Marine Biodiversity (2020) 50:98 https://doi.org/10.1007/s12526-020-01113-4 REVIEW A review of Southern Ocean squids using nets and beaks Yves Cherel1 Received: 31 May 2020 /Revised: 31 August 2020 /Accepted: 3 September 2020 # Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung 2020 Abstract This review presents an innovative approach to investigate the teuthofauna from the Southern Ocean by combining two com- plementary data sets, the literature on cephalopod taxonomy and biogeography, together with predator dietary investigations. Sixty squids were recorded south of the Subtropical Front, including one circumpolar Antarctic (Psychroteuthis glacialis Thiele, 1920), 13 circumpolar Southern Ocean, 20 circumpolar subantarctic, eight regional subantarctic, and 12 occasional subantarctic species. A critical evaluation removed five species from the list, and one species has an unknown taxonomic status. The 42 Southern Ocean squids belong to three large taxonomic units, bathyteuthoids (n = 1 species), myopsids (n =1),andoegopsids (n = 40). A high level of endemism (21 species, 50%, all oegopsids) characterizes the Southern Ocean teuthofauna. Seventeen families of oegopsids are represented, with three dominating families, onychoteuthids (seven species, five endemics), ommastrephids (six species, three endemics), and cranchiids (five species, three endemics). Recent improvements in beak identification and taxonomy allowed making new correspondence between beak and species names, such as Galiteuthis suhmi (Hoyle 1886), Liguriella podophtalma Issel, 1908, and the recently described Taonius notalia Evans, in prep. Gonatus phoebetriae beaks were synonymized with those of Gonatopsis octopedatus Sasaki, 1920, thus increasing significantly the number of records and detailing the circumpolar distribution of this rarely caught Southern Ocean squid. The review extends considerably the number of species, including endemics, recorded from the Southern Ocean, but it also highlights that the corresponding species to two well-described beaks (Moroteuthopsis sp. -

BULLETIN OF MARINE SCIENCE, 49(1-2): 270-279, 1991 SEXUAL MATURATION AND REPRODUCTIVE CYCLE OF ELEDONE MASSYAE, VOSS 1964 (CEPHALOPODA: OCTOPODIDAE) IN SOUTHERN BRAZIL Jose Angel Alvarez Perez and Manuel Haimovici ABSTRACT E/edone massyae is a small benthic octopus found along Argentina and Southern Brazil. Maturation and reproductive cycle were studied based on 226 females and III males that were caught at different times of the year with trawl nets on the shelf and upper slope off Rio Grande do Sui, between 3D· and 34OS. Females started to mature in the spring and attained advanced stages in the summer at a wide range of sizes. Neither fully mature nor spent females were found. Spawning is likely to take place during late summer on rough bottoms, at some distance from the trawling areas. Spermatangia were found within the ovary of maturing females mainly in spring. Fecundity ranged from 27 to 126, with a mean of 79, and was not influenced by female body size. Male maturation started in autumn at smaller body sizes than in females. Spermatophores were found in the spermatophoric sac from the end of autumn onwards, and the most advanced gonadal stages occurred in January. Mating seems to occur principally in spring. Eledone massyae is a small octopod with a known distribution ranging from southern Argentina to Rio de Janeiro (Voss, 1964). The species was first recorded in Brazilian waters by Massy (1916) as Moschites brevis Massy, 1916, then re- described as Eledone massyae by Voss (1964). In southern Brazil, this species was caught in bottom trawls on the continental shelf and upper slope between 40 and 350 m {Haimovici and Andriguetto, 1986; Perez and Haimovici, MS)I, frequently together with a congeneric species Eledone gaucha Haimovici, 1988. -

