Doctor Was Being No Help at All of Course
The Feast of the Drowned by Stephen Cole Prologue ONE TWO THREE FOUR FIVE SIX SEVEN EIGHT NINE TEN ELEVEN TWELVE THIRTEEN FOURTEEN FIFTEEN SIXTEEN SEVENTEEN EIGHTEEN NINETEEN TWENTY Acknowledgements About the Author For Paul Magrs How can something so big sink so fast? The thought kept drumming through Jay Selby’s head. He splashed and slithered over the slippery deck. It listed so sharply to starboard he could barely keep his footing. The wind whipped at his uniform, stung his skin. He stared around as if he might sight the enemy. Nothing. The black sky, the churning darkness of the North Sea, there was no difference between them. ‘No lifeboats!’ The shouts rose above the roar of the sea. ‘They’ve taken the lifeboats!’ There was a crew of 173 on board HMS Ascendant, tough, capable sailors all of them. They shouldn’t be screaming, Jay thought. He clung on to a rail as a crowd of ratings scrambled past him. They shouldn’t be screaming. We shouldn’t be sinking so damned fast. The frigate was armed to the teeth: Sea Wolf missiles, torpedoes, the Vickers gun. She could clobber anything from a submarine to an enemy fighter, so why were they sinking without a single shot fired? One of the ratings slipped and fell. Jay staggered over, helped him up. It was Barker, the loudmouth, the blond joker; part of the gun crew. He looked terrified. ‘We’ve got to get to the upper deck,’ Barker shouted. ‘They took –’ ‘The lifeboats, I know.’ Jay dragged him to his feet. -

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE CmCHESTER an accredited college of the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON ABSTRACT DANCE Doctor of Philosophy DANCE, SPACE AND SUBJECTIVITY by Valerie A. Briginshaw This thesis has been completed as a requirement for a higher degree of the University of Southampton Thisthesis, by examining relationships between dancing bodies and space, argues that postmodern dance can challenge traditional representations of subjectivity and suggest alternatives. Through close readings of postmodern dances, informed by current critical theory, constructions of subjectivity are explored. The limits and extent of subjectivity are exposed when and where bodies meet space. Through a precise focus on this body/space interface, I reveal various ways in which dance can challenge, trouble and question fixed perceptions of subjectivity. The representation in dance of the constituents of difference that partly make up subjectivity, (such as gender, 'race', sexuality and ability), is a main focus in the exploration of body/space relationships presented in the thesis. Based on the premise that dance, space and subjectivity are constructions that can mutually inform and construct each other, this thesis offers frameworks for exploring space and subjectivity in dance. These explorations draw on a selective reading of pertinent poststructuralist theories which are all concerned with critiquing the premises of Western philosophy, which revolve around the concept of an ideal, rational, unified subject, which, in turn, relies on dualistic thinking that enforces a way of seeing things in terms of binary oppositions. -

The Hinchcliffe/Holmes Era of Doctor Who (1975-77) Matt Hills
‘Gothic’ Body Parts in a ‘Postmodern’ Body of Work? The Hinchcliffe/Holmes Era of Doctor Who (1975-77) Matt Hills (1) The names Philip Hinchcliffe and Robert Holmes may not be greatly familiar to many academic readers of this volume, unless, that is, they also happen to be fans of the (1963-1989, 1996, 2005-) BBC TV series Doctor Who. Hinchcliffe was the producer of this series on all episodes originally transmitted in the UK between 25/1/1975 and 2/4/77, while Holmes was script editor on all material broadcast between 28/12/74 and 17/12/77. However, he went un-credited in this role on stories where he was named as writer, due to BBC regulations which forbade script editors to commission from themselves (see Howe and Walker, 1998). In story terms, Philip Hinchcliffe produced ‘The Ark in Space’ through to ‘The Talons of Weng-Chiang’, whilst Holmes script-edited stories running from ‘Robot’ through to ‘The Sun Makers’ (1977). Under Hinchcliffe as producer, Holmes also wrote ‘The Ark in Space’, ‘The Deadly Assassin’ and ‘The Talons of Weng-Chiang’, and effectively wrote, or at least heavily reworked, ‘The Pyramids of Mars’ and ‘The Brain of Morbius’ (on-screen, these were attributed to the pseudonyms Stephen Harris and Robin Bland). Today, Philip Hinchcliffe is a regular contributor to DVD commentaries and features accompanying ‘his’ Doctor Who stories. Robert Holmes passed away on 24th May, 1986: his overall contribution to Doctor Who is the subject of a documentary on the DVD release of the (1985) story ‘The Two Doctors’. -
