In Chasidic the gift of Medinat Yisrael we feel closer than ever to the thought, the sun and the moon are symbols for the ideal and fulfillment of the ideal : a source of morality and reality, respectively. Real life will never exactly match what we RABBI YOSEF WEINSTOCK hope it to be. Yet we must try to make the reflection in reality as close as possible to the ideal.

The sun is always full. It remains constant. We experience the moon in a completely different manner. The moon waxes and wanes, varying in our perspective from completely full to barely visible. Traditionally, this phenomenon has been compared to the experience of the Jewish people throughout history. Sometimes, our presence shines forth onto the world stage with intensity. We can extend the symbolism of the moon to the individual. The moon mirrors our religious experience, not as we might ideally want it to be but rather how it exists in reality. There are times when we feel inspired, when all the dots in our life seem to connect. Our faith and religious conviction at those times are strong, and can illuminate our lives like a full moon.

Q: I davened Mincha earlier in the afternoon (before Plag Hamincha). Later in the afternoon (after Plag Hamincha) I am at shul while the minyan is about to daven Mincha. I cannot stay for Maariv. Can I daven my Maariv Amidah while the minyan davens the Mincha Amidah, and get credit for “Tefilah B’TZibur”?

A: Magen Avraham (OC 90:16) writes that you cannot fulfill Tefilah B’TZibur in this way. His proof is from Avoda Zara 4b that forbad davening Mussaf on Rosh Hashana at home within the first three hours of the day when the Tzibur is davening Shacharit in Shul. However, the Eliya Rabba (236:7) argues that it would be considered Tefilah B’TZibur if you are actually in the shul. Though this is a dispute among later authorities, the consensus opinion is like the Magen Avraham.

Q: Is one obligated to observe the mitzvot on the moon?

A: This question is discussed in the book "Man on the Moon" by Rav Menachem Kasher. It is clear that a person is obligated to perform the mitzvot on the moon. The Torah preceded the world, and not only are we obligated to observe it in Eretz Yisrael and everywhere in the world, but everywhere in the Universe as well. There are particular laws and practices that may be different on the moon, such as: Halachic times, when Shabbat should be observed, but everyone agrees that a Jew would be obligated in these halachot on the moon. An interesting question was raised concerning Kiddush Levana. One needs to be able to see the moon when reciting this prayer. Can you say Kiddush Levana if you are standing on the moon, and therefore you will not see the moon in the sky? (Rav Kasher says that one would not say Kiddush Levana on the moon, while Rav Menashe Klein ruled that one could say it.)

Q: Can one fulfill the mitzvah of Mishloach Manot if the package is sent anonymously?

A: There is a difference of opinion as to the purpose of Mishloach Manot. According to the Terumat HaDeshen, the purpose is to provide foodstuffs for the Purim Seudah. According to this approach, even anonymous Mishloach Manot would fulfill this purpose, and the mitzvah has been fulfilled. Rav Shlomo Alkabetz (author of Lecha Dodi that we sing at Kabbalat Shabbat) writes that the purpose of Mishloach Manot is to foster friendship between the giver and the recipient. According to this approach, anonymous Mishloach Manot would not fulfill the obligation. It is proper to follow Rav Alkabetz’s opinion.

Celebrating Golda Meir

There have been many Israeli leaders, but only one “Golda.” Fifty years ago this March, she became Israel’s first female prime minister.

Born in Kiev in 1898, she started life as Goldie Mabovitch. She and her family immigrated to the United States in 1906, settling in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she was educated and became a teacher. She married Morris Myerson in 1917, and in 1921 she and her husband left for a kibbutz in the then-British Mandate of Palestine.

Beginning in 1928, Golda was the secretary of the Working Women’s Council in Palestine. She served as its representative on the leadership of the Histadrut, the national trade union of mandatory Palestine. In 1929, she was elected to be a delegate to most meetings of the World Zionist Organization. This was the real beginning of her Zionist political activity.

In 1940, she was appointed head of the political department of the Histadrut. She had a leading role in fighting against the British White Paper of 1939, which limited Jewish immigration to Palestine. As the Nazis sought to exterminate Europe’s Jews, Golda organized illegal Jewish immigration to the safety of Palestine.

Golda rose high and quick in pre-state politics. As head of the political department of the Jewish Agency, from 1946, she worked for the many Jewish refugees who had fled Europe for Palestine, and for the release of leading Zionists who had been arrested.

Early in 1948 she visited the United States to organize an emergency fundraising campaign for Palestine. It was widely assumed the trip could raise no more than $8 million. Golda raised $50 million, the equivalent of more than half a billion dollars today.

At age 50 Golda was one of the signatories of Israel’s Proclamation of Independence. She was Israel’s inaugural ambassador to the then-Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), and held Israel’s first-ever passport. In 1949 she was elected to the Knesset, and served as minister of labor until 1956 when she became foreign minister, and Hebraized her last name to Meir.

When Golda retired as foreign minister in 1966, she agreed to take over the leadership of Israel’s Mapai Party. She succeeded in uniting three main labor groups—Mapai, Achdut Ha’Avodah and Rafi—into one political party (Labor). The summer following the merger Golda retired from political activity.

However, after the death of Prime Minister Levi Eshkol in 1969, Golda came out of retirement to assume the post of Israel’s prime minister. During her premiership, she ordered the Mossad to hunt down those responsible for the massacre of Israeli Olympians in Munich and led Israel to victory in the Yom Kippur War. Her diplomatic expertise was put to the test when she successfully negotiated with President Nixon for vital U.S. military aid, which turned the tide of the Yom Kippur War and set the stage for future U.S.-Israel defense cooperation. Despite leading her party to victory in the 1973 elections, she resigned in 1974, feeling that her work on behalf of the state was done. She died in Jerusalem of cancer in 1978, at age 80.

Golda Meir was a titan of modern Zionism and one of the most accomplished women of the twentieth century. Her impact on state of Israel and the U.S.-Israel relationship continues to this day.
