IV. PARISH APOSTOLATE: NEW OPPORTUNITIES IN THE LOCAL CHURCH by John E. Rybolt, C.M. Beginning with the original contract establishing the Community, 17 April 1625, Vincentians have worked in parishes. At fIrst they merely assisted diocesan pastors, but with the foundation at Toul in 1635, the fIrst outside of Paris, they assumed local pastorates. Saint Vincent himself had been the pastor of Clichy-Ia-Garenne near Paris (1612-1625), and briefly (1617) of Buenans and Chatillon les-Dombes in the diocese of Lyons. Later, as superior general, he accepted eight parish foundations for his community. He did so with some misgiving, however, fearing the abandonment of the country poor. A letter of 1653 presents at least part of his outlook: ., .parishes are not our affair. We have very few, as you know, and those that we have have been given to us against our will, or by our founders or by their lordships the bishops, whom we cannot refuse in order not to be on bad terms with them, and perhaps the one in Brial is the last that we will ever accept, because the further along we go, the more we fmd ourselves embarrassed by such matters. l In the same spirit, the early assemblies of the Community insisted that parishes formed an exception to its usual works. The assembly of 1724 states what other Vincentian documents often said: Parishes should not ordinarily be accepted, but they may be accepted on the rare occasions when the superior general .. , [and] his consul tors judge it expedient in the Lord.2 229 Beginnings to 1830 The founding document of the Community's mission in the United States signed by Bishop Louis Dubourg, Fathers Domenico Sicardi and Felix De Andreis, spells out their attitude toward parishes in the new world, an attitude differing in some respects from that of the 1724 assembly. -

Revised 3/11/2019 HISTORY OF THE NATIONAL CATHOLIC COMMITTEE FOR GIRL SCOUTS AND CAMP FIRE By Virginia Reed The present National Catholic Committee for Girl Scouts and Camp Fire dates back to the early days of the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) and the National Catholic Welfare Conference. Although it has functioned in various capacities and under several different names, this committee's purpose has remained the same: to minister to the Catholic girls in Girl Scouts (at first) and Camp Fire (since 1973). Beginnings The relationship between Girl Scouting and Catholic youth ministry is the result of the foresight of Juliette Gordon Low. Soon after founding the Girl Scout movement in 1912, Low traveled to Baltimore to meet James Cardinal Gibbons and consult with him about her project. Five years later, Joseph Patrick Cardinal Hayes of New York appointed a representative to the Girl Scout National Board of Directors. The cardinal wanted to determine whether the Girl Scout program, which was so fine in theory, was equally sound in practice. Satisfied on this point, His Eminence publicly declared the program suitable for Catholic girls. In due course, the four U.S. Cardinals and the U.S. Catholic hierarchy followed suit. In the early 1920's, Girl Scout troops were formed in parochial schools and Catholic women eagerly became leaders in the program. When CYO was established in the early 1930's, Girl Scouting became its ally as a separate cooperative enterprise. In 1936, sociologist Father Edward Roberts Moore of Catholic charities, Archdiocese of New York, studied and approved the Girl Scout program because it was fitting for girls to beome "participating citizens in a modern, social democracy." This support further enhanced the relationship between the Catholic church and Girl Scouting. -

Dolan Kenrick-Glennon Seminary Archdiocese of St. Louis Archbishop Gerety Lecture at Seton Hall University, October 15, 1992 "Hence we cheerfully sent one who should represent Our Person..." wrote Pope Leo XII in his encyclical Longinqua Oceani1 to the Church of the United States, January 6, 1895, referring to the appointment of the first apostolic delegate, Archbishop Francesco Satolli, just two years previous. That January 21, 1993, will be the centennial of this event suggested the topic of this year's Archbishop Gerety Lecture, "A Century of Papal Representation in the United States." Thank you for the invitation to be part of this distinguished lecture series. For the record, I have dedicated this meagre effort to the preeminent church historian of the United States, Monsignor John Tracy Ellis, my teacher, mentor and friend who, at 87, is now recuperating from hip surgery in Washington, D.C. May the Lord of Truth whom he has served so diligently be close to him in his recovery. I propose to develop this topic under five points. First, I will treat the way the Holy See approached America prior to Archbishop Satolli's appointment; secondly, I will consider the give-and-take surrounding his nomination in 1893; then will come a staccato-like overview of the comings-and-goings of his 10 successors; fourthly, I will take a look at just what, in general, the delegates have done, offering two examples of their activities; and, finally, I will conclude with a segment on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the government of the United States. -

Historical Revie^Kr The State Historical Society of Missouri COLUMBIA, MISSOURI COVER DESCRIPTION: Thomas Miller was the subject of George Caleb Bingham's only known miniature. Born in Pennsylvania in 1811, Miller settled in Mis souri in 1834. Before that he had attended Washing ton College in Pennsylvania, Indiana University and Transylvania University Law School in Lexington, Kentucky. In 1833 he taught at Transylvania. Miller's close friend and former classmate, Colum bian James S. Rollins, recommended Miller for the first presidency of Columbia College, a forerunner of the University of Missouri. Miller held that position from 1834 to 1836 when he resigned because of poor health. He then formed a law partnership with Rollins and the two men also acquired a newspaper that became known as the Columbia Patriot. In 1841 Miller decided to leave Missouri for the drier climate available in New Mexico. He planned to live in Santa Fe but died enroute on September 15. lingham's 4" x 3" oil-on-canvasboard oval probably was painted in 1837. The oval stayed in the Rollins family until 1961 when Ruth Rollins Westfall pre sented it to the State Historical Society. Saint Vincent's College and Theological Education John E. Rybolt, C.M Saint Vincent's College has played a role in the life of Cape Girardeau since 1838. Its faculty taught the sons of Mississippi Valley settlers, and also provided education for the priesthood from 1859 to 1893. In this 34 year period, the seminary department rose, declined, and rose again. It endured threats from post-Civil War bigotry against Catholics, and abandonment by the sponsoring bishops. Surviving rumors of an unhealthy climate, Saint Vincent's went nearly bankrupt, but managed to prepare its graduates for the priesthood where they served the West with dis- tinction-1 The Vincentian Community, established since 1818 at Perryville, began to send Missionaries to Cape around 1825. Fr. John Timon, later head of American Vincentians, visited the area regularly from 1828. Within four years he had contacted enough Catholics on his visits to found a parish. -
