Every two months, a pdf Newsletter is created with a round-up of all news items since the last Newsletter. Some of you will have noticed that the South Hill Connection website has changed recently. This is the long-promised upgrade to a Wordpress site. The advantages of the new site are its clean and modern look, and the way it is controlled from a dashboard instead of in a web-editing programme. News items and calendar Events can now be added to the website at any time, and, crucially, by anybody with a user account. In the coming months, we will be looking for representatives from the local groups to take on these tasks. Newsletter number 41 is as interesting and well-rounded as we have come to expect, with favourites such as Barbara’s Gardening page, Church Matters and Parish Hall News, as well as individual items like Sarah’s trip to Kolkata, and information about events in South Hill and the surrounding areas. To me it seems that this Autumn will be strong on cultural activities – music, art and theatre. Read all about it here! Sue Skelton (Editor) 2 Neighbourhood Plan Community Day On the afternoon of Saturday September 20th, the Community came together at the Parish Hall, Golberdon to showcase all that goes on in the Parish. Businesses and organisations demonstrated their wares, members of St Sampson’s Church provided free tea and cakes, and a brand new ladies’ choir provided entertainment from the stage. The event was well attended, and it is hoped that it raised awareness of the South Hill Neighbourhood Plan which is in its early stages. Full write-up can be found at the end of the newsletter on Bonus Page number 27! ____________________ Singing Workshops off to a Flying Start After months of preparation and anticipation the first Singing Workshop of World War One songs took place in Callington Town Hall on September 6th. An enthusiastic group of about 40 singers attended and were led by Jenny Coombe and Callington Town Band through many rousing, popular choruses - and a few that were less well-known. The aim of these Workshops is to familiarise the singers with the songs prior to them forming the chorus that will sing in the dramatic production in November. This production is called 'And Some Came Home' and tells the story of WW1 as seen by those who took part and is a Community event that has been supported by grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund and FEAST. There is still time for anyone who would like to take part to make contact with Shirley Morse (01579 350336 or [email protected]). _______________________ Letter to the editor Dear Editor I would really like to congratulate Debbie who lives in the Square in Golberdon. She has made a wonderful job of weeding many of the planters in the play area. It was really lovely to take a walk and see the marvellous work she has done and it makes such a difference to how others then look after the park. Thanks Debbie, I really appreciate your effort! Andrea Hemmens I’m sure Andrea speaks for us all. Well done Debbie! - Ed _______________________ 3 World War 1 Singing Workshops Do you enjoy a good sing-along? Then come to Callington Town Hall on Saturday, September 6th, at 10am and join many others in the first of several of Callington's World War One 'Singing Workshops'. These are FREE and have been made possible by grants from The Heritage Lottery Fund and FEAST. You may be old enough to know all the words or young enough to have never heard them but one thing's for sure - belting out 'Pack Up Your Troubles' or 'Goodbye, Dolly Gray' will be the ideal way to start the weekend! This is a community project that will involve the Community College, the Town Band, local choirs and anyone who would like to help commemorate WW 1 and it will culminate in three performances of a professionally directed dramatic production in November. Quite literally a 'once in a lifetime' opportunity Contact Shirley Morse (01579 50336) for more information. 4 This is a free community event with something for everyone. As usual we have a large street fair full of goods perfect for Christmas presents for all the family and Rowlands fair offers fun for everyone. In the Town Hall the bee keepers have a selection of wonderful local honey products as well as live bees! The local schools have been busy creating pic- tures for our children’s art competition and their wonderful entries can all be seen in the hall from 9am to 7pm. Why not stop off for a drink while visiting all the stalls inside the hall, our Teas with the bees is always popular. Around the town our shop window competition is on the theme of inventions that changed the world. We will be having live music during the day and early evening on our street stage. In the council chamber Liskeard model club will once more amaze everyone with their skill. Please note that the whole of New Road and the Car park will be closed to traffic on Honey Fair day. Alternative parking is available at the Saltash Road free car park and the recreation field. It’s going to be a great day, and we would love to see you there. It’s still not too late to book a stall. He told us about his monastic life with the Order of the Redemptorists which included work in mental hospitals and a home for the deaf. By the fourth year of training Kevin decided not to become ordained as a priest and currently conducts funerals and is chaplain to the Royal British Legion who look after injured soldiers. He can currently be seen at the church of Our Lady in Callington. The event will run from Monday 6th October until Saturday 1st November. You are welcome to come along and have a look when the exhibition is on and remember there is free parking for customers visiting all the businesses there. Mid November through to Christmas Eve will host an ‘Open Exhibition’ and incorporates the Victorian Market on Saturday 6th December. For any enquiries about any of the exhibitions or to reserve wall space for the next 'Trio of Art’,please ring 01579 389331 and not forgetting Flowers for All Occasions - Blooming Marvellous! 6 South Hill Parish Hall CHAIRMANS REPORT South Hill Parish Harvest Supper was well supported with 70 people attending and it was great to see so many new members of the parish. The supper was cold meats with a selection of salads followed by different fruit crumbles. A big thank you to the hall committee for providing such a first class supper - Lucy, Wendy, Debbie, Dave, Nick, Clare, Liz, Rachael, Ali, and those who brought desserts, raffle prizes, washed up and put away tables. Entertainment was provided by Jen and her guitar, followed by the raffle and a lively auction of the produce and items people had brought along. A big thank you for all the support. We will be holding the children's Christmas party on Saturday 13th December priced £3.00 per child to include party tea, games, disco and a visit from Father Christmas . The next Parish Hall Committee meeting is on Monday 20th October.
