Title: Shatkarma

Meaning of Shatkarma Shat (a word) is a numeric term which means ‘Six’ and Karma means ‘action/procedure’ .

A combination of six types of actions, which are done primarily for purification process and cleansing practices of specific bodily organs in yog.

Should be practiced under the guidance of experts.

Hath Yog and Ayurveda: All diseases occur due to the imbalance of tri-dosha i.e.. . Vata (air element) , Pitta (fire element) and Kapha (earth element) .

Hath Yog recommends Shat Karma to avoid medicines.

Shat Karma balances all the five elements i.e.. air, fire, earth, water and space of our body.

Higher levels of Yog like , , Dharna and Dhyan can be performed.

Creates harmony between two major Pranic flows Ida (via left nostril) and Pingala Nadi (via right nostril) .

Helps to open the entry point of Sushumna Nadi- a gateway of Shakti-the ultimate aim of Hath Yog.

Various Components of Shat Karma Shatkarma can be defined as the purification process of the body in the context of Yog.

Dhauti First procedure described in Shatkarma.

Dhauti is a Sanskrit word means ‘Washing or cleaning’ .

In Gheranda a Samhita Antardhauti, Dantadhauti, Hriddhauti and Moolashodhana are the four types of Dhauti.

Pradeepika Vastra Dhauti and Gajkarni are mentioned under the Dhauti Karma.

Vaman Dhauti (Kunjal) Vaman Dhauti is commonly known as Kunjal.

Mouth, food pipe and stomach are cleaned.

The practice should be done in the early morning with empty stomach.

Hands should be cleaned, and the nails should be cut before Kunjal.

One should keep the jug and glass near to oneself.

Saindha Namak (rock salt) should be mixed into lukewarm warm.

One should eat Khichadi with ghee after Kunjal .

One shouldn՚t use chilly-spices on the day of completion of Kunjal Kriya.

Method Sitting in Kagasana.

Until the feel of vomiting starts one should drink lukewarm saline water continuously.

One should stand up and bend forward from the waist.

Open the mouth and start rubbing root of the tongue by three fingers of the right hand.

After a long time, practice, vomit starts without putting fingers at the root of the tongue.

This kriya should be done once a week.

Benefits Kunjal Kriya is extremely useful for maintaining the health of a healthy person.

Acidity of the stomach needs to be cleared.

Asthma patients get relief from its practice.

Removes the foul smell of the breath and the phlegm of the throat.

Precautions Persons suffering from hypertension, stomach ulcers and cardiovascular diseases shouldn՚t be practicing it.

Basti Kriya Means the ‘Enema’ i.e.. cleansing of intestines through anal route.

Yogis stand in the river or the pond at the level of navel in ancient times.

The water is removed from the anus once the water is pulled into the intestines.

Modern Enema A refined form of this ancient Kriya.

‘Enema’ apparatus are being used instead of performing the Basti Kriya in the river.

Lemon water or salt water is allowed to enter inside the intestines through an enema apparatus.

Person suffering from constipation gets benefit immediately by giving enema.

Body can be kept healthy by periodically taking an enema.

Neti Kriya Cleaning of the nose and its surrounding area is called .

It also improves eyesight and helps in treating nose disorders.

Jal Neti Method Sitting in Kagasana.

Take lukewarm saline water in the Neti pot.

Putting the cone of Neti pot into the left nostril and keeping the right nostril slightly downwards.

Taking breath from the mouth by keeping the mouth open.

The water starts coming out from the right nostril.

Phlegm/mucus comes out along with the water.

Kapalabhati should be performed immediately after Jal Neti so that the water coming out of the nostrils get fully opened.

Jal Neti is performed only in the morning with empty stomach.

Jal Neti Should always be performed in the morning with empty stomach.

The nasal tract problems are removed for e. g. running nose, cough, etc.
