En total, achéganse nomes galegos para 534 especies de moluscos. A estrutura En primeiro lugar preséntase unha clasificación taxonómica que considera as clases, ordes, superfamilias e familias de moluscos. Aquí apúntase, de maneira xeral, os nomes dos moluscos que hai en cada familia. A seguir vén o corpo do documento, onde se indica, especie por especie, alén do nome científico, os nomes galegos e ingleses de cada molusco (nalgún caso, tamén, o nome xenérico para un grupo deles). Ao final inclúese unha listaxe de referencias bibliográficas que foron utilizadas para a elaboración do presente documento. Nalgunhas desas referencias recolléronse ou propuxéronse nomes galegos para os moluscos, quer xenéricos quer específicos. Outras referencias achegan nomes para os moluscos noutras linguas, que tamén foron tidos en conta. Alén diso, inclúense algunhas fontes básicas a respecto da metodoloxía e dos criterios terminolóxicos empregados. 2 Tratamento terminolóxico De modo moi resumido, traballouse nas seguintes liñas e cos seguintes criterios: En primeiro lugar, aprofundouse no acervo lingüístico galego. A respecto dos nomes dos moluscos, a lingua galega é riquísima e dispomos dunha chea de nomes, tanto específicos (que designan un único animal) como xenéricos (que designan varios animais parecidos). -

All rights reserved Aspects of the Natural History of Pelagic Cephalopods of the Hawaiian Mesopelagic-Boundary Region 1 RICHARD EDWARD YOUNG 2 ABSTRACT: Pelagic cephalopods of the mesopelagic-boundary region in Hawai'i have proven difficult to sample but seem to occupy a variety ofhabitats within this zone. Abralia trigonura Berry inhabits the zone only as adults; A. astrosticta Berry may inhabit the inner boundary zone, and Pterygioteuthis giardi Fischer appears to be a facultative inhabitant. Three other mesopelagic species, Liocranchia reinhardti (Steenstrup), Chiroteuthis imperator Chun, and Iridoteuthis iris (Berry), are probable inhabitants; the latter two are suspected to be nonvertical migrants. The mesopelagic-boundary region also contains a variety of other pelagic cephalopods. Some are transients, common species of the mesopelagic zone in offshore waters such as Abraliopsis spp., neritic species such as Euprymna scolopes Berry, and oceanic epipelagic species such as Tremoctopus violaceus Chiaie and Argonauta argo Linnaeus. Others are appar ently permanent but either epipelagic (Onychoteuthis sp. C) or demersal (No totodarus hawaiiensis [Berry] and Haliphron atlanticus Steenstrup). Submersible observations show that Nototodarus hawaiiensis commonly "sits" on the bot tom and Haliphron atlanticus broods its young in the manner of some pelagic octopods. Arms III in both sexes stout and strongly curved inward, more obviously so in males. Suckers in ventral series of right arm I and arms II of males larger than dorsal suckers. Hectocotylus present, left dorsal arm modified: proximal end with 2 slender fleshy papillae (anteriormost papilla longest) and dorsolateral to these a blunt tongue-like lobe, all formed from enlarged and elongate sucker pedicels; 2 rows of suckers on arm proximal to fleshy pad; distal end of hectocotylized arm with sucker pedicels enlarged and tightly packed to form 2 double rows of columnar structures; suckers reduced with tiny, fleshy, slit-like openings. Club with 4 large suckers in transverse rows; suckers differ in size; dorsal marginal longitudinal series of suckers larger than those in ventral marginal series. The aims of this research to identification of shell morphological characters of paper Nautiluses were collected at 1,000 m depth. The results showed that out of all the samples successfully collected during the course of the study (March till December 2016), only 6 specimens were found at 70-80 depth, with 4 of those species are egg-laying, and the other 2 are not. From the 6 species found, 2 were Argonauta argo with average shell length of 34.05 mm, shell width of 22.20 mm, and average aperture width of 11.15 mm. A. argo is known to possess 8 tentacles, 4 long and 2 short appendages. The shell color is brighter than that of A. hians, with flatter shell and two strips of keels located near each other along the dorsal and soft side, along ventral side thickens and sharpens. A. hians possess average shell length of 47.02 mm, shell width of 33.07 mm and aperture width of 21.30 mm. -

