Advisers serve alongside existing school counselors as trained resources, mentors, and champions for higher education. As a result, the program will increase the number of students who successfully make the transition from high school to a postsecondary educational program of study that aligns with their career goals. The Model The program embeds well-trained, dedicated, near-peer college advisers into high schools that serve significant numbers of low-income and first generation college-going students. Advisers are recent graduates of twelve partner institutions. Once hired, the advisers complete a four-week intensive summer training before the school year begins. Advisers help students and families: Navigate the process of college and career exploration Prepare for college admissions examinations Apply to colleges that are a good match/fit Help prepare college applications and fee waivers Organize college campus visits Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Secure financial aid and assist with scholarship applications Matriculate to college College advisers are meant to supplement the great work of high school counselors. They will also support school administrators and staff to foster a college- going culture in the building . Advisers are encouraged to provide services in tandem with existing college access efforts as well as Local College Access Networks. Partner Institutions Alma College, Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Madonna College, Oakland University, Saginaw Valley State University, University of Michigan-Dearborn, University of Michigan-Flint, Wayne State University, and Western Michigan University Funding AdviseMI is an AmeriCorps program made possible through a blended funding model with gracious support from: State of Michigan, The Kresge Foundation, Corporation for National and Community Service, host communities, and partner institutions. Program Contact Information For additional information, contact Bristol Day or Jacqueline Ruhland, co-directors of AdviseMI, at 517-316-1713 or [email protected] and [email protected]. .

See where your school ranks! mackinac.org/CAP2016 THE MICHIGAN CONTEXT AND PERFORMANCE REPORT CARD HIGH SCHOOLS 2016 By Ben DeGrow and Ronald Klingler The Mackinac Center for Public Policy is a nonpartisan research and educational institute dedicated to improving the quality of life for all Michigan residents by promoting sound solutions to state and local policy questions. The Mackinac Center assists policymakers, scholars, businesspeople, the media and the public by providing objective analysis of Michigan issues. The goal of all Center reports, commentaries and educational programs is to equip Michigan residents and other decision makers to better evaluate policy options. The Mackinac Center for Public Policy is broadening the debate on issues that have for many years been dominated by the belief that government intervention should be the standard solution. Center publications and programs, in contrast, offer an integrated and comprehensive approach that considers: All Institutions. The Center examines the important role of voluntary associations, communities, businesses and families, as well as government. All People. Mackinac Center research recognizes the diversity of Michigan residents and treats them as individuals with unique backgrounds, circumstances and goals. All Disciplines.
