Professor Madhav Deshpande, my advisor, taught me the dharma of being a Sanskrit scholar. He showed me the world of Sanskrit, inspired me to experience the depth of each line of text, and taught me to appreciate its beauty. Professor Donald Lopez taught me the dharma of professionalism. He guided me to face the real problem and to take the right path. Most importantly, they both demonstrated to me what it means to be a scholar with the manner in which they live their everyday lives. This dissertation is mainly a product of my encounter with these two masters. Professor Benjamin Brose was a key source of encouragement during the difficult times. His seminar on Modern Chinese Buddhism planted a seed of a grand-scale project in me; I hope this seed will bear fruit in the future. Professor Thomas Trautmann generously agreed to serve on my Committee during his retirement and spared no effort in sharing his thoughtful comments up until the completion of this project. My trip to China in 2011 had a significant impact on this dissertation. Thought- provoking seminars with Professor Saerji, Professor Shaoyong Ye, Professor Gyu Eon Jang, and other graduate students at Peking University deepened my interest in the Madhyamakahṛdayakārikā and the Tarkajvālā. Professor Akira Saito generously provided me with copies of his articles on Bhāviveka. Professor Huanhuan He showed me an incomparable spirit of fellowship by sharing her database on Bhāviveka; I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to her. Professor Harunaga Isaacson and Professor Kashinath Nyaupane reinvigorated my enthusiasm for Sanskrit during the Sanskrit retreat at Baofeng Buddhist temple. Their passion for Sanskrit left an indelible imprint on my mind. I also thank the venerable monks at the temple for having hosted such an extraordinary event and for having made the rich resources of the iii temple available to its participants. My former teachers and friends in Korea were also great sources of support during my study abroad. Professor Sungtaek Cho is responsible for laying the foundation for my knowledge of Buddhism. He tamed the “rebellious” parts of me, trained me as a graduate student with his characteristic open mind, and put me back on track whenever I went astray. PREFACE The Qur‘an is a book which emphasizes ‘deed‘ rather than ‘idea‘. There are, however, men to whom it is not possible organically to assimilate an alien universe by re-living, as a vital process, that special type of inner experience on which religious faith ultimately rests. Moreover, the modern man, by developing habits of concrete thought - habits which Islam itself fostered at least in the earlier stages of its cultural career - has rendered himself less capable of that experience which he further suspects because of its liability to illusion. The more genuine schools of Sufism have, no doubt, done good work in shaping and directing the evolution of religious experience in Islam; but their latter-day representatives, owing to their ignorance of the modern mind, have become absolutely incapable of receiving any fresh inspiration from modern thought and experience. They are perpetuating methods which were created for generations possessing a cultural outlook differing, in important respects, from our own. ‘Your creation and resurrection,‘ says the Qur‘an, ‘are like the creation and resurrection of a single soul.‘ A living experience of the kind of biological unity, embodied in this verse, requires today a method physiologically less violent and psychologically more suitable to a concrete type of mind.

    Bhāvaviveka’s Critique of the Theory of Three Natures遍依圓三性in Karatalaratna 《掌珍論》 . Kaspars Eihmanis PhD student, National Chengchi University, Faculty of Philosophy 1. Introduction. Mou Zongsan 牟宗三 in his lectures on the philosophy of Daodejing,1 interprets the first line of the first chapter “道可道,非常道” as introducing the notion of two truths. The permanent dao and the impermanent dao, as Mou contends, belong to the universal tendency found in various traditions of philosophy, both European and Asian that tends to distinguish two layers of truth in its attempt to understand the world. This twofold view of truth is recognizable in Plato’s two-world theory: the bifurcation of the world into sensible and intelligible, with the following introduction of the dichotomies of truth and opinion, reality and appearance etc. Kant’s distinction between noumena and phenomena is another example of the two- truth theory, although Mou contends, that such a reading is not without problems: things in themselves are not directly knowable. The source of this highly idiosyncratic reading of Laozi comes from Mou’s application of the theory of two truths found in his application of the notion “one mind opens two gates” ⼀⼼開⼆⾨, borrowed from the Awakening of Faith in Mahāyāna 《⼤乘起信論》(“Mahāyāna Śraddhotpāda Śāstra”). Awakening of Faith is one of the most influential texts in the Far East Mahāyāna Buddhist tradition, which introduces a type of Yogācāra and Tathāgatagarbha synthesis. Leaving aside the questions of the authenticity of the text (Indian original vs. Chinese Apocrypha) and the authorship (Aśvaghoṣa vs. Paramārtha),2 what seems to be important, at least for Mou Zongsan, is the fact that the notion of the two the aspects of the mind ⼆⾨ that are found in the Awakening of Faith as the “thusness aspect of the mind” ⼼真如⾨ 1 Mou Zongsan 牟宗三, “Laozi Daodejing yanjianglu”⽼⼦《道德經》講演錄 (Lectures on Laozi’s “Daodejing”).

