Court House Sandford Orleigh | | | TQ12 2SQ COURT HOUSE HISTORY

The story of Sandford Orleigh is well documented by numerous books which chart its interesting history and indeed the history of some of its more well-known occupants. The house was built in 1832 by George Templer, a local industrialist, as “his dream home”. Templer was famous for building a granite tramway from to . The Dartmoor stone was shipped on from and exported to London, where it was used to build London Bridge, the National Gallery and the British Museum. Sandford Orleigh next passed to the traveller John Ingle who was renowned for being a great art collector and wine connoisseur. After his death, a sale was held at Sandford Orleigh selling off his cellar of wines (some 6555 bottles) and also his prized art collection of 142 works including several magnificent gallery works including Rembrandt, Canaletto, Titian, Vandyck, to name but a few.

The next occupants of Sandford Orleigh were Sir Samuel White Baker the famous explorer and author and his wife Lady Florence Baker, who lived at the property from 1875 until 1916. Many famous historical figures were to visit or stay at Sandford Orleigh l; all during this time, including their friends General Gordon and the Prince of Wales (who sent the two princes Eddy and George - the future George V - to stay for occasional weekends when they were midshipmen on the Britannia), the Dukes of Somerset and St Albans, statesmen like Salisbury and Kitchener and great explorers like Stanley and Burton. In more recent years, the Sandford Orleigh became the subject of a complete restoration in 200 I.

STEP INSIDE

Court House is sat in a prominent position at the centre of Sandford Orleigh. The double opening, Royal Blue front doors open into a entrance porch which is bathed in blue light from the stain glass windows. Glazed doors from here open into the Sitting Room/Dining Room. This is an impressive space which runs the full width of the property. It has lovely engineered oak flooring and is arranged in two separate areas with one side being a delightful sitting area and the other being a formal dining space.

Just off this space is a space for coats and shoes which in turn leads to the cloakroom with WC and basin.

The Living room at the centre of the house is really rather impressive. Bright and airy even on the gloomiest of days thanks to the large roof windows above the galleried landing. This is a wonderful room that works brilliantly well as a relaxing living room. A door from here leads into the kitchen.

The kitchen has been thought out and designed by the owners who have chosen the perfect finish for this property. It is clearly a high-quality kitchen that has been fitted and finished beautifully. The central island provides a lovely social space as well as useful additional work top space. There is a good size utility room off the kitchen which also houses the boiler and pressurised hot water cylinder. There is also a hatch which leads down into the useful cellar space.

The wonderful, galleried landing gives access to the bedrooms. The main bedroom is at the back of the building and has a beautiful shower room en suite and walk in wardrobe. There are two further double bedrooms, one with a bath en suite and the other with a shower en suite. The fourth room on the first floor was previously a bathroom but works brilliantly as a home office or fourth bedroom.

SELLER INSIGHT

We moved into Court House 7 years ago after falling in love with the history of Sandford Orleigh which has had many famous and varied occupants since its construction in 1832. The rebuild in 2001 gave a contemporary design to the interior of the property and the prospect of living in such a historic building with all the mod cons.

Despite being surrounded by other properties as soon as you enter the driveway into the estate you have a sense of space and privacy and isolation from the rest of Newton Abbot and this spacious feel continues throughout the house, with the roof windows providing a real ‘wow’ factor.

We were also attracted by the convenience of a 15-minute commute to our workplaces at Torquay and Ashburton. In fact, the location is perfect for our lifestyle as it gives us easy access to the coast, Dartmoor and Exeter city centre, and it is so easy to walk into the town of Newton Abbot or take a stroll into the open countryside.

We are very sad to be leaving and really wish we could pick up the property and relocate it but due to early retirement we have made the decision to move back to our hometown to be nearer our family. We sincerely hope the new occupants of Court House love it as much as we have.”*
