MESSAGE from FIBA President & Secretary general

Bob Elphinston Patrick Baumann FIBA President FIBA Secretary General IOC Member

U19 World Championship is pure excitement!!

The FIBA U19 World Championship is the place where players are made and stars are born. That was the reason for FIBA deciding to move from a four-year cycle to staging the event every two years as of 2007. This will ensure that every generation of global basketball talent will have the chance to compete at the highest international level. Players are at their full athletic strength, but are not as coach driven as they will be in their career. That will guarantee pure excitement and passion. Big stars like Vlade Divac, , Vince Carter, Toni Kukoc, Wang Zhi Zhi, Andrei Kirilenko, and their career at this championship. New Zealand and the city of Auckland have been awarded the organisation of the 9th edition of the FIBA U19 World Championship for Men. The 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship marks the first time that New Zealand has hosted a global basketball event and it is a well deserved honour after the recent success of the senior teams on a global stage. We would like to extend our gratitude to Basketball New Zealand and the city of Auckland for hosting this event and to all our partners and the many helping hands which made this event possible. Welcome to Auckland and good luck to all teams, officials and visitors.

 WELCOME to Auckland

The Auckland region sprawls over a narrow isthmus between the sparkling waters of the Waitemata and Manukau Harbours. The cosmopolitan city is surrounded by beautiful beaches as well as a cloak of rainforest on the surrounding hills and 48 dormant volcanic cones to add to the stunning geography.

More than just a great city – Auckland is a whole region full of things to see and do. Within half an hour of standing on a bustling city street you could be exploring one of the harbour’s islands, on a boat dolphin watching, walking through native forest or sipping wine at a vineyard in the countryside.

Auckland’s sheer variety of activities is matched with its range of accommodation options, from luxury lodges and resorts to world-class hotels. Its people are a melting pot of ethnicities, including European, South Pacific and Asian cultures, with a strong indigenous Maori heritage. This diversity brings with it an abundance of unique dining and shopping experiences. Enjoy your Auckland Experience.

HISTORY OF NEW ZEALAND BASKETBALL

Basketball was introduced into New Zealand by the YMCA, encouraged by Mormon missionaries and popular among servicemen returning from the Pacific after World War II.The first national championships were held in 1938 and continued until the early 1980s. These tournaments were replaced in the 1980s by the men’s and women’s national leagues. Internationally, the Tall Blacks men and Tall Ferns women have both attended world championship tournaments and Olympic Games. The men were invited to the 1986 world championships in Spain where they defeated Malaysia 77-75 for their first victory at this level. The women attended the 1994 championships in Australia and had their only victory against Kenya 93-76 in the final round. In 2000, both men and women attended the Sydney Olympics where they each won one game, the men beat Angola 70-60, while the women overcame Senegal 72-69. The men continued their emergence on the world stage by stunning Australia in the 2001 FIBA Oceania Championship, their first series victory over the Boomers, to qualify for the 2002 world championships. Prior to the 2001 success, New Zealand had only beaten Australia once, in game two of the 1978 FIBA Oceania series at Walter Nash Stadium, Lower Hutt. New Zealand basketball’s watershed moment came at the 2002 FIBA World Championship in Indianapolis. Under the guidance of coach Tab Baldwin, the Tall Blacks stunned the world by going from virtual unknowns all the way to the final four, and at the 2002 World Champs leading defending champions Yugoslavia at halftime of their semifinal, a game watched by an estimated 750,000 viewers back home. The Tall Blacks defeated Russia, Venezuela, China and Puerto Rico on their way to the semifinals, the best performance by an Oceania country at a FIBA men’s world championship. Captain Pero Cameron, still a member of the Tall Blacks, was named in the tournament team, alongside Yao Ming, , Manu Ginobili and Peja Stojakovic. Since then, Tall Blacks and Tall Ferns both played at the 2004 Athens Olympics, the Tall Blacks upsetting Serbia & Montenegro in pool play on their way to 10th, while the Tall Ferns knocked off China and South Korea to qualify for the quarterfinals for the first time. Two years later, the Tall Blacks were back at the FIBA World Championship, progressing to the eighth-finals before falling to Olympic gold medalists Tall Blacks at the 2004 Athens Olympics Argentina. When Australia captured the FIBA World Championship for Women, they again left the way open for the Tall Ferns to attend their third consecutive Olympics in Beijing, 2008. En route, the Kiwi women achieved their first ever victory over the Opals. Basketball New Zealand organises and operates up to 40 premiership and national tournaments in various age-groups for its member associations, along with the National Basketball League, Conference Basketball League and Women’s Basketball Championship. With the success of the national teams, Basketball New Zealand has had to increase its service of the code’s grassroots to foster more and better players, coaches, officials and administrators. Heart Children New Zealand is excited to be the nominated charity of the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship. What an awesome event to have in New Zealand! 12 babies are born every week with a heart defect in New Zealand. There is not a day goes by that a child does not undergo open heart surgery at Auckland’s Paediatric Heart Unit, or new parents face the prospect of caring for a chronically ill child. For many of these children having a heart condition means extended and regular periods in hospital for corrective surgeries and procedures, ongoing medication, tests and the possibility of further surgery, further complications. From before birth, surgery, through rehabilitation and into the future Heart Children New Zealand understands how important it is to have a strong support network to fall back on. We need help so that we can continue to grow this network. We hope you all enjoy the competition, best of luck to the teams and please support Heart Children New Zealand in any way you can.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

