Read to the end for an answer. What does habitat connectivity look like to a plant with its roots rooted to a spot? In a series of projects on the conservation of the Matted Flax-lily (Dianella amoena), the Merri Creek landscape has been looked at from a plant’s-eye view. Along the way, the projects uncovered a whole range of stories that have really captured the imagination of the local community. Plants might be rooted in the soil, but they need their seeds to disperse around the landscape to areas suitable for colonisation – or re-colonisation. And to produce that seed, most plants need pollen from another plant probably not too closely related. Without that outcrossing, plants will not produce viable seed. So we need to consider habitat connectivity from the point of view of a “pollen pathway”. Different plants have different seed dispersal and pollination syndromes and these are affected to different degrees by fragmentation. Ary Hoffman (see Talk 2) identified how we need to have genetic diversity in plants to foster adaptation – what he called “adaptive capacity”. So we need to think about pollen when we think about habitat connectivity. For wind pollinated she-oaks and grasses, even quite large gaps can be spanned by pollen. -

About the Book the Format Acknowledgments
About the Book For more than ten years I have been working on a book on bryophyte ecology and was joined by Heinjo During, who has been very helpful in critiquing multiple versions of the chapters. But as the book progressed, the field of bryophyte ecology progressed faster. No chapter ever seemed to stay finished, hence the decision to publish online. Furthermore, rather than being a textbook, it is evolving into an encyclopedia that would be at least three volumes. Having reached the age when I could retire whenever I wanted to, I no longer needed be so concerned with the publish or perish paradigm. In keeping with the sharing nature of bryologists, and the need to educate the non-bryologists about the nature and role of bryophytes in the ecosystem, it seemed my personal goals could best be accomplished by publishing online. This has several advantages for me. I can choose the format I want, I can include lots of color images, and I can post chapters or parts of chapters as I complete them and update later if I find it important. Throughout the book I have posed questions. I have even attempt to offer hypotheses for many of these. It is my hope that these questions and hypotheses will inspire students of all ages to attempt to answer these. Some are simple and could even be done by elementary school children. Others are suitable for undergraduate projects. And some will take lifelong work or a large team of researchers around the world. Have fun with them! The Format The decision to publish Bryophyte Ecology as an ebook occurred after I had a publisher, and I am sure I have not thought of all the complexities of publishing as I complete things, rather than in the order of the planned organization. -

Bininda-Emondsa aInstitut fu¨r Spezielle Zoologie und Evolutionsbiologie, FSU Jena, Germany bMuseo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, Madrid, Spain Received 14 October 2005; accepted 17 May 2006 Abstract A supertree for Adephaga was reconstructed based on 43 independent source trees – including cladograms based on Hennigian and numerical cladistic analyses of morphological and molecular data – and on a backbone taxonomy. To overcome problems associated with both the size of the group and the comparative paucity of available information, our analysis was made at the genus level (requiring synonymizing taxa at different levels across the trees) and used Safe Taxonomic Reduction to remove especially poorly known species. The final supertree contained 401 genera, making it the most comprehensive phylogenetic estimate yet published for the group. Interrelationships among the families are well resolved. Gyrinidae constitute the basal sister group, Haliplidae appear as the sister taxon of Geadephaga+ Dytiscoidea, Noteridae are the sister group of the remaining Dytiscoidea, Amphizoidae and Aspidytidae are sister groups, and Hygrobiidae forms a clade with Dytiscidae. Resolution within the species-rich Dytiscidae is generally high, but some relations remain unclear. Trachypachidae are the sister group of Carabidae (including Rhysodidae), in contrast to a proposed sister-group relationship between Trachypachidae and Dytiscoidea. Carabidae are only monophyletic with the inclusion of a non-monophyletic Rhysodidae, but resolution within this megadiverse group is generally low. Non-monophyly of Rhysodidae is extremely unlikely from a morphological point of view, and this group remains the greatest enigma in adephagan systematics. -

(Read June 28th, 1910.) h has long been felt by those who are interested in the BDELLOID HOTIFERA that a revision of the classification of this group would considerably facilitate further investigation into a comparatively little-known corner of the animal kingdom. During the last eighteen years the number of known species has more than doubled, the great majority of the new forms being additions to the two genera Philoclina and Cctlliclina, which have conse quently become overcro:wded, unwieldy, and unsatisfactory. Besides this, a more intimate acquaintance with the diversities of structure and of habit of a gr'eatly extended array of species has proved that not only are the old generic definitions in f.dequate, but that they are also unreliable, and should no longer be accepted. The object of this paper is to place the classification of the BDELLOIDA on a more satisfactory basis, and it is hoped that the arrangement now put forward will provide a sound foundation, or, at the least, a new starting-point for future work, and that the lines on which it is framed will prove to be reliable and true to the natural relationships of the species with which it deals. Fl'Om the point of view of classification the BDELLOID ROTIFERA have already experienced a somewhat complicated career. Their history as a recognised group of allied species seems to have begun in 1830, when Ehrenberg published his first Classified Li"t of Micro-organisms (2), wherein he introduced the family Zygot1"ocha, comprising all Rotifera with a ciliary wreath of two similar parts. -

Seis de ellas son primeras citas para las islas Canarias. La mayoría de las especies citadas infectan Carabidae (Coleoptera). Muchas de las especies de hospedantes (23) son endémicas, siendo sólo nueve las de hospedantes que también se encuentran fuera de la región Macaronésica. Los Carabidae, como familia más diversa de hospedantes, incluyen 21 especies endémicas y 6 de amplia distribución. Las pautas de distribución de Laboulbeniales dependen de dos factores ecológicos (humedad y biodiversidad de los hospedantes) que varían mucho entre las distintas islas. Palabras clave: Laboulbeniales, Carabidae, Staphylinidae, Anthicidae, Blattaria, Ephydridae, islas Canarias. ABSTRACT: The list includes 23 species of Laboulbeniales (Ascomycota) in 8 genera. Six species are new for the Canary Islands. The majority of recorded species infests Carabidae (Coleoptera). Most host species (23) are endemic, only nine hosts also occur outside the Macaronesian region. There are 21 endemic and 6 widespread host species in the Carabidae as most diverse host family. The distribution pattern of Laboulbeniales corresponds with two ecological factors (moisture and host biodiversity respectively) which vary strongly between the different islands. -

INTRODUCCIÓN Marc Lacroix ha descrito recientemente una nueva especie canaria de Pachydema: Pachydema keithi Lacroix, 2000, nominada en honor de su colega Denis Keith, cuyo holotypus está conservado en el Museo de París (Museum national d’Histoire naturelle). El nuevo taxon procede del Pozo de las Nieves, en la isla de Gran Canaria. Sin embargo, en realidad Lacroix ha redescrito, paso por paso, a Pachydema bipartita ameliae López-Colón, 1986, una subespecie de Pachydema bipartita (Brullé, 1838) [cuyo holotypus, que procede de Valleseco, Gran Canaria, está conservado en el Departamento de Biología Animal de la Universidad de La Laguna (Tenerife)] que Galante & Stebnicka (1992) pasaron a sinonimia de esta última (ver pág. -
