It is the teacher's responsibility to guide students in building an effective and injury-free piano technique. Improper technique, poor training and bad posture at the instrument all may cause problems such as lack of muscle control, weakness, or tension in the hands. Many teachers are interested in finding information about specific exercises dealing with finger strengthening, stretching, and warm-up strategies, as well as guidelines for safe practicing. It is therefore important for both teachers and students to understand how to build a technique from the earliest years of instruction. Carl Tausig (1841-1871) and Alfred Cortot (1877-1962) both contributed to the development of piano technique by writing books that include a significant number of exercises and excerpts. Their books incorporate detailed instructions on how to play each exercise effectively and without fatigue. Subsequently, Heinrich Ehrlich (1822-1899) collected and systematically arranged Tausig's notes, complementing them with detailed information on how to play Tausig's exercises without causing injury. This dissertation compares and contrasts the exercises found in Alfred Cortot's book, Rational Principles of Pianoforte Technique, and Carl Tausig's book, Daily Studies for the Pianoforte. The latter is based on the practical guidebook, How to Practise on the Piano: Reflections and Suggestions, written by Heinrich Ehrlich. Included in this study are references to the performing arts medical literature dealing with pianists' injuries. By comparing two different historical piano methods and considering their effectiveness in light of modern medical performance research, this dissertation aims to help teachers to determine which methods might be better for students to build a solid piano technique without injuring themselves.     An Attempt to Define Ignacy Jan Paderewski’s Performing Style by Prof. Lidia Kozubek Prof. Lidia Kozubek, concert pianist and one of Poland’s most prominent piano educators, is well known to music lovers in nearly all European countries as well as in Africa, both Americas, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Besides concertizing and recording music, Prof. Kozubek is a faculty member of the Warsaw Academy of Music. She has also taught a number of piano students in other countries (such as Japan, Norway, Taiwan and Philippines just to mention a few) as a visiting professor or lecturer. For her artistic and educational achievement Prof. Kozubek received highly regarded national distinctions from Polish government, including the Chevalier Cross “Polonia Restituta.” An inquiry as to who was Paderewski seems to be a good starting point for a discussion of the pianist’s performing style. Paderewski was without doubt a personality of his times. Even among the greatest contemporary musicians, Paderewski remains a phenomenon. He had extraordinary combination of virtues, a multitude of talents and, above all, personal charm, unusual honesty and decency. All of these qualities allowed him to be highly successful in a variety of fields. Paderewski was simply an exceptional human figure. The legend surrounding his pianism is justified not only by his musical genius, but also by the richness of his character, which certainly had an impact on his performing style. As a composer, Paderewski was not always appreciated, but he definitely had a solid theoretical background and developed a strong individual style in which the “Polish tone” is easily found.

    Whose Chopin? Politics and Patriotism in A Song to Remember (1945) John C. Tibbetts Columbia Pictures launched with characteristic puffery its early 1945 release, A Song to Remember, a dramatized biography of nineteenth-century composer Frederic Chopin. "A Song to Remember is destined to rank with the greatest attractions since motion pictures began," boasted a publicity statement, "—seven years of never-ending effort to bring you a glorious new landmark in motion picture achievement."1 Variety subsequently enthused, "This dramatization of the life and times of Frederic Chopin, the Polish musician-patriot, is the most exciting presentation of an artist yet achieved on the screen."2 These accolades proved to be misleading, however. Viewers expecting a "life" of Chopin encountered a very different kind of film. Instead of an historical chronicle of Chopin's life, times, and music, A Song to Remember, to the dismay of several critics, reconstituted the story as a wartime resistance drama targeted more to World War II popular audiences at home and abroad than to enthusiasts of nineteenth-century music history.3 As such, the film belongs to a group of Hollywood wartime propaganda pictures mandated in 1942-1945 by the Office of War Information (OWI) and its Bureau of Motion Pictures (BMP)—and subject, like all films of the time, to the censorial constraints of the Production Code Administration (PCA)—to stress ideology and affirmation in the cause of democracy and to depict the global conflict as a "people's war."     THE LAUSANNE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Joshua Weilerstein, artistic director The Lausanne Chamber Orchestra (OCL), founded in 1942 by violinist Victor Desarzens, has continued to spread its wings to become one of today’s most sought-after chamber orchestras in Europe. In 2015, the OCL appointed Joshua Weilerstein, one of the most promising young directors of the new generation, as its artistic director. From September 2021, the internationally renowned Renaud Capuçon will be the new artistic director. The OCL is a classical orchestra (an orchestra with about forty instrumentalists) influenced by the Mannheim school, covering a vast repertoire ranging from early Baroque to contemporary music. From its beginnings, the OCL was invited abroad, participating at the the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence from the second edition on. The concert tours first in Germany and then in the United States were a resounding success, as were its more recent performances at the Theatre of Champs Elysées in Paris and the BBC Proms in London. Among the OCL’s recent guest appearances, it is worth mentioning the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, the Rostropovich Festival in Moscow, the Istanbul Festival, the Wiener Konzerthaus and the Berliner Philharmonie. In 2018-2019, the OCL performed for the first time with the pianist Chick Corea at Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona and played at the Rostropovich Festival Baku, Azerbaijan. In October 2020 Simone Young takes the orchestra to the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The OCL’s concerts showcase the work of great soloists of the past and of rising stars, including pianists from Clara Haskil, Alfred Cortot, Walter Gieseking and Edwin Fischer to Murray Perahia, Radu Lupu, Martha Argerich and Nikolai Lugansky; violinists from Arthur Grumiaux to Frank Peter Zimmermann; cellists from Paul Tortelier to Truls Mørk; and flutists from Jean-Pierre Rampal to Emmanuel Pahud.

    Liszt’s Sonata in B minor and a Woman Composer’s Fingerprint: The quasi Adagio theme and a Lied by Maria Pavlovna (Romanova) Tibor Szász Illustration 1: The six-pointed star of Liszt’s Consolation No. 4, first edition.1 Perhaps no other work by Ferenc Liszt (1811-1886) has elicited more debate amongst pianists, critics, theorists, and musicologists than his magnum opus for piano solo—the Sonata in B-minor, finished in 1853. Information contained in a letter written by the London-based Chopinologist Arthur Hedley (1905-1969), together with my correlated research have enabled me to prove that the Andante sostenuto / quasi Adagio theme of the Sonata in B minor is traceable to a Lied composed in 1849 (or earlier) by one Maria Pavlovna. Maria Pavlovna (Marija Pawlowna, 1786-1859) was a descendant of the Romanow-Holstein-Gottorp dynasty, the third daughter of Russian Tsar Paul I and Sophie Dorothea of Württemberg; by way of her marriage to Charles Frederick, she became Grand Duchess of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. She was a patroness of the arts and sciences, a devout Christian dedicated to helping women and the poor, and a gifted composer of Lieder. Her great love of music inspired her to learn to sing, to play the piano, the harpsichord and the harp. She studied composition with Giuseppe Sarti (1729-1802), Johann Gottlieb Töpfer (1791-1870) and Liszt himself. It was Pavlovna who appointed Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837), and later Liszt to the position of Kapellmeister of the Weimar Court.2 According to Eduard Franz Genast (1797-1866), she had not only taken piano lessons from Hummel, but could read and transpose from a full orchestral score “like a Kapellmeister.”3 The melodic design of the Pavlovna Lied constitutes a never-before identified genetic link between two works for piano solo whose publication was authorized by Liszt himself: the Consolation No.
