Kauffman All Rights Reserved SEATTLE’S SEAFARING SIREN 4 Abstract Many corporate brands tend to be built on a strong foundation of culture, but very minimal research seems to indicate a thorough analysis of the role of an organizational’s culture in its entirety pertaining to large corporations. This study analyzed various facets of Starbucks Coffee Company through use of the cultural approach to organizations theory in order to determine if the founding principles of Starbucks are evident in their organizational culture. Howard Schultz’ book “Onward” was analyzed and documented as the key textual artifact in which these principles originated. Along with these principles, Starbucks’ Website, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube page were analyzed to determine how Starbucks’ culture was portrayed on these sites. The rhetorical analysis of Schultz’ book “Onward” conveyed that Starbucks’ culture is broken up into a professional portion and a personal portion, each overlapping one another in its principles. After sifting through various tweets, posts and videos, this study found that Starbucks has created a perfect balance of culture, which is fundamentally driven by their values and initiatives in coffee, ethics, relationships and storytelling. This study ultimately found that Starbucks’ organizational culture is not only carrying out their initiatives that they principally set out to perform, but they are also doing so across all platforms while engaging others to do the same. -

ORGANISING ANARCHY SPATIAL STRATEGY , PREFIGURATION , AND THE POLITICS OF EVERYDAY LIFE ANTHONY JAMES ELLIOT INCE THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY QUEEN MARY , UNIVERSITY OF LONDON 2010 0 ABSTRACT This research is an analysis of efforts to develop a politics of everyday life through embedding anarchist and left-libertarian ideas and practices into community and workplace organisation. It investigates everyday life as a key terrain of political engagement, interrogating the everyday spatial strategies of two emerging forms of radical politics. The community dimension of the research focuses on two London-based social centre collectives, understood as community-based, anarchist-run political spaces. The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), an international trade union that organises along radical left-libertarian principles, comprises the workplace element. The empirical research was conducted primarily through an activist-ethnographic methodology. Based in a politically-engaged framework, the research opens up debates surrounding the role of place-based class politics in a globalised world, and how such efforts can contribute to our understanding of social relations, place, networks, and political mobilisation and transformation. The research thus contributes to and provides new perspectives on understanding and enacting everyday spatial strategies. Utilising Marxist and anarchist thought, the research develops a distinctive theoretical framework that draws inspiration from both perspectives. Through an emphasis on how groups seek to implement particular radical principles, the research also explores the complex interactions between theory and practice in radical politics. I argue that it is in everyday spaces and practices where we find the most powerful sources for political transformation. -

Starbucks generally preferred a strategy of premium prices, using a menu and store layout somewhat modified for local tastes. This strategy had been working well in India. However, local and foreign specialty coffee retailers were proving increasingly formidable competitors. India’s larger cities were becoming saturated. Many competitors had now turned their attention to expanding into smaller cities. India was a large, but complex market, fragmented along age, geographic, income, and demographic lines. Continued success was not certain. It was not yet clear how Starbucks should best adapt. Starbucks’ History In 1971, English teacher Jerry Baldwin, history teacher Zev Siegel, and writer Gordon Bowker, opened the original Starbucks Coffee, Tea and Spice, in Pike Place Market in Seattle (Strickland, 1999). The store began by selling scoops of freshly roasted coffee beans. The founders named their store after Starbuck, a ship captain in Herman Melville’s Moby Dick novel who drank a lot of coffee. -
