Mann Performing Arts Center Wardrobe Supervisor Caitlin Durrance The Blagojevic Sponsored -Sazonov Group In Part By: at A Message From The ARTISTIC DIRECTOR For our highly anticipated Barbara B. Mann debut, we present a fresh new look at this most popular Puccini opera. The idea came when I was searching for a poster image. Mindful that Puccini composed the work at the height of the Impressionist movement, I started looking at Paris street scenes of that period and came across Van Gogh’s Terrace Cafe at Night. The painting sparked a vision of the characters in the opera living upstairs from that cafe and coming down to hang out there, just like Van Gogh and the Paris Impressionists would have. A vibrant young creative team from across the United States have been collaborating since October to bring this original design production of Puccini’s most loved grand opera to Southwest Florida. Stage director, Josh Shaw, describing this new production explains, “La Bohème is a timeless story with themes as relevant today, as they were in the original setting. In the late 1880s Paris was filled with a concentration of larger than life artistic characters -- Van Gogh, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, and others. In our production, we are imagining our bohemian lovers as moving in the same circles as the great Impressionist artists who rebelled against classical subject matter and embraced modernity, creating works that reflected the world in which they lived. -

Kenneth E. Querns Langley Doctor of Philosophy
Reconstructing the Tenor ‘Pharyngeal Voice’: a Historical and Practical Investigation Kenneth E. Querns Langley Submitted in partial fulfilment of Doctor of Philosophy in Music 31 October 2019 Page | ii Abstract One of the defining moments of operatic history occurred in April 1837 when upon returning to Paris from study in Italy, Gilbert Duprez (1806–1896) performed the first ‘do di petto’, or high c′′ ‘from the chest’, in Rossini’s Guillaume Tell. However, according to the great pedagogue Manuel Garcia (jr.) (1805–1906) tenors like Giovanni Battista Rubini (1794–1854) and Garcia’s own father, tenor Manuel Garcia (sr.) (1775–1832), had been singing the ‘do di petto’ for some time. A great deal of research has already been done to quantify this great ‘moment’, but I wanted to see if it is possible to define the vocal qualities of the tenor voices other than Duprez’, and to see if perhaps there is a general misunderstanding of their vocal qualities. That investigation led me to the ‘pharyngeal voice’ concept, what the Italians call falsettone. I then wondered if I could not only discover the techniques which allowed them to have such wide ranges, fioritura, pianissimi, superb legato, and what seemed like a ‘do di petto’, but also to reconstruct what amounts to a ‘lost technique’. To accomplish this, I bring my lifelong training as a bel canto tenor and eighteen years of experience as a classical singing teacher to bear in a partially autoethnographic study in which I analyse the most important vocal treatises from Pier Francesco Tosi’s (c. -

2019/20 SEASON JANUARY - MARCH 2020 2 • Director’s Introduction • 3 We are delighted to welcome the French mezzo-soprano Marianne Crebassa for her Wigmore Hall debut this spring, presenting a programme of her native repertoire alongside two works from the distinguished Turkish pianist, Fazıl Say, who will accompany Crebassa in January. Vijay Iyer continues his contemplations on musicality with two events in January. Ritual Ensemble draws on various musical systems to forge a unity of orchestrated and ecstatic expressions in their music. The following afternoon, Iyer is joined in conversation by Professor Georgina Born for an exchange of ideas traversing the arts, humanities, and social and natural sciences. Our Beethoven celebrations continue with the cycles begun in autumn, including Trio Shaham Erez Wallfisch’s complete piano trios, Jonathan Biss in the complete piano sonatas, and James Ehnes and Andrew Armstrong’s exploration of the composer’s violin sonatas. An evening in March is dedicated to Beethoven’s string trios with Daniel Sepec, Tabea Zimmermann and Jean-Guihen Queyras. The Dover Quartet presents two consecutive concerts in January covering composers from Mozart and Rossini to Hindemith and double bassist Edgar Meyer. Meyer joins the quartet on the Sunday night for a Rossini duet and his own Quintet for strings. In February 2020, Wigmore Hall Learning presents its annual Learning Festival. From Monday 10 to Saturday 22 February, we will explore the concept of Musical Conversations, with a special Bechstein Session event with the Sacconi Quartet to open the festival on 10 February. The celebrated soprano Nelly Miricioiu will be leading what promises to be an insightful masterclass in March, following her lunchtime recital a week before. -

Singer in Concert
José Cura the Singer in Concert Then comes José Cura and the stage explodes. He’s a real professional with remarkably constant contact with the audience. The audience gave thanks with a standing ovation. Súgópéldány, February 2015 José Cura’s early years as a singer followed the normal trajectory of young, talented artists: working to acquire experience, reIining stagecraft and gaining exposure. The hustle required to “make it” in theaters and open air venues often prove over-whelming but Cura thrived under the intensity, the pressure, the public gaze. No matter the size of the crowd, he pressed on, giving his all, willing his all, to reach each member of the audience, to sell himself and his potential. The struggle to succeed strengthened his resolve and honed his instincts as an entertainer, allowing the emerging showman to gain conIidence, to burnish his charisma. Cura careened from opportunity to opportunity, from stage to stage, city to city, developing his unique style of delivery and spreading his charm, inevitably creating the trajectory needed to launch a legendary career. Recitals with reduced piano scores are a starting point in the development of a young vocalist. Cura learned quickly: performances of highlights from Cavalleria rusticana at the Teatro dell’Arca in Milan, La fanciulla del west for the Circle Dordoni in Brescia, Il trovatore at Teatro Rosetum in Milan. Cura also secured his Iirst appearance outside Italy in 1992, in Breisgau, Germany, with an evening of Italian opera favorites. Small roles in operas (Le remendado in Carmen and Il capitano dei ballestrieri in Simon Boccanegra) led to bigger roles (Albert Gregor in Il caso Makropulos, Lt Niki in Sogno di un valzer, Jan in La signorina Julie) and a Iirst recording (Le villi, live from Martina Franca). -
