I listened to the audio book and flailed around Doctor Who: The Stone Rose: The History Collection my car for most of it. David Tennant is an astoundingly good reader, and there's something delightful about how pitch-perfect his character voices are and how fun to have him actually sound like the Doctor. Packed with Doctor-and-Rose moments, and with a fun plot twist and lots of close brushes with time paradoxes that make up for the seemingly interminable and gruesome time the Doctor spends in the Flavian Amphitheater. I completely forgot that I'd read this book, given that I read it a long time ago now. Can I just take this tiny 'pocket of time' to mention how much I miss Doctor x Rose? Personally I feel the stories and characters were beyond the standard of what it was made out to be the twists had my family and I literally huddled around the TV screen either in a state of shock or sobbing uncontrollably. It was undenia I completely forgot that I'd read this book, given that I read it a long time ago now. It was undeniably underrated and for me an amazing Doctor Who: The Stone Rose: The History Collection to come out of the UK but now it just irks me and in my opinion has been reduced to nothing more than a real kids show with nothing left to enjoy about it. I used to follow it ritually up until Tennant left but now I barely have the interest to see if it's still going. It's just my Doctor Who: The Stone Rose: The History Collection, I guess. Luckily I had Torchwood as comfort food but now Anyway back to the Doctor Who: The Stone Rose: The History Collection bookin terms of pace, the book is a little slow at the beginning but it picks up and is a really enjoyable read. I liked the historical setting and I just adore the characters anyway, so I liked the dialogue and wit; Rayner captured a lot of the Tenth Doctor's humour. Also the Doctor and Rose moments were lovely to read and due to the fact that Doctor Who books are almost always left abandoned in my 'future read' lists including the very old ones it was nice to read about the Doctor's adventures for a change. An extra personal part Yes, I've succumbed to admitting I was or is? I've met John Barrowman and David Tennant and they are the loveliest people ever who did the show justice with their acting especially David I mean good lord as well as Billie, Freema, Catherine, John, Bernard, etc really, the list is endless. You could say I'm a bit of an old Doctor Who geek and oh god fangirl. Yeah, I used the word. I spent a hell of a lot of my allowance on DW merchandise a sonic screwdriver, NOT a euphemism and attending various conventions and exhibitions. I spend a lot of my time not only watching the old series with Tennant and Eccleston, but also the old ones with the likes of Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee. They're just too good to miss!

  • From Balaclavas to Jumpsuits: the Multiple Histories and Identities of Doctor Who’S Cybermen
ATLANTIS. Journal of the Spanish Association of Anglo-American Studies. 30.1 (June 2008): 85–100 ISSN 0210-6124 From Balaclavas to Jumpsuits: The Multiple Histories and Identities of Doctor Who’s Cybermen Lincoln Geraghty University of Portsmouth [email protected] Through a detailed analysis of the Cybermen’s narrative evolution and changing cyborg appearance, this essay maintains that throughout the decades that spanned its series’ run, Doctor Who addressed key fears present in British society: fear of technology, loss of identity, American economic power and totalitarianism. These fears not only evolved alongside the physical appearance of the Cybermen, but also changed in significance as British television audiences accepted the consequences of technological assimilation and looked to the future in anticipation rather than apprehension. The general field of study on the cyborg in popular culture remains transfixed on the products of the big screen; American cinema is the focus for many works which continue to examine the cyborg as a predominantly American reality, for example Star Trek’s The Borg dominate the work done by scholars in these fields. Fear of technology, or fear of the automaton, is thus depicted as somehow an inherently American fear. However, this essay attempts to correct this imbalance and bring close attention to bear on the Cybermen as televisual figures of a technological complexity; one that is not necessarily American or cinematic, but rather British and televisual in origin and nature. Keywords: Cybermen; Doctor Who; cyborg; technology; television; Pedler, Kit; Science Fiction; British Culture; history; totalitarianism “Resistance is useless… you will be eliminated”.
