JANUARY 3 St. Theodosius Orthodox Cathedral Ambo - Page 1 Saint Genevieve was born of wealthy parents in Gaul (modern France) in the village of Nanterre, near Paris, around 422. Her father’s name was Severus, and her mother was called Gerontia. According to the custom of the time, she often tended her father’s flocks on Mt. Valerien. When she was about seven years old, St Germanus of Auxerre (July 31) noticed her as he was passing through Nanterre. The bishop kissed her on the head and told her parents that she would become great in the sight of God, and would lead many to salvation. After Genevieve told him that she wished to dedicate herself to Christ, he gave her a brass medal with the image of the Cross upon it. She promised to wear it around her neck, and to avoid wearing any other ornaments around her neck or on her fingers. When it was reported that Attila the Hun was approaching Paris, Genevieve and the other nuns prayed and fasted, entreating God to spare the city. Suddenly, the barbarians turned away from Paris and went off in another direc- tion. Years later, when she was fifteen, Genevieve was taken to Paris to enter the monastic life. Through fasting, vigil and prayer, she progressed in monasticism, and received from God the gifts of clairvoyance and of working miracles. Gradually, the people of Paris and the surrounding area regarded Genevieve as a holy vessel (2 Tim. 2:21). St Genevieve considered the Saturday night Vigil service to be very important, since it symbolizes how our whole life should be. “We must keep vigil in prayer and fasting so that the Lord will find us ready when He comes,” she said. She was on her way to church with her nuns one stormy Saturday night when the wind blew out her lantern. The nuns could not find their way without a light, since it was dark and stormy, and the road was rough and muddy. St Genevieve made the Sign of the Cross over the lantern, and the candle within was lit with a bright flame. In this manner they were able to make their way to the church for the service. There is a tradition that the church which St Genevieve suggested that King Clovis build in honor of Sts Peter and Paul became her own resting place when she fell asleep in the Lord around 512 at the age of eighty-nine. Her holy relics were later transferred to the church of St Etienne du Mont in Paris. Most of her relics, and those of other saints, were destroyed during the French Revolution. In the Middle Ages, St Genevieve was regarded as the patron saint of wine makers.     1 Primary Source 3.2 THE VENERABLE BEDE ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY OF ENGLAND (731 A.D.)1 The Anglo-Saxon monk and author, known to posterity as the Venerable Bede (c. 672– 735), was apparently a deeply spiritual man described as constantly praising God, even at the last moments of his life, when he could scarcely breathe. A learned scholar with broad knowledge of ancient and early medieval theology and secular writings, he wrote a huge number of works on theology, biblical commentary, the lives of saints, and secular and religious history. His most famous work, excerpted here, recounts the historical development of Britain with a focus on the vibrant evolution of the church. The passage below concerns the conversion of the Anglo-Saxons from paganism to Christianity. Key themes are the care with which missionaries sought to transform customs without giving offense, Christian humility, and how the converts’ belief in miracles wrought in the name of Christ facilitated their conversion. Etymology: From Genovefa, a Gaulish name possibly meaning "That one which is as white as the foam of the sea" and or from the attribute Celta origin, meaning "That which is noble or good caste." SHORT BIOGRAPHY St. Genevieve was born about the year 422, at Nanterre near Paris. While still very young, she desired to devote her life to Jesus. After her parents died, Genevieve went to live with her grandmother where she spent time praying every day. She became very close to Jesus and wanted to bring his goodness to people. Genevieve was a kind, generous person and went out of her way to do good things for others. When Genevieve was seven years old, St. Germain of Auxerre came to her native village on his way to Great Britain to combat the heresy of Pelagius. The child stood in the midst of a crowd gathered around the man of God, who singled her out and foretold her future sanctity. At her desire, the holy Bishop led her to a church, accompanied by all the faithful, and consecrated her to God as a virgin. When Attila was reported to be marching on Paris, the inhabitants of the city prepared to evacuate and run away from a terrible army coming to attack them.