New Zealand – Logan van Beek Point guard Logan van Beek has stepped up as much as any Junior Tall Black this year. Chasing a spot in the FIBA U19 World Championship team earlier this year, he went from being just another member of the JTBs’ extended squad to, within a couple of weeks, joining the JTBs’ March tour to Melbourne and stepping onto a National Basketball League court for the Youthtown Auckland Stars. Living on Auckland’s North Shore and training with the JTBs’ assistant coach and the NZ Breakers Academy, van Beek had answered an SOS call from Stars coach Kenny Stone after an injury to their on-court general, 2008 Rookie of the Year Tyrone Davey. The 18-year-old, 1.83m pivot stepped into the breach, playing nine games (including four starts) for the Stars. He netted 49 points, making all 11 of his free-throw attempts, dishing out 22 assists and pulling down 20 rebounds. Also a cricketer, as an all-rounder and right-arm quick he was a member of the New Zealand U19 cricket side for their internal tour against provincial A teams in February and will shift his priority back to cricket after the FIBA U19 World Championship – he’s hoping to make the junior Black Caps squad for the ICC U19 World Cup in Kenya next February. “It’s basically half-and-half with basketball and cricket this year,” van Beek says. “After the world championships are over, I’m going full-on with cricket. And then after that, I’ll have to make a decision between them.” But right now, basketball has his focus.

Australia - Hugh Greenwood This Tasmanian Institute of Sport and Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder was named Junior Male Australian Player of the Year in 2008 for his unrelenting on-court effort. A hard-working defender with an uncanny ability to find his way to the basket, Greenwood led Australia to gold at the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Festival, averaging 14 points and 3.5 assists for the tournament and registering a game high 27 points on 12-20 shooting in the final against China. In May this year Greenwood took the giant step up as the youngest player named in the Australian Boomers squad.

USA – Seth Curry USA guard Seth Curry is a gifted natural shooting guard who possesses remarkable range. Ranked as the NCAA’s leading freshman scorer in 2007-08 after averaging 20.2 for Liberty University, he set Liberty and Big South Conference records for freshman scoring. He is the only freshman in Big South history to hit at least 100 3-pointers. He finished with 102 made 3-pointers. Seth comes from a basketball family. His father Dell starred at Virginia Tech and played most of his 16 NBA seasons with the . He was respected as one of the NBA’s most prolific 3-point shooters. His older brother Stephen recently starred at Davidson College and is expected to be an early selection in the 2009 NBA Draft.

Greece – Nikos Pappas Touted as a second round NBA draft pick, Pappas has a big reputation and has proved his worth so far at many levels. The 1.94m point guard and shooting guard signed with Spanish ACB league club Iurbentia Bilbao before being loaned to Real Madrid in the Spanish IEB league, having made his pro debut at the HEBA A1 league with Panellinios Athens during the 2006-07 season and steadily progressing from there. Pappas was named the MVP at the prestigious Albert Schweitzer tournament and played in the 2009 Nike Hoop Summit, where he helped the World Select Team defeat Team USA. Poro, the Official Mascot of the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship. Poro is an amalgamation of two of New Zealand ’s natural features. His mother Pyro, a volcanic fireball from Rangitoto Island, and his father Hydro, a water droplet from the cool waters of the Hauraki Gulf, are responsible for Poro’s fierce enthusiasm and silky smooth moves on the court.
