These cannot be treated with antibiotics so it’s best to make sure you’re stocked up with all the right remedies to get you on the mend! But generally they will recover in a few days after getting lots of rest, drinking plenty of fluids and using over-the-counter remedies such as paracetamol. Flu can be more serious if you have a long term health condition, such as heart and kidney disease, asthma or diabetes, even if it is well managed. Or if you are pregnant, or over 65, as you are at greater risk of severe complications if you catch flu. This is why it is so important that people in these groups have the free flu vaccine. Children and flu For children, flu can also be very unpleasant and some children can develop a very high fever or complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia so it is also important that they are vaccinated.
