Outstanding sounds from The Black Seeds Sola Rosa Batucada Sound Machine Plus other great local talent

Date: Saturday 30 March (Easter Weekend) Time: 11am - 7pm Unitec’s Sounds In The Sun is the largest of the orientation events Venue: Toll Stadium, Whangarei in all of New Zealand and this year the deluge of acts – including Tahuna Tickets from: www.eventfinda.co.nz Breaks, Nina McSweeney and dDub – are just some of the names joining the line-up. As much a celebration of the rituals that mark the beginning of the university year, Sounds In The Sun is also a celebration of some of New Zealand’s biggest names in music.

This years’ event will also see the incorporation of a brand new Kids Day Out Zone, gearing it more toward family orientation. There will also be food stalls, market stalls and festival rides.

Katchafire are one of the biggest names in New Zealand reggae. Their craft has been refined for their latest offering. Billed as a testament to organic Aotearoa reggae and charged with sensibility, the new album On The Road Again holds a flame to the fine balance of classic roots reggae completed with a flavour of R’n’B and funk. No strangers to success, their latest offering On The Road Again follows a double platinum debut, a platinum second album and a critically acclaimed 2007 release, Say What You’re Thinking.

They are joined by Nina McSweeney. The songstress, known notably for her collaborations with Concord Dawn, has a history of performing as a vocalist and blues harmonica across national and international stages. Her debut album The Bitter Sea was co-produced by McSweeney herself and Brendon Kahi in only four days. The album has developed its own genre dubbed “creep folk” and has a collection of songs and stories that have a cinematic air of intrigue.

Pieter T, whose debut album Life, Love and Lessons was voted best album on Flava FM in 2011, and the genre splitting Sola Rosa is also on this years’ bill.

Tahuna Breaks and Weird Together round out the event with the former a seven piece energetic and raw live act and the latter the new studio and live project from Dick Johnson and Nick D.

GET READY TO ROCK YOUR WORLD

THE ANNUAL ALL-ROUND, FEEL-GOOD FESTIVAL IS BACK AGAIN AND READY TO INTRODUCE YOU TO NEW EXPERIENCES. Late last year, I was treated to some fantastic Taranaki hospitality One of the stars this year has to be South Africa’s Hugh Masekela. His when the line-up for Womad 2013 (World of Music and Dance) was trumpet gave a plaintive voice to black South Africa’s deep troubles announced during a launch at parliament. Every year I’m both intrigued during the apartheid years. His signature Afro-jazz sound remains and delighted to learn who’s on the bill. poignant, rousing and inspirational even after more than half a century of performing. He’s galvanised anti-apartheid support, both domestically The line-up is always guaranteed to include the known, the unknown and on an international level, and playing tunes of defiance and hope, and the ready-to-be-discovered. And it’s this last category that always he’s opened the borders of jazz to include anything from kwela, African leaves a lasting impression. Arts director Drew James’ mission is always township jive and Afro-beat. If you’re going to choose only one night, to top the diversity and challenge of the previous year’s programme. then make it Friday and catch this man in his one and only performance!
