Typically, the SE is characterized by δ Ccarb values that plunge to a nadir of ca. −10‰ over a short stratigraphic interval and then rise steadily in the overlying tens or hundreds of meters before recovering to baseline values of ca. +5‰. It was recently hypothesized that 13C-depleted authigenic carbonates may have contributed to the SE. Supporting evidence for this hypothesis has been found in South China, where an atypical SE at Zhongling has been arguably correlated with the typical SE at Jiulongwan. Sedimentological and geochemical investigation of the Zhongling section finds several dolostone 13 intervals with distinct methane-derived authigenic calcite nodules or cements (δ Ccarb down to –37.2‰) in the upper Doushantuo Formation. Despite intensive studies of the Zhongling section, the origin of these authigenic carbonates and their causal link to the typical SE remain enigmatic. To better understand the genesis of these authigenic calcites, we conducted a detailed study via μXRF, CL, SEM, and SIMS. The SIMS data show a range 13 of over 40‰ in δ Ccarb (in situ, 7 mm spots) with negative values (from –37.5‰ to –9.3‰) in authigenic calcites and positive values (mostly from +0.2‰ to +4.0‰) in marine dolomites. Detailed μXRF, CL and SEM results reveal that the authigenic calcite phase displays dull luminescence and is more enriched in Sr compared with the dolomite phase. Based on multiple lines of field, petrographic, and geochemical evidence, we conclude that authigenic calcites in the upper Doushantuo Formation at Zhongling are syndepositional (during early diagenesis, before sediment compaction), and formed after the dissolution of preexisting dolomite. Microbial sulfate reduction and anaerobic oxidation of methane during marine authigenesis may have played a central role in generating 13 the anomalous low-δ Ccarb signals. The atypical SE at Zhongling, therefore, provides a unique window to studying the origin of the global SE. Session No. 272--Booth# 223 T108.     REPORT for the 88th IUVSTA Workshop “Towards Reality in Nanoscale Materials” Background and outcome The 88th workshop was organized under the sponsorships of Aalto University, TSV Federation and the IUVSTA Nanometer Structures Division with the support of the Electronic Materials and Process Division and Surface Engineering Division on 12-14 February 2019 in Levi, Finland. The workshop was jointly organized by Prof. Adam Foster, Aalto University, Dr. Carla Bittencourt, University of Mons, Belgium, Dr. Arkady Krasheninnikov, Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, Germany and Aalto University, Finland and Dr. Teemu Hynninen, University of Turku, Finland.     Proceedings of the 18th edition of the BElgian-NEtherlands software eVOLution symposium http://soft.vub.ac.be/benevol2019/ Dario Di Nucci Coen De Roover Tilburg University / JADS Vrije Universiteit Brussel The goal of BENEVOL is to bring together researchers who are working in the field of software evolution and maintenance. BENEVOL offers an informal forum to meet and to discuss new ideas, important problems, and obtained research results. The 18th edition of BENEVOL was organized and hosted by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium from 28th to 29th November 2019. It accepted 11 technical papers and 20 presentation abstracts. Technical papers underwent a mild yet constructive review. We explicitly solicited papers in the early stages of research, which are still rather rough around the edges and could benefit from feedback from the community. Technical papers were reviewed by at least three members of the program committee, assessing whether they are within the scope of BENEVOL (i.e., software maintenance and evolution) and meet its quality criteria. The papers part of the proceedings includes the feedback received during the workshop. Presentation abstracts report on research results that have already been published, or that are ready to be submitted to a conference or a journal. They were reviewed for relevance, and are not included in the BENEVOL proceedings. These contributions are available on the website of the workshop. Furthermore, BENEVOL 2019 featured two keynotes this year. Fabio Palomba, assistant professor at the University of Salerno, gave an overview of the problems, solutions, and challenges associated with flaky tests. Vadim Zaytsev, chief science officer of Raincode Labs talked about his experience in developing and teaching how to build compilers for legacy languages.

  • The DREAMS Databases and Assessment Algorithm
    The DREAMS Databases and Assessment Algorithm During the DREAMS project, we collected a large amount of polysomnographic recordings (PSG) to tune, train and test our automatic detection algorithms. These recordings were annotated in microevents or in sleep stages by several experts. They were acquired in a sleep laboratory of a Belgium hospital using a digital 32-channel polygraph (BrainnetTM System of MEDATEC, Brussels, Belgium). The standard European Data Format (EDF) was used for storing. In order to facilitate future research and performance comparision, we decided to publish these data on Internet.
