Of those surveyed, 67 of the restaurants (62%) used some type of expandable polystyrene (more commonly known as Styrofoam) container. Polystyrene foam is a petroleum based byproduct that is frequently used for food packaging purposes. This material is currently non-recyclable and non-biodegradable. Because of its inability to decompose, polystyrene foam waste is consuming an ever- increasing amount of space within landfill facilities.
