    Josemaría Escrivá and controversy, both within the Catholic Church and in the worldwide press.[8][9] Several independent jour- nalists who have investigated the history of Opus Dei, among them Vatican analyst John L. East- ern and Western Christians live amidst the same secularism, consumerist materialism and other negative influences. On the other hand, one can perceive the hunger of many for spirituality, care for the poor, a rejection of racism and other forms of hatred and injustice. Among the especially positive phenomena one can no- tice: the creation of hierarchies for Eastern Catholics in the “New World”, financial and other types of assistance from Roman Catholics for the often poorer Eastern Christians, a raising of the level of scholarship in the field of Eastern Christian Studies, the creation of the Committee on the Rela- tionship between Eastern and Latin Catholic Churches at the NCCB, the establishment of Eastern Catholic Associates (which brings together all Eastern Catholic hierarchs of the U.S.A.) and the publication of certain much-needed docu- ments. Still, there are some issues which require further work. Much progress will be made when all Roman Catholic semi- naries educate their students adequately about the Eastern Churches. 166 Bishop Basil (Schott) The lived experience of the Eastern Catholic Churches in North America began in the early 1880’s with immigrations from Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

    Colleagues celebrate career of Fr. Richard McBrien To the dismay of the right and pleasure of the rest, theologian Fr. Richard McBrien has popularized Vatican II theology more than any other person. After 45 years of his award-winning weekly column (2,364 in all) titled “Essays in Theology”; after 20 books, including Catholicism, originally a two-volume synthesis of Catholic theology; after serving as president of the Catholic Theological Society of America and after being the recipient of its highest honor, the John Courtney Murray Award; after countless papers and speeches; after all this and more, McBrien was honored April 27 at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, where he has taught for 30 years. “No Catholic theologian in the United States has made a larger contribution to the reception of Vatican II than Richard P. McBrien,” said Catholic theologian Fr. Charles E. Curran, Elizabeth Scurlock University Professor of Human Values at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and a longtime McBrien colleague and friend. “McBrien has made this contribution by carrying out to the nth degree his role as a Catholic theologian.” Curran was a featured speaker at the Notre Dame McBrien symposium, whose honorary chair is former university president Holy Cross Fr. Theodore Hesburgh. It was Hesburgh who in 1980 invited McBrien to come from Boston College to chair Notre Dame’s theology department. McBrien was chair for 11 years, until 1991. Curran is not alone in his effusive praise for McBrien and his contributions to theology. According to John Thiel, president of Catholic Theological Society of America and professor of religious studies at Fairfield University in Connecticut, “McBrien is the theologian who has done the most in the American church to teach the continuing heritage of the Second Vatican Council.

But the Prince of Evil, that spiritual enemy of man's salvation, as formerly in Eden, craftily assuming the pretext of profitable counsel, he made man to become a transgressor of the divinely-spoken command.

It is not about whether people have a right to abortion-inducing products, sterilization, and contraception. Those products and services are widely available in the United States, and nothing prevents the Government itself from making them more widely available. On Monday last an election for municipal officers took place in this city, which resulted in the success of the Democratic-convention nominations, with only a few exceptions. Not only throughout the State of Ohio has the excitement attending this election been known, but papers at the most distant points of the country, have indulged on commentaries in no way complimentary to the Catholics. Now be it known to all to whom these presents shall come, that all the Catholics did was to petition the legislature to amend the school laws, so that Catholic children could attend the schools without sacrifice of the rights of conscience!! This was all our guilt, and we have been repaid by such a deluge of Protestant abuse, misrepresentations and calumny, that we firmly believe the like was never known before in the United States. Editors, preachers, fanatics, loafers, panacea vendors, and quack doctors kept up an assault of such a universal character, that all sorts of style were used at once, all sorts of filth projected against us, all sorts of lies invented, all sorts of insults heaped upon our heads, until it seemed as if the Devil himself was for once exhausted and malignity could do no more. The election day came and the authors of all this insane bigotry and abuse were swept like dust before the power of he people. 392.
