Selon la théorie de la spéciation écologique, l’isolement reproducteur résulte de la sélection divergente agissant sur des populations écologiquement différentes. Par leurs caractéristiques uniques, les îles océaniques constituent des systèmes idéals pour étudier le rôle des facteurs écologiques dans la diversification des lignées endémiques. Le rôle de l’habitat et des pollinisateurs dans la restriction des flux géniques inter et intraspécifique est examiné chez le faham (Jumellea rossii et J. fragrans), une orchidée endémique des Mascareignes. Pour ce faire, les patrons de différenciation phénotypique (traits floraux morphologiques et chimiques), environnementale (habitat, altitude, climat) et génétique (microsatellites nucléaires) ont été confrontés. A l’échelle intraspécifique, les résultats montrent que les flux de gènes sont principalement limités par les différences environnementales entre habitats sans rôle évident des pollinisateurs. A l’échelle interspécifique, outre les variations d’habitat, le changement de pollinisateur semble expliquer l’absence de flux de gènes. Dans le cadre du continuum de spéciation chez le faham, l’isolement reproducteur évoluerait en premier lieu en réponse à l’adaptation aux différents habitats, puis serait renforcé par l’adaptation à différents pollinisateurs. La révision de la taxinomie du clade et les priorités en terme de conservation sont également discutées. Abstract THE ROLE OF ECOLOGY IN ISLAND SPECIATION Effect of habitat and pollinator shifts on the diversification of faham (Jumellea spp., Orchidaceae) in the Mascarene Islands Mechanisms responsible for the establishment of reproductive isolation are little studied in island adaptive radiations. According to the theory of ecological speciation, reproductive isolation results from the ecologically-based divergent selection. By their unique characteristics, oceanic islands are ideal systems to study the role of ecological factors in the diversification of endemic lineages. This study focuses on the role of habitat and pollinators in restricting inter and intraspecific gene flow between populations of faham (Jumellea spp.), an orchid endemic to Mascarene Islands. To do this, patterns of phenotypic differentiation (floral traits), environmental differentiation (habitat, altitude, climate) and genetic differentiation (nuclear microsatellites) were compared. At the intraspecific level, the results show that gene flow restriction is mainly due to the colonization of different habitat types with no obvious role of pollinators. At the interspecific level, in addition to the role of habitat, pollinator shift seems to explain effective complete reproductive isolation. By placing these results into the continuum of speciation, it appears that reproductive isolation evolve initially in response to adaptation to different habitats and, in a second phase, would be enhanced by pollinator-driven divergent selection. Operationally, this study reviews the taxonomy of faham and proposes to define management units and priorities in terms of conservation. The discovery of a large, well-pollinated population of H. epipactidea in the Eastern Cape allowed us to confirm the presence of this unusual pollen placement on a number of species of shorter- tongued hawkmoths. The long-tongued species Agrius convolvuli is likely to function as a nectar thief as the length of the tongue of this species relative to the nectar spur ensures that the forelegs are unlikely to come into contact with the viscidia. The legitimate hawkmoth pollinators removed a large proportion of pollinaria from the flowers and the majority of flowers had pollen deposited on their stigmas. Despite this, pollen transfer efficiency was relatively low at 8.4%.

    2018 ANNUAL REPORT MOTHS & BUTTERFLIES OF GRIZZLY PEAK PRESERVE: Inventory Results from 2018 Prepared and Submi�ed by: DANA ROSS (Entomologist/Lepidoptera Specialist) Corvallis, Oregon SUMMARY The Grizzly Peak Preserve was sampled for butterflies and moths during May, June and October, 2018. A grand total of 218 species were documented and included 170 moths and 48 butterflies. These are presented as an annotated checklist in the appendix of this report. Butterflies and day-flying moths were sampled during daylight hours with an insect net. Nocturnal moths were collected using battery-powered backlight traps over single night periods at 10 locations during each monthly visit. While many of the documented butterflies and moths are common and widespread species, others - that include the Western Sulphur (Colias occidentalis primordialis) and the noctuid moth Eupsilia fringata - represent more locally endemic and/or rare taxa. One geometrid moth has yet to be identified and may represent an undescribed (“new”) species. Future sampling during March, April, July, August and September will capture many more Lepidoptera that have not been recorded. Once the site is more thoroughly sampled, the combined Grizzly Peak butterfly-moth fauna should total at least 450-500 species. INTRODUCTION The Order Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) is an abundant and diverse insect group that performs essential ecological functions within terrestrial environments. As a group, these insects are major herbivores (caterpillars) and pollinators (adults), and are a critical food source for many species of birds, mammals (including bats) and predacious and parasitoid insects. With hundreds of species of butterflies and moths combined occurring at sites with ample habitat heterogeneity, a Lepidoptera inventory can provide a valuable baseline for biodiversity studies.

These epiphytic medicinal plants are able to produce a range of secondary metabolites, including alkaloids, and a total of 842 phytochemicals have been identified to date. As many as 71 epiphytic medicinal plants were studied for their biological activities, showing promising pharmacological activities, including as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer agents. There are several species that were not investigated for their activities and are worthy of exploration.

The UK Scientific Authority and the United Nations Environment Programme – World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) were to prepare a checklist for Orchidaceae, presenting Appendix I and Appendix II species separately. a) This was to be undertaken by generating an output for Orchidaceae from the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families. The output includes accepted names, synonyms and country-level distribution information. b) The dataset for Orchidaceae was provided by The World Checklist of Selected Plant Families. The World Checklist of Selected Plant Families has become an international collaborative programme with more than 150 contributors from 22 countries. The main goal of the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families is to provide high quality peer reviewed baseline data on all accepted taxa included in each family. c) To make the review of proposed changes manageable, a comparison was undertaken between the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families output and the current CITES nomenclature standard references for Orchidaceae. 3. The Appendix I Orchid Checklist was adopted at the 18th CITES Conference of the Parties (Switzerland, 2019). This checklist and the proposed checklist were compiled using the same methodology.