Tropical cuttlefish a model organism to study travelling waves in biological systems 4 August 2014 several millions of them. The size of each chromatophore can be rapidly and individually altered by neural activation of radial muscles. If those muscles relax, their chromatophore shrinks. If they contract, the chromatophore grows larger. One form of cephalopod pigmentation pattern is the passing cloud – a dark band that travels across the body of the animal. It can be superimposed on various static body patterns and textures. The passing cloud results from the coordinated activation of chromatophore arrays to generate one, or as in the present case, several simultaneous traveling waves of pigmentation. Donskoj Str. 5, Kaliningrad, 236000 Russia [tel. +0112-225885, fax + 0112-219997, e-mail: [email protected]] ABSTRACT 21 species of the nektonic squids family Ommastrephidae inhabits almost the entire waters of the World Ocean. It is the most commercial important group among cephalopods. Straight and expert evaluations of biomass were carried out for each species. In all ommastrephids the total instantaneous biomass is ~55 million t on average and total yearly production is ~ 400 million t (production/biomass coefficient - P/B = 5 in inshore species and 8 - in oceanic ones). Now there are 12-fished species, mainly 8 inshore ones. In 1984-2001 the yearly world catch of ommastrephids was about 1.5-2.2 million t (=50-65% of total cephalopod catch). The feasible ommastrephids fishery potential is ~ 6-9 million t including 4-7 million t of oceanic species. Thus ommastrephids are one of the most important resources for increasing high-quality food protein catch in the World Ocean. At the same time there are serious economical and technical difficulties to develop oceanic resources fishery, especially for Ommastrephes and Sthenoteuthis. A general obstacle in the real fishery operations and fishery forecasting for ommastrephids is their r-strategist ecological traits, related to monocyclia, short one-year life cycle, pelagic egg masses, paralarvae and fry, and accordingly high mortality rate during two last ontogenetic stages. -

NMFS is also charged with the development and implemen tation of policies for managing national fishing grounds, development and enforcement of domestic fisheries regulations, surveillance of foreign fishing off United States coastal waters, and the development and enforcement of international fishery agreements and policies. NMFS also assists the fishing industry through marketing service and economic analysis programs, and mortgage insurance and vessel construction subsidies. It collects, analyzes, and publishes statistics on various phases of the industry. The NOAA Technical Report NMFS series was established in 1983 to replace two subcategories of the Technical Reports series: "Special Scientific Report-Fisheries" and "Circular." Rehder Research Curator, Division of Mollusks Introduction An outstanding patroness of the arts and sciences in eighteenth- century England was Lady Margaret Cavendish Bentinck, Duchess of Portland, wife of William, Second Duke of Portland. At Bulstrode in Buckinghamshire, magnificent summer residence of the Dukes of Portland, and in her London house in Whitehall, Lady Margaret— widow for the last 23 years of her life— entertained gentlemen in- terested in her extensive collection of natural history and objets d'art. Among these visitors were Sir Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander, pupil of Linnaeus. As her own particular interest was in conchology, she received from both of these men many specimens of shells gathered on Captain Cook's voyages. Apparently Solander spent considerable time working on the conchological collection, for his manuscript on descriptions of new shells was based largely on the "Portland Museum." When Lady Margaret died in 1785, her "Museum" was sold at auction. The task of preparing the collection for sale and compiling the sales catalogue fell to the Reverend John Lightfoot (1735-1788). For many years librarian and chaplain to the Duchess and scientif- 1 2 PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM vol. 121 ically inclined with a special leaning toward botany and conchology, he was well acquainted with the collection. It is not surprising he went to considerable trouble to give names and figure references to so many of the mollusks and other invertebrates that he listed. -

SEAFDEC in Vietnamese waters during 21 April- 5 June 1999, as part of SEAFDEC’s collaborative research survey on the fisheries resources of the South China Sea Area IV (Vietnamese waters) with focus on tuna, oceanic squid and other highly migratory species. Squid fishing activities were conducted in 10 stations, ranging in the depth from 600-4000 m, using four automatic jigging machines at night. The purpleback flying squid, Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis (Lesson, 1830) was the only species caught throughout the fishing area. Diagnosis and distribution of the species in the study area are reported. This analysis was performed using a robust molecular phylogeny with three mitochondrial genes (COI, CYTB and 16S) and two nuclear genes (RHO and 18S) for nearly all species of ommastrephid squid. Our results support dividing the Ommastrephidae into the three traditional subfamilies, plus the monotypic subfamily Todaropsinae as proposed previously.
