Language of Instruction: English Contact Hours: 45 Recommended Credits: 3 TIME: TUES. 3:00-4.20 THURS. 3:00-4.20 COURSE DESCRIPTION This course provides you with an interactive experience of contemporary life in Italy, by exploring a range of defining features of this country and its people. In particular, you will observe and reflect on practices of identity formation, as these are expressed in class, gender, and community relations; political allegiance and conflict; cultural alignment or dissent; social solidarity and artistic innovation. You will actively and independently deploy the primary modes of sociological research to directly engage the host society: participant observation, interviews, and field-notes. These will provide opportunities to compare your own direct experiences with scholarly literature on contemporary Italy in an attempt to identify specific local expressions of broadly identified social patterns. This course is taught in English and requires no prior study of Italian language, but your direct engagement with Italian society will expose you to the Italian language in a variety of contexts, and you will be encouraged to extend and apply your developing language skills at whatever level they are. -

1 The Limits of Hospitality. Lampedusa, Local Perspectives and Undocumented Migration Paper presented at the Migration Working Group, EUI, Florence, 13.2.2008 First draft, do not quote without permission Heidrun Friese, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität, Frankfurt am Main and Europa Universität Viadrina, Frankfurt/Oder In queste mura non ci si sta che di passaggio. Qui la meta è partire Giuseppe Ungaretti Dans les civilisations sans bateaux les rêves se tarissent Michel Foucault Abstract Since the late 1990's the island of Lampedusa has become one of the European frontiers for 'irregular' migrants and asylum seekers and a powerful symbol for European policies that try to limit their entrance. Based on extensive anthropological fieldwork, the paper presents first insights of an ongoing multi- sited project on The Limits of Hospitality and envisions the various local actors and areas of conflicts that are articulated by the increasing arrival of undocumented migrants. Historically, hospitality has been a religious and ethical duty, a (sacred) demand of charity, generosity and responsibility. With the development of the modern nation-state, such duties have been inscribed into the procedures of organized, public solidarity and into the national and international legal system that order citizenship, (political) membership and the precarious status assigned to 'aliens' that shape, govern and limit the hospitable welcome of an Other. At the same time, concepts of hospitality gained an immense relevance for ongoing debates on migration, globalization and multiculturalism and are currently been discussed in philosophical debates on renewed forms of cosmopolitism, global justice and the rights of others which aim at troubling the conventional congruence of citizenship, territory and belonging. -

Of Blood Oranges and Golden Fruit: a Sacred Context for the “Rosarno Events”
Of Blood Oranges and Golden Fruit: A Sacred Context for the “Rosarno Events” Cristina Mazzoni What objects, places, or occasions awaken in me that mixture of fear and attachment, that ambiguous attitude caused by the approach of something simultaneously attractive and dangerous, prestigious and outcast—that combination of respect, desire, and terror that we take as the psychological sign of the sacred? Michel Leiris, “The Sacred in Everyday Life” (1938) The late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries have seen Italy transformed from a land of emigration, both internal and external, into a land of immigration. Some attention has been given in recent years to the tragic shipwrecks off the coast of the island of Lampedusa and the survivors’ traumatic entry into Italian territory. For those who do make it alive to this rocky Italian outpost, landing is just the beginning of a difficult journey that in some cases does not get much farther than Italy’s southern tip, with its ever-present need for underpaid farmhands. Thus, many African migrants find work in those citrus groves of Sicily and Calabria that, just a few decades ago, had employed the most desperate of Italians. The plight of the Italian orange pickers in the first half of the twentieth century was briefly and effectively captured in Elio Vittorini’s literary classic, Conversazione in Sicilia (1938-1939), where he writes: “Nessuno ne vuole… Nessuno ne vuole… Come se avessero il tossico… Maledette arance” (“No one wants them… No one wants them… As if they were poisoned… Damned oranges!”). 1 These are the last words the narrating protagonist hears from an orange picker he has just met on the ferry linking Sicily and Calabria. -

Planning Transport Interventions in Gioia Tauro, Italy
Urban and Maritime Transport XXVII 31 STRUCTURAL FACTORS FOR A THIRD-GENERATION PORT: PLANNING TRANSPORT INTERVENTIONS IN GIOIA TAURO, ITALY GIUSEPPE MUSOLINO1 & GIOVANNA CHILÀ2 1Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell’Informazione, delle Infrastrutture e dell’Energia Sostenibile, Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria, Italy 2Environment and Public Works, Municipality of Motta San Giovanni, Italy ABSTRACT Ports can be classified into different categories, or generations, according to the definitions of UNCTAD. Third-generation ports emerged in the last decades of the 20th century, principally due to world-wide large scale containerization and inter-modalism combined with the growing requirements of the international trade. Ports turned into integrated transport centres and logistic platforms for international trade. The aims of this paper are to: (a) analyse the current conditions of Gioia Tauro port, in the context of Calabria Region (Italy); (b) propose strategic development directions and transport interventions towards a third generation port. Scenario and planned interventions in the port of Gioia Tauro are identified in the Regional Transport Plan of Calabria and in the strategic report of the Integrated Logistic Area (ALI) of Gioia Tauro. The defined scenario aims to achieve the objectives to strength the existing transhipment activities and to support the development of new port-related activities in the hinterland area. The infrastructural interventions aim to connect the port with the European networks and the access to/from Calabria Region. The interventions concern both the expansion of the port infrastructures, on the sea-side; and the increase of the railway and road infrastructures, on the land-side. Keywords: third generation port, general logistics, infrastructures, Gioia Tauro port area.
