AREC 689L Experimental Economics Experimental Economics Spring 2010 Taking a course in experimental economics is a little like going to dinner at a cannibal's house. Sometimes you will be the diner, sometimes you will be part of the dinner, sometimes both. If you take a laboratory course in the physical sciences, you get to mix smelly chemicals, or monkey with pulleys, or dissect a frog, but you are always the experimenter and never the subject of the experiment. In the market experiments conducted in this class, you and your classmates will be the participants in the markets as well as the scientific observers who try to understand the results. It is hard to imagine that a chemist can put herself in the place of a hydrogen molecule. A biologist who studies animal behavior is not likely to know what it feels like to be a duck. You are more fortunate. You are studying the behavior and interactions of people in economically interesting situations. And as one of these interacting economic agents, you will be able to experience the problems faced by such an agent first hand. We suspect that you will learn nearly as much about economic principles from your experience as a participant as you will from your analysis as an observer. ---Bergstrom and Miller’s 1999 preface. Course Description: This course will provide the student with the necessary tools to be an avid consumer of the experimental literature and eventually a producer of the literature. Thus, it will provide a summary of recent experimental findings and detail how to gather and analyze data using experimental methods. There is no official text, but students are encouraged to look at the excellent books of Douglas Davis and Charles Holt [Experimental Economics, 1993] as well as John Kagel and Alvin Roth [Handbook of Experimental Economics, 1995]. The course will be conducted as both a teaching and research opportunity for all involved. The major emphasis will be an introduction to the tools of the trade as well as an emphasis on new questions and new experiments that could be conducted to address them. Course Outline: One caveat is that this is merely a sampling of work that has been done in a few areas of study. The field is growing fast and I desire to give you a glimpse of some of the manuscripts that have been published and a brief look at some working papers. I am sure that we will add to this list along the way. A more complete list can be found at Charlie Holt’s (U. Virginia) website. My website contains a list of field experiments: www.fieldexperiments.com Grading: You are required to fulfill the following assignments, with grading weights in parentheses. There is no mid-term or final exam, but take-home questions will be given occasionally. (50) Quizzes and take-home questions: Roughly 3 or so quizzes will be given during the lab hour. I reserve the right to give announced—or surprise—quizzes during scheduled class time as well. We will throw out your worst performance and average the remaining quizzes. Every few weeks or so I will give take-home questions; each of you will be responsible for answering these questions and turning them in at the required time. Handing these in late will be punished severely with point deductions of 5 points per hour late. (35) Research Presentation: Each of you is expected to assemble a research proposal by the end of the quarter—since the class is so large I would prefer if people would do these in groups of up to 5. This proposal begins by providing a literature survey of a series of experimental studies. Experimentalists typically take stock in making steady, incremental progress to speak to theorists and policymakers, and to find facts. This follows from the belief that a series of experiments provides a more reliable conclusion than any sporadic group of studies. I subscribe to this belief as well. Accordingly, you need to be an expert in your chosen area of research. The proposal then describes a new research question(s) and why it is important, and also includes relevant theory, experimental instructions, and an experimental design. To facilitate feedback, each group is required to present his/her research proposal near the end of the quarter in a 20-minute time slot. The written proposal is due 48 hours after your presentation and you should take account of the comments given during your seminar. Some guidelines questions that we will discuss: 1. What is the question you would like to have answered after the experiment? (Your answer should be a single sentence with a question mark at the end.) 2. What do you know already about the possible answers to the question you have stated above? 3. What are the various possible ways of finding an answer to the question you have stated above? Include both experimental as well as any other methods you know about. 4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using an experiment to find an answer? 5. What are the chances that the answer you get from the experiment will surprise you or others? What are the chances that it will change someone’s mind? 6. How would you conduct the experiment? (Write down a design and instructions.) 7. Is your experimental design the simplest possible design to help answer the question you have stated? 8. What are the possible outcomes of the experiment? Do the possible outcomes include at least one outcome that will answer the question you stated above? What is the chance that you will observe this outcome? (15) Class participation: asking questions, reading the assigned papers, etc., all lead to good scholarship. I am demanding that you are prepared and participate in class.     