    1 Chapter 2: Usurpers in Gaul The Gallic provinces faced their own challenges in the first decade of the fifth century. Severe threats to Italy under Stilicho’s regime, specifically the invasions of Alaric (401-402) and of an otherwise unknown Gothic leader named Radagaisus (405-406), forced the MVM to take a series of ad hoc decisions favoring the central provinces over the other regions of the western empire. Stilicho severely reduced the military forces of Gaul in order to supply men for the defense of the Italian peninsula.1 He also allowed the traditional conduct of Roman foreign policy with the barbarians beyond the Rhine/Danube limes to lapse, leading to confusion and tension on the frontiers.2 While Stilicho’s actions were arguably necessary responses to the threats of the period, they nevertheless amounted to a fundamental neglect of imperial management of the Gallic provinces. Under the circumstances, it is perhaps inevitable that such neglect would result in problems for the Honorian regime. The usurpations of Maximus and Eugenius remained a part of living memory and the extension of the control of the Theodosian dynasty into the western empire was a relatively new development.3 The potential for the abuse or rejection of Italian authority was therefore quite real, though it was perhaps an unavoidable risk given the circumstances prevailing in Italy during the first half of the decade. 1 Claudian De Bello Gothico 414-429.     THE RICHBOROUGH COIN INSCRIBED "DOMINO CENSAURIO CES." BY ALFRED ANSCOMBE, F.R.HIST.S. THE SO-CALLED " COIN OF A SECOND CARAUSIUS, CAESAR IN BRITAIN IN THE FIFTH CENTURY." T was in the year 1887 that Mr. Arthur J. Evans, M.A. (now Sir Arthur), published1 a very learned and in- teresting paper on a bronze coin which was found at Richborough in Kent, on the site of the Roman fortress called Rutupiae, or Rutupium. The obverse of the coin presents a head modelled in a somewhat barbarous fashion on that of a fourth-century Emperor, diademed, and with the bust draped in the -paludamentum, or military robe of a Roman general. The reverse presents a familiar bronze type of Constans, or perhaps of Constantius II. For these and other well-considered reasons Sir Arthur Evans then assigned the coin to the first half of the fifth century, and quite correctly ; but he mistakenly ascribed it to A.D. 409. He also suggested that the CO/XTA of the inscription on the reverse should be identified with the Constantine who was ruling in Britain in that year. But this British Emperor who is known as Constantine the Third, and who had won imperial status in Britain, Gaul, and Spain in A.D. 407, had made his own son, Constans, Csesar in A.D. 408. Consequently Sir Arthur Evans's claim to have discovered another British Caesar, during the same reign, who was named Carausius but is otherwise quite unknown, must be regarded as inadmissible. Moreover, no historical testimony has ever been adduced in support of this assumption.

Whether that higher power was Jupiter Optimus Maximus or Jesus Christ, people were legitimately worried about their standing with their respective God or gods. As a result, each society developed means of maintaining good relationships with their gods. The religions of the Roman Empire and Christianity seemed to be polar opposites. During the period they were in co-existence, the proponents of each took it upon themselves to point out the differences between each religion. In reality, both Roman religion and Christianity shared many common threads, and many aspects of Christianity developed directly out of Roman religion.

This is a play on the Greek words topos and tropos . One could add that neither is it when we live that saves us. And yet on reading the lives of saints who lived in other epochs and other lands it is easy to feel that it is impossible for us, in our circumstances, to approach their level of repentance and humility. This is one reason why many British and other English speakers are being attracted to the saints of the British Isles: although these saints lived over a millennium ago they lived on our own soil, or at least on that of our ancestors. It is as though these local saints are not only supporting us from heaven, but are also with us here, on the same soil where they once struggled in the spiritual life. How eagerly the saints of Britain must await our prayers that the land in which they so mightily laboured should again become a garden of virtue! It is difficult to be inspired by saints about whom we know little.

Introduction to Dark Age Isles Myth and Reality The period and place covered by this book represent one of the least enlightened by surviving written records from the Dark Ages. Between 337 A.D. and 686 A.D, the reasonably integrated Roman province of Britannia became an early form of England (or Angleland) divided into multiple kingdoms. The imperial language of Latin (in its vulgar form) was no longer spoken. Unusually in former western imperial lands a native language, Brythonic Celtic (Welsh), AND a conqueror language, Anglo-Saxon (English), arose to replace Latin. This linguistic situation is unique with Basque (Euskara) being the only other pre-Roman native survivor. Elsewhere a Latin dialect prevailed or a Germanic or Slavic conqueror language replaced it. There are eight myths listed below that will be addressed by this book. It will describe seven main cultural-historical phases between the death of Emperor Constantine the Great in 337 A.D. and the death of the last Pagan Saes king in 686 A.D. (along with the great Pict victory the year before). The main portion of the book will describe the changing situation in Britannia (England & Wales), Hibernia (Ireland), Caledonia (Pictland/Scotland), and an extended Armorica (Brittany) generation by generation.

    AD 402 - Events on the continent force Stilicho to recall one of the two British legions to assist with the defense of Italy against Alaric and the Visigoths. The recalled legion, known as the Sixth Victrix, was said by Claudian (in "De Bello Gallico," 416) to be "that legion which is stretched before the remoter Britons, which curbs the Scot, and gazes on the tattoo-marks on the pale face of the dying Pict." The barbarians were defeated, this time, at battle of Pollentia. 403 - Victricius, Bishop of Rouen, visited Britain for the purpose of bringing peace to the island's clergy, who were in the midst of a dispute, possibly over the Pelagian heresy. 405 - The British troops, which had been recalled to assist Stilicho, were never returned to Britain as they had to stay in Italy to fight off another, deeper penetration by the barbarian chieftain, Radagaisus. 406 - In early January, 406, a combined barbarian force (Suevi, Alans, Vandals & Burgundians) swept into central Gaul, severing contact between Rome and Britain. In autumn 406, the remaining Roman army in Britain decided to mutiny. One Marcus was proclaimed emperor in Britain, but was immediately assassinated. 407 - In place of the assassinated Marcus, Gratian was elevated "to the purple," but lasted only four months. Constantine III was hailed as the new emperor by Roman garrison in Britian. He proceeded to follow the example of Magnus Maximus by withdrawing the remaining Roman legion, the Second Augusta, and crossing over into Gaul to rally support for his cause. Constantine's departure could be what Nennius called "the end of the Roman Empire in Britain.
