  • A Dark New World : Anatomy of Australian Horror Films
A dark new world: Anatomy of Australian horror films Mark David Ryan Faculty of Creative Industries, Queensland University of Technology A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the degree Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), December 2008 The Films (from top left to right): Undead (2003); Cut (2000); Wolf Creek (2005); Rogue (2007); Storm Warning (2006); Black Water (2007); Demons Among Us (2006); Gabriel (2007); Feed (2005). ii KEY WORDS Australian horror films; horror films; horror genre; movie genres; globalisation of film production; internationalisation; Australian film industry; independent film; fan culture iii ABSTRACT After experimental beginnings in the 1970s, a commercial push in the 1980s, and an underground existence in the 1990s, from 2000 to 2007 contemporary Australian horror production has experienced a period of strong growth and relative commercial success unequalled throughout the past three decades of Australian film history. This study explores the rise of contemporary Australian horror production: emerging production and distribution models; the films produced; and the industrial, market and technological forces driving production. Australian horror production is a vibrant production sector comprising mainstream and underground spheres of production. Mainstream horror production is an independent, internationally oriented production sector on the margins of the Australian film industry producing titles such as Wolf Creek (2005) and Rogue (2007), while underground production is a fan-based, indie filmmaking subculture, producing credit-card films such as I know How Many Runs You Scored Last Summer (2006) and The Killbillies (2002). Overlap between these spheres of production, results in ‘high-end indie’ films such as Undead (2003) and Gabriel (2007) emerging from the underground but crossing over into the mainstream.

Measured by this standard, we think that Seattle has every reason to feel satisfied. In the Scandinavian American Bank, which, having the largest Savings De posits in the Northwest, is perhaps the best barometer of popular Savings, the record shows: FIRST—A larger number of Savings Depositors; SECOND—A larger total of Savings Deposits; THIRD—A larger average balance to the credit of each depositor Than ever before in the history of the bank. In addition to these Savings Accounts we should consider:— (A) The Large Dumber of our Savings Depositors who have boughl homes in and around Se attle, (we know they have boughl them because in many cases our Mortgage Department helped to furnish tlie money) : and (B) The still larger number of our Savings Depositors who have invested part of their sav ings in small mortgages and bonds which they bought direct from the bank.

  • Country Towns in Australian Films: Trap and Comfort Zone
Country Towns in Australian Films: Trap or Comfort Zone? It was watching Strange Bedfellows (Dean Murphy, 2004) last year, with its patronizing view of country-town life, that set me to wonder about how Australian cinema has viewed these buffers between the metropolis and the bush, about what kinds of narratives it has spun around and inside them. BY BRIAN McFARLANE everal films of the last couple of years foregrounded, for me at least, the perception that the country town is neither one thing nor the other, and that it has rarely been subject to the scrutiny afforded the demographic extremes. What follows is more in the nature of reflection and speculation than orderly survey. To turn to Hollywood, glitzy capital of the filmmaking world, one finds paradox- ically that small-town Americana was practically a narrative staple, that there was almost a genre of films which took seriously what such towns had to offer. 46 • Metro Magazine 146/147 Metro Magazine 146 • 47 Genre, though, is perhaps not the best elty; and Cy Endfield’sImpulse (1954) re- word, as it suggests more similarity than moves its hero from the quotidian predict- these films are apt to exhibit. • Rosalind Nugent-Williams Thesis (PDF 1MB)
Thespioprudence Australian film directors and Film performance “How do our directors work with actors on performance and what is the dominant approach to directing actors in Australian film?” Rosalind Nugent-Williams School of Film and Television Faculty of Creative Industries Queensland University of Technology Thesis in partial fulfilment of Master of Arts by Research 2004 State of Original Authorship The work contained in this thesis has not been previously submitted for a degree or diploma at any other higher education institution. To the best of my knowledge and belief, the thesis contains no material previously published or written by another person except where due reference is made. Signed: Date 2004 Acknowledgements I wish to thank Helen Yeates and John Hookham for their patience, generosity and wisdom as my supervisors. I also wish to thank my friends, Merran Lawler, Mark Thomas, Margaret-Mary Batch, Genevieve Thackwell-James, my teacher, Wayne Taylor, and my partner, Sean Riordan, for their support. Abstract “…we, directors and actors, put into practice the practice – we don’t practice the theory. I think that if there is no theory of acting, at least there are theoretical laws that we may find, curiously enough, in all traditions of acting. It is true that the term “theory of acting” does not seem fundamentally wrong, but it seems always somewhat imperialistic and pretentious. I prefer to use fundamental laws which we sometimes know but then sometimes lose and forget. It is only practice that all of a sudden can make law or tradition rise to the surface. I will not say then that there is no theory of acting; on the contrary, there have been many of them.

A Consuming Interest: Food Codes In Australian Drama by Gaye Poole A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts (Honours) School of Theatre and Film Studies University of New South Wales. August 1993 TABLE OF CONTENTS Abstract Acknowledgements i i List of illustrations iii Introduction 1-22 Chapter One: Background: food in drama. 23-43 Chapter Two: Australian plays based on a meal 44-77 Chapter Three: Food as currency for power and site of family politics in Australian drama. 7 8-1 04 Chapter Four: Food rituals in Australian drama: nostalgia, 'social' rituals and death 105-144 Chapter Five: Women and food: eating/not eating and women eaten. 145-194 Chapter Six: Conclusion 195-202 Appendix A: Sweets and Drinks on stage 203-224 Appendix B: Practicalities of food on stage 225-230 Bibliography 231-250 i ABSTRACT In the context of current critical attention to food in related disciplines, this thesis sets out to explore food codes in Australian drama. Chapter One gives a brief background to contemporary Australian food uses in drama and in so doing identifies some of the continuities, discontinuities and sh"ifts in the ways in which food has been incorporated into drama. Chapter Two focuses on plays whose entire proceedings or key scene take the form of a meal. It is observed that food on stage as a gathering and shaping element takes one of several forms: a communal event; the turning point of the play, or the interrupted meal. Chapter Three argues that food bestows power on its controllers.