Field Experiments in Development Economics1 Esther Duflo Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Department of Economics and Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab) BREAD, CEPR, NBER January 2006 Prepared for the World Congress of the Econometric Society Abstract There is a long tradition in development economics of collecting original data to test specific hypotheses. Over the last 10 years, this tradition has merged with an expertise in setting up randomized field experiments, resulting in an increasingly large number of studies where an original experiment has been set up to test economic theories and hypotheses. This paper extracts some substantive and methodological lessons from such studies in three domains: incentives, social learning, and time-inconsistent preferences. The paper argues that we need both to continue testing existing theories and to start thinking of how the theories may be adapted to make sense of the field experiment results, many of which are starting to challenge them. The views expressed are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect those of the ECB. Abstract This survey discusses behavioral and experimental macroeconomics emphasiz- ing a complex systems perspective. The economy consists of boundedly rational heterogeneous agents who do not fully understand their complex environment and use simple decision heuristics. Central to our survey is the question under which conditions a complex macro-system of interacting agents may or may not coordinate on the rational equilibrium outcome. A general finding is that under positive expectations feedback (strategic complementarity) {where optimistic (pessimistic) expectations can cause a boom (bust){ coordination failures are quite common. The economy is then rather unstable and persistent aggre- gate fluctuations arise strongly amplified by coordination on trend-following behavior leading to (almost-)self-fulfilling equilibria. Heterogeneous expecta- tions and heuristics switching models match this observed micro and macro behaviour surprisingly well. We also discuss policy implications of this coordi- nation failure on the perfectly rational aggregate outcome and how policy can help to manage the self-organization process of a complex economic system. Traditionally, experiments have been run using pen-and-paper or in a computer lab. Pen-and-paper is time and resource consuming. Experiments in the lab require appropriate installations and impede the direct interaction among students. During the last two years, we have created fully elaborated packages to run a complete course in microeconomics principles using face-to-face experiments with mobile devices. The experiments are based on Bergstrom-Miller (2000), and we used classEx, a free online tool, to run them in the classroom. The packages were used at Universitat Pompeu Fabra with over 500 undergraduate students in the fall 2016. This paper presents our experience on classEx and the Bergstrom-Miller approach working in combination, and the lessons learned. Experimental economics Experimental economics is an alternative way to collect data for economic research. Apart of survey and time series, an experiment aims to get a data set on issues that are difficult or impossible to find in reality (Royal Swedish Academy of Science, 2002; Chaudhuri, 2009; Chakarvaty et al, 2011). For example, people don’t act or show cheating behavior, selfishness or strategic moves in a common field survey. These behaviors do not appear in time series data too. The only way to collect these data is to observe through experiments conducted in laboratories that guarantee total privacy to attendants.

Fundamental experimetric contributions by Ronald A. Fisher provided the foundation for a rich literature informing the design and analysis of economics experiments. Key components of this foundation include the concepts of randomization, independence and blocking. Experimetric analysis plays a central role in advancing economic models, and will gain further importance as scholars adopt increasingly sophisticated designed research programs to illuminate positive economic theory. 1. Introduction “Experimetrics” refers to formal procedures used in designed investigations of economic hypotheses. A series of pathbreaking experimetric contributions by Ronald A. Fisher, written largely during the 1920s and early 1930s, elucidated fundamental concepts in the design and analysis of experiments (see, e.g., Box, 1980 for a survey). He was first to obtain rigorous experimetric results on the importance of randomization, independence and blocking, and he created many powerful analysis tools that remain widely used, including Fisher’s non-parametric Exact Test (Fisher, 1926; see also Fisher, 1935). Controlled experiments allow compelling scientific inferences with respect to hypotheses of interest. Many economic experiments inform hypotheses regarding primitives assumed to be constant within an experiment (e.g., preferences or decision strategies), or the effects on economic outcomes of changes in institutions (e.g., 1 comparing different auction rules or unemployment regulations, see Vernon Smith entry on Experimental Economics). One conducts controlled experiments to inform economic hypotheses because relevant naturally occurring data typically include noise of unknown form and magnitude outside the investigator’s control. Econometric procedures can go some distance towards solving this problem, but even sophisticated approaches often allow only limited conclusions.

    Inflation and Welfare in the Laboratory∗y Janet Hua Jiang Daniela Puzzello Cathy Zhang Bank of Canada Indiana University Purdue University This version: January 2021 Abstract We develop an experimental framework to investigate the quantity theory of money and the effect of expected inflation on output and welfare based on the Rocheteau and Wright (2005) model of monetary exchange. We compare a laissez-faire policy with a fixed money supply and three policies with constant money growth where newly issued money is used to finance government spending, lump-sum transfers, or proportional transfers, respectively. The experimental results are largely consistent with theory. The quantity theory of money holds and higher money growth leads to higher inflation. Relative to laissez-faire, output and welfare are significantly lower with government spending, output is significantly lower with lump-sum transfers, while there are no significant real effects with proportional transfers. A substantial deviation from theory is that the detrimental effect of money growth depends on the implementation scheme and is weaker with lump-sum transfers relative to government spending. Introduction 1. The OECD Committee on Consumer Policy has hosted two one-day Roundtables, in 2005 and 2006, to hear from academic researchers and public officials from OECD countries about developments in economic research and public policy relating to the demand side of markets. In particular they were informed about developments in the emerging discipline of behavioural economics, with a focus on the study of consumer behaviour in market transactions. 2. The main points to emerge from the Roundtables are: that public policy should ensure that markets operate to deliver outcomes which are beneficial to consumers and to the economy as a whole; that competition policy is a means to an end, not an end in itself.