All rights reserved Aspects of the Natural History of Pelagic Cephalopods of the Hawaiian Mesopelagic-Boundary Region 1 RICHARD EDWARD YOUNG 2 ABSTRACT: Pelagic cephalopods of the mesopelagic-boundary region in Hawai'i have proven difficult to sample but seem to occupy a variety ofhabitats within this zone. Abralia trigonura Berry inhabits the zone only as adults; A. astrosticta Berry may inhabit the inner boundary zone, and Pterygioteuthis giardi Fischer appears to be a facultative inhabitant. Three other mesopelagic species, Liocranchia reinhardti (Steenstrup), Chiroteuthis imperator Chun, and Iridoteuthis iris (Berry), are probable inhabitants; the latter two are suspected to be nonvertical migrants. The mesopelagic-boundary region also contains a variety of other pelagic cephalopods. Some are transients, common species of the mesopelagic zone in offshore waters such as Abraliopsis spp., neritic species such as Euprymna scolopes Berry, and oceanic epipelagic species such as Tremoctopus violaceus Chiaie and Argonauta argo Linnaeus. Others are appar ently permanent but either epipelagic (Onychoteuthis sp. C) or demersal (No totodarus hawaiiensis [Berry] and Haliphron atlanticus Steenstrup). Submersible observations show that Nototodarus hawaiiensis commonly "sits" on the bot tom and Haliphron atlanticus broods its young in the manner of some pelagic octopods. To date, no information is available on the diet of sperm whales in the Gulf. This study sheds light into the feeding habits ofthese whales by examining data collected from free-ranging and stranded animals. Prey species included a minimum of 13 species within 10 families of cephalopods, the only prey type observed. The most important prey was Histioteuthis, a midwater squid important in the diet of sperm whales worldwide. Most species of cephalopods consumed by Gulf sperm whales are meso to bathypelagic in distribution, being found in surface to waters 2,500 deep. Some of these prey are also vertical migrators. The diet of Gulf sperm whales does not include species targeted by the commercial fisheries. INTRODUCTION Until fairly recently, little was known about the species of whales and dolphins (cetaceans) inhabiting the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Most of the information available came from opportunistic sightings and occasional strandings. In the early 1990' s large-scale dedicated surveys were initiated to study the distribution and abundance of marine mammals in the deep Gulf. -

Caldwell, Chair Autotomy is the shedding of a body part as a means of secondary defense against a predator that has already made contact with the organism. This defense mechanism has been widely studied in a few model taxa, specifically lizards, a few groups of arthropods, and some echinoderms. All of these model organisms have a hard endo- or exo-skeleton surrounding the autotomized body part. There are several animals that are capable of autotomizing a limb but do not exhibit the same biological trends that these model organisms have in common. As a result, the mechanisms that underlie autotomy in the hard-bodied animals may not apply for soft bodied organisms. A behavioral ecology approach was used to study arm autotomy in the octopus, Abdopus aculeatus. Investigations concentrated on understanding the mechanistic underpinnings and adaptive value of autotomy in this soft-bodied animal. A. aculeatus was observed in the field on Mactan Island, Philippines in the dry and wet seasons, and compared with populations previously studied in Indonesia. -

Diversity of Cephalopoda from the Waters Around Taiwan

(1998) 331 DIVERSITY OF CEPHALOPODA FROM THE WATERS AROUND TAIWAN C.C.Lu Department ofZoology, National Chung Hsing University, Taichung, Taiwan ABSTRACT Based on a new collection of cephalopods made during the period January 1995 to date, the list of cephalopods known to occur in Taiwanese waters, including the Taiwan Strait, has increased from 32 species to 64 species, belonging to 28 genera, 14 families, including sev eral species of sepiids and octopods new to science. The most speciose families are the family Sepiidae with 15 species, Loliginidae with 7 species, and Octopodidae with 22 spe cies.The fauna is largely in common with that of the neighbouring areas ofthe East China Sea and the South China Sea. When comparing the present result with previous reports, it is evident that the proportion of newly recorded taxa is large. At least 30 out ofthe 64 valid taxa reported are new records (46.9 %) and only 33 out of 63 nominal species previously reported are valid (52.4 %). As the present study is still in its early phase, it is expected that more taxa will be found when more habitats are sampled. Evidently our current knowl edge of cephalopod fauna of the area does not reflect the true diversity. Reasons for this disparity are examined. Using Taiwan as an example, recommendations are made to im prove our knowledge of the cephalopod fauna of the TMMP (Tropical Marine Mollusc Pro gramme) area. INTRODUCTION In China and Taiwan, cephalopods are tra in 19 genera belonging to nine families from ditionally used and prized as food items with Taiwanese waters. -

Vertical distribution and migration patterns (both diel and ontogenic) are not known for the majority of deep-water cephalopods. These varying patterns are of interest as they have the potential to contribute to the movement of large amounts of nutrients and contaminants through the water column during diel migrations. This can be of particular importance if the migration traverses a discrete layer with particular properties, as happened with the deep-water oil plume located between 1000 and 1400 m during the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill.