    Ancient Punjab – Volume 4, 2016-2017 1 GANDHARAN ORIGIN OF THE AMIDA BUDDHA IMAGE Katsumi Tanabe ABSTRACT The most famous Buddha of Mahāyāna Pure Land Buddhism is the Amida (Amitabha/Amitayus) Buddha that has been worshipped as great savior Buddha especially by Japanese Pure Land Buddhists (Jyodoshu and Jyodoshinshu schools). Quite different from other Mahāyāna celestial and non-historical Buddhas, the Amida Buddha has exceptionally two names or epithets: Amitābha alias Amitāyus. Amitābha means in Sanskrit ‘Infinite light’ while Amitāyus ‘Infinite life’. One of the problems concerning the Amida Buddha is why only this Buddha has two names or epithets. This anomaly is, as we shall see below, very important for solving the origin of the Amida Buddha. Keywords: Amida, Śākyamuni, Buddha, Mahāyāna, Buddhist, Gandhara, In Japan there remain many old paintings of the Amida Triad or Trinity: the Amida Buddha flanked by the two bodhisattvas Avalokiteśvara and Mahāsthāmaprāpta (Fig.1). The function of Avalokiteśvara is compassion while that of Mahāsthāmaprāpta is wisdom. Both of them help the Amida Buddha to save the lives of sentient beings. Therefore, most of such paintings as the Amida Triad feature their visiting a dying Buddhist and attempting to carry the soul of the dead to the AmidaParadise (Sukhāvatī) (cf. Tangut paintings of 12-13 centuries CE from Khara-khoto, The State Hermitage Museum 2008: 324-327, pls. 221-224). Thus, the Amida Buddha and the two regular attendant bodhisattvas became quite popular among Japanese Buddhists and paintings. However, the origin of this Triad and also the Amida Buddha himself is not clarified as yet in spite of many previous studies dedicated to the Amida Buddha, the Amida Triad, and the two regular attendant bodhisattvas (Higuchi 1950; Huntington 1980; Brough 1982; Quagliotti 1996; Salomon/Schopen 2002; Harrison/Lutczanits 2012; Miyaji 2008; Rhi 2003, 2006).

    Avalokiteśvara and Brahmā’s Entreaty Akira Saito Preamble As is well known, Avalokiteśvara is a bodhisattva representative of Mahāyāna Buddhism, and beliefs in Avalokiteśvara have flourished wherever Buddhism, especially Mahāyāna Buddhism, spread in Asia. Partly because the characteristic of assuming various forms to save people in distress was attributed to Avalokiteśvara, there evolved six, seven, and thirty-three forms of Avalokiteśvara, who also amalgamated with earth goddesses such as Niangniang 娘娘, and in Japan pilgrimages to sites sacred to Avalokiteśvara have been long established among the general populace, typical of which is the pilgrimage to thirty-three temples in the Kansai region (Saigoku sanjūsansho 西國三十三所). There exists much prior research on Avalokiteśvara, who was accepted in various forms in many regions to which Buddhism spread, and on his iconography, concrete representation, and cult. But on the other hand it is also true that there remains much that is puzzling about the name “Avalokiteśvara” and its meaning, origins, and background. In the following, having first provided a critical overview of recent relevant research, I wish to reconsider the meaning and background of his original name (avalokita-īśvara, -svara, -smara, etc.) in relation to the story of Brahmā’s entreaty, a perspective that has been largely missing in past research. 1. Best wishes on Diwali and New year". DIWALI IN JAIN MYTHOLOGY Diwali is an important Hindu festival although it is observed by the Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists as well. Referred to as the “festival of lights,” Diwali marks the triumph of good over evil, and the lighting up of lamps is a custom that stands for celebration and optimism for mankind. Lights and lamps, specifically conventional diyas are an important aspect of Diwali celebrations. Fireworks are connected with the festival almost in every region of India. Diwali is of great significance in Jainism since on this day Lord Mahavira, the last of the jain Tirthankaras, achieved nirvana at Pavapuri. As per Jain custom, the principal follower of Mahavira, Ganadhar Gautam Swami, as well achieved absolute wisdom on this same day. Diwali is originally stated in Jain books as the date of the nirvana of Lord Mahavira. The earliest use of the word Diwalior Dipavali appears in Harivamsha Purana composed by Acharya Jinasena, written in Shaka Samvat 705. How is Jain Diwali Different from Hindu Diwali? The manner in which Jains commemorate Diwali differs in several ways from the one celebrated by the Hindus.
