Country Music in Australia 2018 1 Project Summary & Methodology 2018 was a stellar year for Australian country music. Kasey Chambers was memorably inducted as the youngest female ever into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Keith Urban was acknowledged by the US Country Music Association as its Entertainer of The Year. Morgan Evans achieved notable #1’s on US, ARIA and Australian airplay charts. Country music festivals reported record attendances and box office results, moreAustralians are listening to more country on radio than ever before and music streaming – the juggernaut driving the global and Australian industry revival, is being enthusiastically embraced by country fans listening on their phones, in their cars and on tablets and smart speakers. More Australian country music artists are writing, recording and performing and are being listened to and watched by more fans than ever before. Over a seven month period, extensive desk research, industry consultation and the responses from 4,329 country music fans and 582 artists, enabled us to chart our genre’s progress since the first and only such report - ‘Australian Country Music:An Industry Profile’, was compiled in 1997. This current report concentrated on country music live performance, the recorded music market, songs and songwriting, country music broadcast and airplay and the cultural and social value it delivers to its fans and the broader community. The accumulated data has confirmed that country music 2018 is in a growth phase that all indicators and opinions suggest will continue. -

It was approved by the Board on 11 September 2019 and provides a comprehensive review of the ABC’s performance and delivery in line with its Charter remit. The ABC continues to be the home and source of Australian stories, told across the nation and to the world. Postprint version, with page numbers edited to match the published version. 1 Including music and the temporal arts in language documentation Linda Barwick This chapter is intended for linguistic researchers preparing to undertake fieldwork, probably documenting one of the world’s many small or endangered languages. Recognising that linguists have their own priorities and methodologies in language documentation and description, I will advance reasons for including in your corpus the song and/or instrumental music that you are almost certain to encounter in the course of your fieldwork. I start by providing an overview of current thinking about the nature and significance of human musical capacities and the commonly encountered types, context and significance of music, especially in relation to language. Since research funding usually precludes having a musicologist tag along in the original fieldwork, I will suggest some topics for discussion that would be of interest to musicologists, and make some suggestions for what is needed on a practical level to make your recordings useful to 166 musicologists at a later date. I comment on the technical and practical requirements for a good musical documentation and how these might differ from language documentation, and also provide some suggestions on a workflow for field production of musical recordings for community use. Examples taken from my own fieldwork are intended to provide food for thought, and not to imply that music and dance traditions in other societies are necessarily structured in comparable ways. -

Directors The Directors of the Company at any time during or since the financial year are: Jenny Morris OAM, MNZM Non-executive Writer Director since 1995 and Chair of the Board A writer member of APRA since 1983, Jenny has been a music writer, performer and recording artist since 1980 with three top 5 and four top 20 singles in Australia and similar success in New Zealand. Jenny has recorded nine albums gaining gold, platinum and multi-platinum status in the process and won back to back ARIA awards for best female vocalist. Jenny was inducted into the NZ Music Hall of Fame in 2018. Jenny is also a non-executive director and passionate supporter of Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy Australia. Jenny presents their biennial ‘Art of Music’ gala event, which raises significant and much needed funds for the charity. Bob Aird Non-executive Publisher Director from 1989 to 2019 Bob recently retired from his position as Managing Director of Universal Music Publishing Pty Limited, Universal Music Publishing Group Pty Ltd, Universal/MCA Publishing Pty Limited, Essex Music of Australia Pty Limited and Cromwell Music of Australia Pty Limited which he held for 16 years. -

Something that’s given you joy, a vocation, even fame – and then one day it starts slipping away... For singer Jenny Morris, that question recently became very real. The ARIA Award-winning performer makes a dramatic personal revelation in this week’s episode of Australian Story. She has been diagnosed with a life-changing medical condition. “It was evident that Jenny wanted to just play it down until she knew what was going on,” says her sister, singer Shanley Del. Jenny Morris first found success with New Zealand band The Crocodiles, before relocating to Australia in the early 1980s. After recording and touring with INXS as a backing singer, she established a successful solo career with hits such as Break in the Weather and She has to be Loved, as well as performing with Prince and Paul McCartney. About 10 years ago, she noticed something going on with her voice. “I’ve never talked about it publicly, and I think putting the word out there is going to give a sense of relief. That’s why I’m doing Australian Story because I think if you want to know what’s what, look at this program. Then I don’t have to explain it,” she says. RELATING THE PRESENT TO THE PAST THOUGHTS ON THE STUDY OF MUSICAL CHANGE AND CULTURE CHANGE IN ETHNOMUSICOLOGY Bruno Nettl http://www.muspe.unibo.it/period/MA/index/number1/nettl1/ne1.htm The relationship of past to present is one of the principal issues in all human cultures. It is also perhaps the most important task of many areas of scholarship, and in different ways, of musicology and anthropology. In ethnomusicology and in anthropology, one of the principal ways of associating past to present has been through the concepts of culture change and musical change, the idea that something that a society maintains and shares can change in character or in detail and yet remain essentially the same. I would like to approach the relationship of past and present through this concept. It is an immense subject, and you will understand why I have had problems finding ways to grasp it. To deal with it properly might require that one define culture and music and then change, to say nothing of providing a bibliography. But instead, as a more modest goal, I would like to try to circumscribe the subject by mentioning and discussing a few of the issues that dominate this area of endeavor, phrasing each in terms of a widely accepted generalization and then illustrating each with something from my experience. The ultimate concern of musicology has always been the nature of musical change. The majority of musicologists, who see themselves mainly as music historians, have tried to show that there is a systematic way in which music proceeds from past to present, using, for example, the concept of periods, the significance of biography, the belief that similarity or identity must usually be explained by contact and influence. -

It was back in 2004 when Miss Connie and producer/DJ Angus McDonald started making beautiful music together. A series of singles at first then, in 2006, their self-titled, 3 x platinum debut album. Spearheaded by a spectacular salvo of chart topping hits – UFO, Pictures and I Love It – Sneaky Sound System won ARIA Awards for Breakthrough Artist and Best Dance Release, the first of 14 nominations to-date. Second long-player and #1 album 2 arrived in 2008 with yet more dancefloor slayers in the form of Kansas City, When We Were Young and the #1 UK club smash It’s Not My Problem. In 2009 I Will Be Here, a collaboration with Dutch superstar DJ Tiesto, took Sneaky to the top of both the US dance airplay and UK club charts. In late 2011 album number three, From Here To Anywhere, arrived, the title referencing its creation in hotel suites, planes, and studios around the world from here (Sydney) to just about everywhere (London, Paris, Ibiza, Moscow).
