Let’s face it—it’s hard and Editor at Large gray and the industry has done little to try to change that impression. Sure, those of us in [email protected] the industry recognize its literal and figurative strengths and long life cycle and use that to Twitter: @wmpalmer refute negative reports about the carbon footprint and other environmental impacts. But in February, The Guardian, an influential online media company, declared concrete week and started it off with an article titled “Concrete: the most destructive material on Earth.” (https://bit.ly/2GJDut5) Follow-up articles blamed concrete for everything that’s wrong with modern society from cancer to depression to crime. The industry responded by point- ing out the incredible benefits concrete provides to modern civilization. But we who know concrete best should take the time to understand the objections to its use and then we can make a reasoned response. Concrete is beautiful and completely irreplaceable and con- tributes immensely to improving life on the planet. We’re not going to take The Guardian’s advice and start building with recycled tires and bamboo but we do need to make a serious effort to reduce concrete’s impact by minimizing cement consumption where possible and simply continuing to be the good neighbors we are today. Workforce Woes Everyone seems to worry about the quality and quantity of today’s construction labor force. The Associated General Contractors reported in January that “despite firms’ plans to expand headcount, 78 percent report they are having a hard time filling salaried and hourly craft positions.” But one group that is doing something to fight back is the American Concrete Pumping Association (ACPA) with a new video called A Day in the Life of a Concrete Pump Operator. “Our new Day in the Life video will enhance our recruiting efforts by giving viewers a visual representation of real-world pumping experiences,” says ACPA Executive Director Christi Collins. (https://youtu.be/9ErMNreMGFE) Construction Robotics Construction is full of tasks that are repetitive, dif- ficult, and dangerous: drilling anchor bolts, tying re- bar, breaking up old concrete. So if there was a way to have a machine do those things with no human supervision that would begin to address the shortage of workers and save the bodies of current work- ers, not to mention saving money and increasing productivity. The good news is that some of that is beginning to happen; the bad news is that it is hap- pening slowly. I recently reviewed the current state of robotics in a Building Forward piece. A lot of it is ac- tually more robotic-augmented than autonomous— things like remotely controlled demolition robots or exoskeletons. Take a look at some of the robotic tools I found by going to https://bit.ly/2HKjLKc. • The Winners: at the Tools the Same Way Again
Best 2008 New tools efore I started working at this magazine, I saw tools as things that Bcame in boxes. But during the last 12 years, my view has changed. I now see tools as triumphs of marketing, engineering or both. After you meet the people who make and sell your tools, you never look The Winners: at the tools the same way again. I know the guy who designed my jack plane, and the man who came up with the idea for SawStop. Because we Bosch know these people, you might think that we cut them a lot of slack when Bridge City Tools selecting the winners of our Best New Tools award each year. Nope. Today we wrapped up our selection process, and we spent most Byrd Tool of that time ripping apart the candidates, exploring what we didn’t like Colt about them. It’s a bit like telling your spouse that you don’t like the way she gets her hair cut. But we have to do this. Not only for you, but for the Delta engineers and marketing people who conceive of these tools, figure out Festool how to make them and successfully bring them to market. We owe it to these people to select the tools that are like nothing that Gramercy anyone has ever made (such as the Jointmaker Pro). Or tools that have Jet innovative features that revive an established form (such as the new Festool router). Or tools that take an old idea and use it to make a new Makita tool that works better than we could have imagined (such as the Veritas Powermatic skew rabbet planes and the Bosch jigsaw blades).
