Bodhi Path and Lama Ole Nydahl by Shamar Rinpoche 06.07.10 An Answer to Questions Raised about Bodhi Path and Lama Ole Nydahl This letter is my response to two questions that I have been asked by many people. The first question concerns Lama Ole Nydahl. Since Lama Ole frequently explains the connection between Dharma and sex, emphasizing that the bliss of sex is the experience of mind, the question has arisen as to why I continue to support him. The second question is why the Bodhi Path Centers I organized are not Vajrayana. What follows here is a combined answer to both questions. I believe that most of the people who ask about my support of Lama Ole are quite new to Kagyu Buddhism. Lama Ole came to Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim with his wife Hannah in the late 1960's in order to meet and study with His Holiness the 16th Karmapa. I was a young man then, only 17 or 18 years old, and could not speak any English at all. At that time I was a student myself. In fact most of the Tibetan Lamas in those days could not speak English and there was only one translator at Rumtek at that time, a Bhutanese doctor named Dr. Jigme. At Rumtek, Lama Ole received many teachings from His Holiness the late Karmapa and from Tenga Rinpoche. From time to time he had to go to Darjeeling to get his Sikkim permit renewed and while he was there he studied a lot with Kalu Rinpoche in Sonada. -

1 Buddhism, Diversity and ‘Race’: Multiculturalism and Western convert Buddhist movements in East London – a qualitative study Thesis submitted by Sharon Elizabeth SMITH Goldsmiths’ College, University of London in partial fulfilment of the requirements for degree of PhD History 2 DECLARATION I hereby declare that the work set out in this thesis for PhD History is entirely my own Sharon Elizabeth SMITH 3 ABSTRACT This study considers the development of convert Buddhism in multicultural environments. Its focus is on the encounters of people of colour (defined for the purposes of this study as people of African, Asian and Caribbean descent) with Western convert Buddhist movements, which tend to be predominantly white and middle-class. The study uses an ethnographic case study approach informed by feminist epistemologies. The case-studies are of two of the largest Western convert Buddhist movements in the UK – the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) and Sōka Gakkai International-UK (SGI-UK) – and focus on their branches in the multicultural inner-city location of East London. The findings suggest that most Buddhists of colour in these movements come from the second generation of the diaspora. For the FWBO, there is an apparently hegemonic discourse of middle-class whiteness that people of colour and working class members of this movement have to negotiate as part of their involvement. In contrast, for SGI-UK, the ethos is one of a moral cosmopolitanism that encourages intercultural dialogue thus facilitating the involvement of a considerably more multicultural and international following. People of colour find that their practices of the techniques of the self provided by each movement enable them to feel more empowered in relation to their quotidian experience of racisms and racialisation, as well as encouraging them in a more anti-essentialist approach to identity that sees it as fluid and contingent. -

Die Katastrophe, die danach über Eu- Aropa hereinbrach, ist bekannt. Am selben Tag setzte ein anderer Deutscher im Norden Indiens gleichfalls ein Zeichen. Ernst Lothar Hoffmann, der in- zwischen Anagarika Govinda hieß, gab an diesem 14. Oktober 1933 in Dar- jeeling die Gründung des Ārya Maitreya Maṇḍala bekannt. Anders als beim Geschrei des Joseph Goebbels nahm die Weltpresse von diesem Ereignis keine Notiz. Eher still trat ein Impuls auf, der den polari- sierenden Ideologien des Zeitgeistes zuwiderlief: Govinda rief einen Orden ins Leben, der Menschen ungeachtet von Geschlecht, ethnischen, nationa- len, kulturellen und religiösen Hintergründen um ein Ideal zusammenführ- te, das bildhaft der Buddha Maitreya verkörpert, dessen Name der Liebende bedeutet. Was für die breite Öffentlichkeit im Lärm der Epoche unterging, würdigten in Indien herausragende Persönlichkeiten. Rabindranath Tagore drückte sei- ne Freude über das Auftreten des Ārya Maitreya Maṇḍala aus. Schon 1919 hatte der Nobelpreisträger für Literatur von 1913, dessen Persönlichkeit und Werk Govinda stark prägten, auf Maitreya als Symbol des Friedens hingewie- sen.1 Vertreter der indischen, sikkimesischen, nepalesischen und tibetischen Volksgruppen des Himalajaraums schlossen sich dem Orden als Mitglieder und Freunde an, etwa Sardar Bahadur S. -
