WELCOMING THE LEGENDARY TO THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

1 WHEREAS, Long considered a true living legend in entertainment, not only in America,

2 but throughout the world, Carol Burnett has given each and every one of us here, moments of

3 pause, moments of joy and hours of laughter; and

4 WHEREAS, Spending most of her childhood in a less than glamorous section of

5 Hollywood, Miss Burnett attended UCLA before heading to . Early on, with jobs

6 tough to find, the innovative Carol Burnett staged her own musical review, featuring her out-of-

7 work roommates and unemployed writers and composers. Soon, offers for summer stock and 13

8 weeks' work on Paul Winchell's TV show followed. Shortly after, she was spotted by talent

9 bookers from both "The Jack Paar Show" and "The Show". The now legendary

10 rendition of "I Made A Fool of Myself Over John Foster Dulles" was the beginning of America's

11 relationship with Carol Burnett. Audiences were in love with the laughter, in love with Carol

12 Burnett; and

13 WHEREAS, As the years passed, Carol Burnett juggled both and .

14 In 1967, Carol returned to to begin what would deservedly become the longest-

15 running musical comedy in television history, America's favorite, "The Carol

16 Burnett Show"; and

17 WHEREAS, Throughout her career and even during "", Miss

18 Burnett found the time to headline in Las Vegas, and star in numerous , film and television

19 productions with the likes of , , , Walter Matthau, Jack 1 Lemmon, , Michael Caine, Christopher Reeve, Elizabeth Taylor, Charlton Heston,

2 Cliff Robertson, and so many more people that have shaped the entertainment industry in our

3 country; and

4 WHEREAS, Her loving memoir, One More Time, began as a letter to her daughters, a

5 record of Carol's life and family history. This work was critically acclaimed, and reached the

6 non-fiction best sellers list in 1986; and

7 WHEREAS, Carol Burnett's accomplishments have been recognized with numerous

8 awards, including 6 , 5 Golden Globes, the Peabody Award, the Ace Award, more

9 People's Choice Awards than any other woman in history, a Best Actor Tony Award, and a

10 Christopher Award to name a few. In recognition of the vast body of television accomplishments

11 that Miss Burnett was responsible for, The National Association of Broadcasters inducted her into

12 their prestigious Hall of Fame; and

13 WHEREAS, Carol Burnett's social and charitable endeavors are endless, including

14 scholarships to UCLA, the University of Hawaii, Emerson College and The College of Santa Fe.

15 She serves on the board of trustees at UCLA where she has established "The Carol Burnett

16 Musical Theater Competition"; and

17 WHEREAS, Carol Burnett's last special, "The Carol Burnett Show: Show Stoppers" with

18 , and , aired last November, attracted nearly 30

19 million viewers, giving CBS its most watched non-sports program in that time period since 1991;

20 and

21 WHEREAS, Carol Burnett is an especially remarkable human being whose warmth and

22 talent have lifted spirits, lightened loads, and just made life a little easier, and for this, we thank

23 her; now, therefore be it

24 RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

25 hereby welcomes the unforgettable Carol Burnett to the Rhode Island State Senate and extends

26 our heartfelt best wishes for her good health, continued success and much happiness; and be it

27 further

28 RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to

29 transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Miss Carol Burnett.
