Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment & Development Kosi-Katarmal, Almora 263 643, Uttarakhand , INDIA Prof Surendra Pratap Singh, FNA, FNASc Chair of Excellence FRI (Deemed) University, Dehradun E-Mail: [email protected] Prof Surendra Pr atap Singh, a post-graduate in Botany from RBS College Agra , did his PhD from Gorakhpur University. With a beginning of research on limnology, a s Professor and Head of Botany Department , Kumaun University , Nainital, he played a leading role in establishing a strong ecological research group with a strong group of young researchers. This centre contributed significantly towards understanding structure and functioning of the Himalayan Forests and Grassland Ecosystems. Among others, his scholarly publications during late eighties to mid nineties on Forests of Himalaya have given n ew insight to science and received wide attention of national and international scientific fraternity. In recent years, Dr Singh has been engaged with climate change impact issues and pioneered the concept of ecosystem services in India. His contributions as Vice chancellor of HNB Garhwal University Srinagar, and Advisor Planning Commission, U ttarakhand Government have remained exemplary. Prof Singh is the Fellow of National Academy (FNA) and several other academies. He is the recipient of Birbal Sahani a ward for life time contribution , Uttarakhand Ratna, and Peace Prize from Italy. He has also been the Courtesy Professor, Oregon State University , Corvallis, USA. As an advisor to ‘Planning Commission Uttarakhand State’, Dr Singh developed articles on high er education and school education. He serves as member / chairman of research advisory committees of various institutions , including Chairman of Scientific Advisory Committee of GBPIHED . -
