The Pitmen, however, are unbeaten in three continental away fixtures this term. Match background Bayern • Bayern's ten previous games against Ukrainian clubs were all against FC Dynamo Kyiv, who beat the Munich team 3-0 (2-0h) over two legs to lift the 1975 UEFA Super Cup. • That tie aside, Bayern won all four home fixtures against Dynamo Kyiv. Overall their record is W5 D2 L4. • The 2012/13 European champions eliminated Arsenal FC at this stage last year for the second successive season en route to their third semi-final in a row. Bayern triumphed 2-0 in London with Thomas Müller on the scoresheet; it finished 1-1 in Germany, Bastian Schweinsteiger breaking the deadlock. • Top of Group E by a seven-point margin, Josep Guardiola's charges won all three home matches without conceding a goal, overcoming Manchester City FC 1-0, AS Roma 2-0 and PFC CSKA Moskva 3-0. • Bayern have won all but two of the 19 UEFA ties in which they drew the first leg away from home, the exceptions being against Liverpool FC in the 1980/81 European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-finals (0-0 away, 1-1 home) and AC Milan in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals (2-2 away, 0-2 home). • Bayern's shoot-out record in UEFA competitions is W5 L1: 5-4 v Chelsea FC, 2013 UEFA Super Cup 3-4 v Chelsea FC, 2011/12 UEFA Champions League final 3-1 v Real Madrid CF, 2011/12 UEFA Champions League semi-final 5-4 v Valencia CF, 2000/01 UEFA Champions League final 9-8 v PAOK FC, 1983/84 UEFA Cup second round 4-3 v Åtvidabergs FF, 1973/74 European Cup first round Shakhtar • Shakhtar lost in Germany at this same juncture in 2012/13, going down 3-0 at Borussia Dortmund. At home they had drawn 2-2, leading twice through Darijo Srna and Douglas Costa with Robert Lewandowski scoring Dortmund's first equaliser. • In last term's group stage, the Ukrainian champions crashed 4-0 at Bayer 04 Leverkusen and drew 0-0 at home. • Shakhtar's most recent victory on German soil came at VfB Stuttgart in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup group stage, Fernandinho and Ciprian Marica earning a 2-0 win in which Srna also featured. The Ukrainian side's record in Germany reads W2 D1 L4. • Shakhtar's most memorable meeting with Bundesliga opposition was their 2-1 extra-time defeat of SV Werder Bremen in the 2009 UEFA Cup final in Istanbul. Luiz Adriano scored the opener for a Shakhtar team also containing Andriy Pyatov, Srna, Olexandr Kucher and Ilsinho. • This is Shakhtar's third appearance in the round of 16 – all in the last five campaigns. Aside from the 2013 Dortmund reverse, in 2010/11 they ousted Roma 6-2 on aggregate. • This season they were second in Group H, five points behind FC Porto. On their travels they drew 0-0 at Athletic Club, won 7-0 at FC BATE Borisov and drew 1-1 in Porto. • The group phase proved a personal triumph for Luiz Adriano who equalled Cristiano Ronaldo's record – set in 2013/14 – of nine goals. • Shakhtar have drawn the home first leg in six previous UEFA competition ties and have proceeded to lose three of those, most recently against Borussia Dortmund in the 2012/13 round of 16 (2-2 home, 0-3 away). Their sole goalless home first leg, against RC Celta de Vigo in the 2000/01 UEFA Cup third round, preceded a 1-0 away defeat. • Shakhtar lost their only UEFA penalty shoot-out 4-1 at Club Brugge KV in the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.

However, they at least know that they will have some chance of qualifying on Matchday 5 – however slender – regardless of the result of the game against their Norwegian visitors. • Rosenborg have no such luxury, having matched their worst ever home defeat in European competition in losing 4-0 to Valencia CF last Thursday. This is their final Group G game, and anything other than a win would spell the end of their continental campaign for the season. • This will be København and Rosenborg's first meeting in European club competition.

Journal of Sports Analytics 5 (2019) 23–34 23 DOI 10.3233/JSA-170235 IOS Press Modelling the financial contribution of soccer players to their clubs Olav Drivenes Sæbøa and Lars Magnus Hvattumb,∗ aDepartment of Industrial Economics and Technology Management, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway bFaculty of Logistics, Molde University College, Norway Abstract. This paper presents a framework for evaluating the financial consequences of player transfers as seen from a club’s perspective. To this end, an objective player rating model is designed based on players’ contribution towards creating a positive goals differential for their team. A regression model is then applied to predict match outcomes as a function of the players involved in a match. Finally, Monte Carlo simulation is used to predict the final league standings and the financial gains obtained as a function of sporting success. The framework is illustrated on player transfers from the 2014-2015 English Premier League season. Keywords: association, football, rating, simulation, regression 1.
