In Plain Sight: Aspects of Developmental Process in Sally Beamish’s Seafarer Trilogy Richard E. McGregor University of Cumbria For a composer who has been described as being ‘at the top of her game and the pinnacle of her profession’, there is currently a complete lack of critical anal- ysis of Sally Beamish’s compositional style and technique.1 Interviews and re- views content themselves with a more or less descriptive approach, while prais- ing her ear for orchestral colour, particularly her affinity with string instruments or with voices. The former is usually explained by reference to her years as an ensemble player with, for example, Lontano and the Raphael Ensemble, while the latter is related back to the fact that her father was an amateur singer, and an aunt had a number of professional singing engagements. There are only so many times that a biography can be repeated, and Beamish is in good company with other well-respected composers such as James MacMillan who suffered for many years from the curse of the biography without analytical content. Interviewed by the author on two occasions, Beamish gave some tentative clues as to the origins of her compositional technique. In 2000 she responded to a question about pre-planning of composition with a hint of late-Stravinskian procedure: I do use [motifs] in a serial type of way with a series of transpositions so that I do make a note square with a 5 note motif and I transpose it and put them all on top of each other and then I have harmonies as well going down.2 Interviewed again during the 2012 Musica Scotica conference in Glasgow, she was somewhat more forthcoming as to the origin and nature of this working method: [Oliver Knussen] showed me a way of manipulating notes. -

It is designed as a ready reference for law enforcement personnel who are confronted with hundreds of slang terms and code words used to identify a wide variety of controlled substances, designer drugs, synthetic compounds, measurements, locations, weapons, and other miscellaneous terms relevant to the drug trade. Although every effort was made to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the information presented, due to the dynamics of the ever-changing drug scene, subsequent additions, deletions, and corrections are inevitable. Future addendums and updates to this report will attempt to capture changed terminology to the furthest extent possible. This compendium of slang terms and code words is alphabetically ordered, with new additions presented in italic text, and identifies drugs and drug categories in English and foreign language derivations. EN 2016 1 EUROPEAN COURT OF AUDITORS Misused English words and expressions in EU publications 2 Preface to the May 2016 edition It has been over two years since I last updated this guide. During this period, I have conducted a number of talks and workshops and have been able to benefit from a good deal of feedback. At the risk of being repetitive, I would once again like to emphasise that I aim neither to criticise the work of EU authors nor to dictate how people should speak or write in their internal or private correspondence. In addition to providing guidance to readers who are unfamiliar with the EU parlance, my comments are mainly designed for those who, for reasons of character or personal taste, would like their English to be as correct as possible1, and those who need, or want, their output to be understood by people outside the European institutions, particularly in our two English-speaking member states. This takes up a principle that is clearly set out in the Court of Auditor’s performance audit manual: ‘In order to meet the addressees’ requirements, reports should be drafted for the attention of an interested but non-expert reader who is not necessarily familiar with the detailed EU [or audit] context’. Roughly translated, this means that we need to be aware of what constitutes our in-house jargon and attempt to avoid it, particularly in documents intended for publication. Of course, if a text is exclusively for internal consumption or it is not necessary for the ‘European citizen’ to be able to understand it, there may be grounds for ignoring the advice below. -

Language Development Language Development
Language Development rom their very first cries, human beings communicate with the world around them. Infants communicate through sounds (crying and cooing) and through body lan- guage (pointing and other gestures). However, sometime between 8 and 18 months Fof age, a major developmental milestone occurs when infants begin to use words to speak. Words are symbolic representations; that is, when a child says “table,” we understand that the word represents the object. Language can be defined as a system of symbols that is used to communicate. Although language is used to communicate with others, we may also talk to ourselves and use words in our thinking. The words we use can influence the way we think about and understand our experiences. After defining some basic aspects of language that we use throughout the chapter, we describe some of the theories that are used to explain the amazing process by which we Language9 A system of understand and produce language. We then look at the brain’s role in processing and pro- symbols that is used to ducing language. After a description of the stages of language development—from a baby’s communicate with others or first cries through the slang used by teenagers—we look at the topic of bilingualism. We in our thinking. examine how learning to speak more than one language affects a child’s language develop- ment and how our educational system is trying to accommodate the increasing number of bilingual children in the classroom. Finally, we end the chapter with information about disorders that can interfere with children’s language development. -

Article 22 Gay Subculture Identification: Training Counselors to Work With Gay Men Justin L. Maki Maki, Justin L., is a counselor education doctoral student at Auburn University. His research interests include counselor preparation and issues related to social justice and advocacy. Abstract Providing counseling services to gay men is considered an ethical practice in professional counseling. With the recent changes in the Defense of Marriage Act and legalization of gay marriage nationwide, it is safe to say that many Americans are more accepting of same-sex relationships than in the past. However, although societal attitudes are shifting towards affirmation of gay rights, division and discrimination, masculinity shaming, and within-group labeling between gay men has become more prevalent. To this point, gay men have been viewed as a homogeneous population, when the reality is that there are a variety of gay subcultures and significant differences between them. Knowledge of these subcultures benefits those in and out-of-group when they are recognized and understood. With an increase in gay men identifying with a subculture within the gay community, counselors need to be cognizant of these subcultures in their efforts to help gay men self-identify. An explanation of various gay male subcultures is provided for counselors, counseling supervisors, and counselor educators. Keywords: gay men, subculture, within-group discrimination, masculinity, labeling Providing professional counseling services and educating counselors-in-training to work with gay men is a fundamental responsibility of the counseling profession (American Counseling Association [ACA], 2014). Although not all gay men utilizing counseling services are seeking services for problems relating to their sexual orientation identification (Liszcz & Yarhouse, 2005), it is important that counselors are educated on the ways in which gay men identify themselves and other gay men within their own community. -

Last year you heard the terms Perseverance, Ownership and Practice or POP! This is important to keep in mind as we work with your child as learners (notice not students). A learner is a person who is trying to gain knowledge or skill in something by studying, practicing or being taught. A student is a person who attends a school, college or university. We want your child to be an active learner. Facing challenges in the safe envi- ronment of the high school, gaining knowledge by lots of Perseverance, Ownership and Practice. We want them to POP! At our district retreat, I was reminded of a story about an elder Cherokee and his grandson. One evening the elder Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside all peo- ple. He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us. One is Fear. It carries anxiety, concern, uncertainty, hesitancy, indecision and inaction. The other is Faith. It brings calm, conviction, excitement and action.” The grandson thought about it for a mo- ment and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf wins?” The old grandfather replied, “The one you feed.” Let’s remember as we start the 2016-2017 school year to feed the wolf of Faith and let the wolf of Fear starve.
