Prior to the colonial era, African states that were independent and sovereign of each other had visionary leaders who piloted the affairs of their domains to enviable heights. These crop of leaders were determined to protect and preserve the territorial integrity of their kingdoms. In recent years, leadership is categorized as one of the bane of Africa underdevelopment. This paper therefore examines leadership in pre-colonial Africa with reference to Mansa Sundiata Keita and Mansa Musa of Mali Empire. The researchers generated the needed data through primary and secondary sources of information. The interdisciplinary approach was also adopted in generating data for the study. As regards theory, the trait and transformational leadership theories were adopted to guide our study. From the analysis it was observed that the pre-colonial societies of Africa had good leaders who were committed to empire building, development, rule of law, equity and fairness amongst others. Furthermore, the paper revealed that Mansa Sundiata and Mansa Musa were visionary leaders who contributed through their selfless service to the growth and development of Mali Empire.

Raman Centre for Physics and Music Jadavpur University, Kolkata: 700032 *[email protected] * Corresponding Author ABSTRACT Categorization is crucial for content description in archiving of music signals. On many occasions, human brain fails to classify the instruments properly just by listening to their sounds which is evident from the human response data collected during our experiment. Some previous attempts to categorize several musical instruments using various linear analysis methods required a number of parameters to be determined. In this work, we attempted to categorize a number of string instruments according to their mode of playing using latest-state-of-the-art robust non-linear methods. For this, 30 second sound signals of 26 different string instruments from all over the world were analyzed with the help of non linear multifractal analysis (MFDFA) technique. The spectral width obtained from the MFDFA method gives an estimate of the complexity of the signal. From the variation of spectral width, we observed distinct clustering among the string instruments according to their mode of playing. Also there is an indication that similarity in the structural configuration of the instruments is playing a major role in the clustering of their spectral width. The observations and implications are discussed in detail. A beard is the beauty of a man; proverbs are the beauty of speech. Abstract: This article presents two groups of Uyghur proverbs on the topics of friendship and wisdom, to my knowledge only the second set of Uyghur proverbs published with English translation (after Mahmut & Smith-Finley 2016). It begins with a brief introduction of Uyghur language and culture, then a description of Uyghur proverb styles, then the two sets of proverbs, and finally a few concluding comments. Key words: Proverb, Uyghur, folly, wisdom, friend, enemy 1. Introduction Uyghur is spoken by about 10 million people, mostly in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. It is a Turkic language, most closely related to Uzbek and Salar, but also sharing similarity with its neighbors Kazakh and Kyrgyz. The lexicon is composed of about 50% old Turkic roots, 40% relatively old borrowings from Arabic and Persian, and 6% from Russian and 2% from Mandarin (Nadzhip 1971; since then, the Russian and Mandarin borrowings have presumably seen a slight increase due to increased language contact, especially with Mandarin). The grammar is generally head-final, with default SOV clause structure, A-N noun phrases, and postpositions. Stress is typically word-final. Its phoneme inventory includes eight vowels and 24 consonants. The phonology includes vowel harmony in both roots and suffixes, which is sensitive to rounded/unrounded (labial harmony) and front/back (palatal harmony), consonant harmony across suffixes, which is sensitive to voiced/unvoiced and front/back distinctions; and frequent devoicing of high vowels (see Comrie 1997 and Hahn 1991 for details).

In London there were regular venues, regular audiences, regular incomes.”2 The first playhouses had been built in 1576; at least two professional “playhouses were flourishing in 1577.”3 (Shakespeare was then a country lad of thirteen.)
