Due to marked differences in adult and larval morphology, as well as mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, two species of Plagusia,viz.,P. chabrus (Linnaeus, 1758), and P. dentipes De Haan, 1835, are considered sister taxa but distinct from other members of the genus. They are transferred to a new genus, Guinusia. A molecular phylogeny suggests that Guinusia is not closer related to Plagusia than to the plagusiid genera Euchirograpsus H. Milne Edwards, 1853, and Miersiograpsus Türkay, 1978. Furthermore, with new evidence from mitochondrial and nuclear DNA as well as a reappraisal of the larval morphology, the genus Percnon Gistel, 1848, is formally removed from the Plagusiidae and recognized as a separate family, Percnidae Števciˇ c,´ 2005. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Geographic variation in the degree of association of decapod (brachyuran and anomuran) crabs with the sea urchin Diadema antillarum was investigated in fringing coral reefs (< 5 m deep) of Bequia, Mayreau, Grenada, Barbados and Tobago in the southeastern Caribbean Sea. Of 991 D. antillarum urchins inspected, 298 (30.07%) hosted decapod crabs with an average of 0.49 crabs per urchin. The frequency of crabs associating with urchins varied geographically, being highest in Bequia (56.68%) and Grenada (40.74%), and lowest in Barbados (6.73% and 5.63% at two sites) and Mayreau (13.33%). Of 487 crabs observed, Percnon gibbesi was the most common species (79.05% of all crabs) followed by unidentified (possibly Pagurus spp.) hermit crabs (8.21%), Stenorhynchus seticornis (6.98%), and unidentified greyish (5.75%) and reddish (0.82%) crabs (possibly Mithraculus coryphe and M. -

Frequency of Percnon gibbesi in relation to Diadema antillarum at Rodney’s Rock By: Rickey Wallace Study Abroad Dominica Summer 2007 Texas A&M University Dr. Bob Wharton Dr. Jim Woolley Abstract The nimble spray crab (Percnon gibbesi) and the long-spined black sea urchin (Diadema antillarum) live together, one as the resident the other as the home. Of 1200 urchins surveyed over 4 days 591 crabs were recorded. The data shows that the North side of Rodney’s Rock has a density of 0.38 crabs per urchin, while the South side is 0.6 crabs per urchin. I hypothesized that there would be a higher density or crabs on the North side, but the data suggest that the reverse is true. There is a much better chance of seeing a crab on the South side where the wave action is the greatest. Introduction A coral reef is an ecosystem that has many plants and creatures relying on one another to survive. At Rodney’s Rock, Dominica, WI, there is one such relationship that I chose to study, and that is the way that the long-spined black urchin Figure 1. The Long-spined urchin is a grazer that feeds on the algae associated with coral reefs. It can be identified by its long black colored spines (up to 30 cm). This role as a grazer is very important for coral reefs because they reduce the amount of algae growth and create places for new life to start (Toller 2003). -

Sa carapace est à peine plus longue que large, et sa longueur mesure jusqu'à 39 mm chez les mâles, 34 mm chez les femelles et entre 26 et 30 mm chez les femelles ovigères. Elle porte trois dents au niveau du front et quatre dents antérolatérales pointues. Chaque patte ambulatoire est munie d'une rangée de fortes épines sur la marge antérieure du mérus. Les pinces des mâles sont inégales et plus fortes que celles des femelles ou des juvéniles. La couleur générale est brunâtre-rougeâtre. Ce crabe furtif est actif le jour. C'est un herbivore plus ou moins strict. Les femelles sont ovigères en saison chaude ; le développement larvaire comporte 6 stades zoé et une mégalope. Ce crabe fréquente les côtes rocheuses, les ports et les marinas où il se cache dans des fissures ou sous des pierres jusqu'à -30 m de profondeur. L'espèce est native de l'Atlantique inter-tropical africain et américain ainsi que du Pacifique américain. L'espèce a pénétré récemment en Méditerranée où elle est considérée comme introduite et envahissante. -

The present study aims to present new records on guitarfishes based on unconventional data collection comprised by citizen scientists’ reports, social and mass media search, in-depth targeted interviews with expert fishermen and on official reconstructed fisheries statistics. This multiple-folds analysis represents a valuable case study for determining potentially important areas for these endangered species with scarcity of records in Greece. Results exhibited a high concertation of guitarfish sightings in two areas of the Greek Aegean part, both very close to published sightings from the Aegean coast of Turkey. We found that the axis of North to South, from Lesvos Island down to Rhodes Island is a critical area for guitarfish in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Additional information on guitarfish sightings will confirm our findings, enrich our knowledge on guitarfish occurrence in the Greek Seas and contribute in future recommendations on their protection, to avoid extinction of these rare batoids in the area.
