1955 Daimler Conquest Century Drophead 1955 Daimler Conquest Century Drophead First Registered – 13.09.1955 Number Plate – RXR390 Chassis Number – 87774 Engine Number – 72429 Colour – Green & Silver Specific History This car has been in the current owner’s possession for 27 years. Since then he had fitted a new double duck hood which is hydraulically operated. It has 6‐ cylinder, twin S U carburettors, 100BHP with a pre selective gear box. Daimler workshop manual and service parts catalogue. History, receipts and logbook. General History The Daimler Company described its new Drophead Coupe thus: “With the power‐operated hood folded away you have a fast, open tourer that just laps up the miles. In seconds, when required, the hood comes up to the elegant "de ville" position; and a further simple adjustment gives you a snug closed car with the warmth and comfort of a saloon.” The Conquest saloon was released to the public in 1953 as a replacement for the Daimler Consort, but was a smaller car with better performance. The Conquest offered pedigree with pace at a reasonable price and still had luxurious, well‐appointed traditional woodgrain and leather interiors. The Daimler Conquest Century, so called as it offered 100hp from its 2,433cc over‐ head valve six‐cylinder engine, came with pre‐selector gearbox, Daimler fluid flywheel, and a separate chassis incorporating independent front suspension and Girling hydro‐mechanical brakes. One of approximately 234 Drophead Coupes made, this delightful 1955 Daimler appears to be in good condition having clearly been well cared for throughout its 64 years. .

A group of Westport people formed a party and hired Harry to take them on the trip. While staying in the Glacier area they made the Okarito Forks Hotel, now demolished, their base. This Cadillac was used by Newmans on the Motueka run most of its life. Another Cadillac bus the same was owned by the Wesport building firm, Neilson Bros who used it to transport their staff down to Franz Josef, where a replacement hotel was under construction. Harry Lemon later purchased several KB7 Internationals from Newmans as well as a swept up Aeroflite Type, which was formerly on the Wellington-Napier run. The company became a subsidiary of Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) in 1910, and was acquired by Jaguar Cars in 1960. Ownership of the Daimler marque stayed with Jaguar Cars through subsequent mergers with British Motor Holdings and British Leyland, remaining with Jaguar when the company regained its independence in 1984. In 1989 the Daimler badge transferred to the ownership of the Ford Motor Company when Jaguar Cars became a subsidiary of the American giant, and was subsequently incorporated into Ford's Premier Automotive Group. In March 2008 the Daimler brand was included in Ford's sale of Jaguar Land Rover to Tata Motors of India. As of 2006, the use of the Daimler brand was limited to one model, the Daimler Super Eight. As of 2011, the brand appears to be dormant. Origins of the name Confusingly, the name Daimler is used by two completely separate groups of car manufacturers. The history of both companies can be traced back to the German engineer Gottlieb Daimler who built the first four- wheeled car in 1889. This was the origin of the Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft, which is translated as Daimler Motor Company (aka, Daimler Germany), which has manufactured vehicles since the 1890s. Gottlieb Daimler died in 1900, having sold licences to use the Daimler name in a number of countries.
