja encontrar-se em sua palavra, em seu discurso, com o ideal de retratar e de recriar um sentimento nativista, patriótico, em um grau “de pertencimento” à uma comunidade à qual está umbilicalmente unido na heróica “natureza,

Abstract: Alagoas opens its historical narrative about itself from the silence on events clashing with the vision of "harmonious society" and “without economic or social contradictions" that wants to sign for posterity. I intend to consider two regional factors that influenced the decision of both the Cayenne Government and the metropolitan government to build military forts in the region. Such factors are the Cabanagem and the attempts of black Bonis to settle in Lower Oiapoque. I will go on to show that the French withdrawal from Amapá Lake in 1840, but not from the post on the right bank of the Oiapoque River, was due not only to international and diplomatic factors but also had regional causes. Notwithstanding the French government's interests in expanding the territory of its South American colony, I want to draw attention to the threats - real or fictitious - of Cabanos, from Brazil, and black Bonis, from Dutch Guiana. 1 This article forms part of a research project funded by Gerda Henkel Foundation (Germany) about the region of the French-Brazilian Boarding between 1840-1900.     In the Shadow of Independence: Portugal, Brazil, and Their Mutual Influence after the End of Empire (late 1820s-early 1840s)1 Gabriel Paquette2 Historians have long recognized how the formal achievement of independence meant neither that the legacies of colonialism had been extirpated nor that the newly won sovereignty was unencumbered. Legacies of colonialism in Latin America after independence were numerous and included older forms of indigenous tribute and taxation, labor regimes such as slavery, legal codes, and the position of the post-colonial polity in the world economy, the latter of which also circumscribed sovereignty as scholars working in the Dependency Theory, Informal Empire, and World Systems traditions have demonstrated. Recently, historians have begun to recognize that many non-economic connections and relationships between Europe and Latin America survived the disintegration of the Ibero-Atlantic empires and that many new ones, both overtly coercive and less so, were formed (e.g., the circulation of political ideas; European immigration schemes) (Brown and Paquette 2013). Three phenomena—the “persistence of mutual influence,” the repair or re- thickening of frayed threads, and the spinning of new, unprecedented transatlantic webs— may be understood as combining to make plausible the notion of “Late Atlantic History” (Rothschild 2011); that is, an Atlantic History after the demise of formal empire. Also, a visitor -like me- to the Institute of Latin American Studies at Columbia University would easily notice a picture of car (probably in the city of Santarem, Para) with a banner saying "Fora Greenpeace. Amaz6nia e dos Brasileiros". Recently, the sale of public lands in the Amazon region has aroused public controversy. Many saw in this sale an ecological threat and even a challenge to the national sovereignty since some of the would-be buyers were foreigners. The proposal of extending upward the surface limit to the sales of public lands, from 500 to 1,500 hectares worried environmentalist activists who cared about the advance of deforestation, and it caused the split of the governmental coalition around this issue between the former Minister of Environment Marina Silva and the present holder of the office, Carlos Minc!. This is not the first time that the Amazon region is at the root of a controversy regarding environmental or national sovereignty issues. En 1996, the Conselho Superior de Orientayao Politica y Social of the FIESP (the main association of industrialists in Sao Paulo) published an essay by Lieutenant Colonel of the Army, Senator and former Minister Jarbas Gonyalves Passarinho with the title A lntemacionalizarylio da Amazonia.

The institutional reforms implemented in the nineties helped to stabilize the economy and create a friendlier environment for attracting investments and fostering growth. Despite of uncertainties that still loom in the horizon, regarding the prospects for reconciling sustainable development and macroeconomic stability, the overall balance of the results achieved in the past decade is positive. In the process of moving from a closed, state controlled economy to an open privately run one, the federal regime affected and was affected. Indeed, the greater the degree of sub national governments interests in proposed reforms, the more difficult was to put them into place. In some cases, they had to be lured into accepting changes that reduced state and local autonomy. Even in cases where federal interests were not so evident, the power of state and local governments in the National Parliament give room for bargaining over compensation for less autonomy or financial losses. Of the reforms that stood high in the agenda for modernizing the Brazilian economy during the nineties, three deserve special attention: Privatization, Public Employment & Social Security and Taxation. Given the central role of healthy public finances in the strategy for macroeconomic stability, these reforms were object of an intense debate and much disagreement.

(Justiniano José da Rocha, «Ação, reação, transação») With those words, Justiniano José da Rocha, an imminent journalist and politician, recorded in his famous pamphlet, «Ação, reação, transação», originally published in 1855, the idea that the defeat of the Praieira Rebellion (in the province of Pernambuco) meant, for the Brazilian Empire, the end of the uprisings and political turbulences that rattled the country in the past decades1. 1 A recent analysis of the above mentioned pamphlet is provided by Tâmis Parron, in which he takes into account not only Rocha’s inspirations, but also the social-political context and contemporary political parties disputes. Since the mid-eighteenth century, the Portuguese Crown’s failure to promote the mass influx of enslaved Africans resulted in legislation that successively institutionalized and regularized coerced labor, limiting the mobility of individuals in the lower classes and obligating them to work against their will. Initially, this was restricted to Indians, but the measures were eventually applied to the entire free population of color. This article discusses the conditions under which these laws emerged and their impact on the living conditions of the population subject to them, placing the nineteenth-century Amazonian experience within wider historiographical debates about free and unfree labor. Just as in other colonial societies, the authorities in the Amazon were constantly concerned with finding viable methods of economic exploitation, combined with maximum possible control over those they saw as their labor source.1 The abundance of land and confidence in the soil’s fertility sustained the idea that, at some point, the plantation system based on African slave labor, which had long dominated several coastal regions of Brazil, would also succeed in this region. As long as this was not the case, however, the focus remained on indigenous labor and the extraction of natural resources from the forests and rivers.

Langer, PhD. ABSTRACT Japan’s occupation of Southeast Asia in early 1942 cut off more than 90 percent of the global rubber supply to the World War II Allies. Without an adequate supply of this strategic material to meet military-industrial requirements, it was impossible to win the war. The Roosevelt Administration concluded that the success of the Allied war effort could depend on increasing the productivity of rubber tappers who extracted latex from rubber trees dispersed throughout Amazonian rainforests. In response to Roosevelt’s appeal, Brazil’s President, Getúlio Vargas, organized a “Battle for Rubber” to increase rubber production in the Amazon. The authoritarian Brazilian government recruited around 30,000 “rubber soldiers,” mainly from the arid Northeast, and sent them to work on Amazonian rubber estates. This study explores the dynamics of global, national, and regional actors as they converged and interacted with Amazonian society in the Battle for Rubber. Migrant rubber tappers, Amazonian rubber elites, indigenous groups, North American technical advisers, Brazilian government agencies, and the Roosevelt Administration were linked in a wartime enterprise to increase rubber production.
