  • Chungking Express.Pdf
Chungking Express BEFORE VIEWING – BEFORE READING SYNOPSIS TASK ■ With a partner, discuss and record your expectations of a film called Chungking Express which has been made in Hong Kong. After viewing the film you should compare notes with your partner to see how many of your expectations have been confirmed or contradicted. SYNOPSIS Cult Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wai’s Chungking Express is a stylish combination of romance, dead-pan comedy and film noir set in and around Hong Kong’s notorious Chunking Mansions, a complex of shabby hostels, bars and clubs teaming with illegal immigrants. The story centres on a small takeaway stall, the Midnight Express, which is frequented by two lovelorn Cops (223, Takeshi Kaneshiro and 633, Tony Leung Chiu Wai). They become involved with a mysterious drug dealer dressed in a blonde wig and sunglasses (Brigitte Lin), on the run from drug traffickers, and an impulsive young dreamer (Faye Wong) who works behind the counter of the Midnight Express. The central concerns of the film are identity and our reluctance to show, or to accept, who we truly are. The Brigitte Lin character wears a wig and sunglasses to hide her true self. Cop 223 refuses to accept the fact that his girlfriend has left him. The waitress (Faye Wong) secretly cleans the apartment for Cop 633 who avoids reading a goodbye note from his ex- girlfriend and is unable to realise that his apartment is getting cleaner and cleaner. BACKGROUND FOR WONG KAR WAI Wong Kar Wai belongs to the mid-1980s Second New Wave of Hong Kong filmmakers who continued to develop the innovative approaches initiated by the original Hong Kong New Wave, which included directors such as Tsui Hark, Ann Hui and Patrick Tam.

  • Brigitte Lin Receives the Golden Mulberry Lifetime Achievement Award at FEFF20 the 20Th Udine Far East Film Festival
Brigitte Lin Receives the Golden Mulberry Lifetime Achievement Award at FEFF20 The 20th Udine Far East Film Festival (FEFF20) was held earlier during 20-28 April 2018, with the Opening Ceremony held on 21 April. Over the years, FEFF has been keen on promoting Asian cinema in Europe and has elevated Udine from a small Italian city to the European epicenter of Asian cinema with an international industry event held annually. To celebrate its milestone twentieth year, FEFF had announced earlier that Brigitte LIN Ching Hsia, who is considered the goddess of the Chinese-language cinema, would be receiving the Golden Mulberry Lifetime Achievement Award. The organizer described Brigitte LIN as a respected actress in Chinese language cinema. Although having stepped away from the glamourous industry for years, her films are still very much loved by audience and considered greatly influential. In 1973, LIN shot to fame for her stunning performance in director SUNG Tsun-Shou’s “Outside the Window”, and continued to charm audiences around the world through the many classic roles she played. From the early 70s up to the mid 90s, she had built a truly impressive filmography of over 100 films. Her versatility ranges over various film genres, from sentimental melodramas, wuxia titles to thrillers; The cool, blonde assassin behind sunglasses in “Chungking Express” and the androgynous martial arts monarch in “Swordsman II” were the two roles which made her known to the European audiences. Apart from the Golden Mulberry Lifetime Achievement Award, the organizer also presented an intimate, precious retrospective of LIN’s filmography at the Visionario; selected works included “Red Dust” (1990) directed by YIM Ho, “The Bride with White Hair” (1993) directed by Ronny YU, “Chungking Express” (1994) directed by WONG Kar-wai and “New Dragon Gate Inn” (1992) directed by Raymond LEE.

  • Far East Film Festival 20
Far East Film Festival 20 Boel Ulfsdotter and Mats Björkin After running successfully for twenty years, the Far East Film Festival (FEFF) in Udine, Italy, has become established as the most important overseas festival devoted to East Asian popular cinema. The Hong Kong Film Festival remains one of its main sources ever since the Centro Espressioni Cinematografiche of Udine began to display an interest in East Asian cinema by organising its first programme of Hong Kong films in 1998. Another key source of inspiration for FEFF is the Busan Film Festival in South Korea, from which FEFF takes both recently released and restored popular films. Having experienced almost all editions of FEFF during the past two decades, we have been able to observe that the festival has been motivated by a strong wish to grow its Western audience’s knowledge of East Asian cinema. For many years it has screened a number of historical films accompanied by scholarly and critical publications which today are considered important resources for those interested in the cinema from this region. As regular members of its audience we have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to see numerous rare films; among the most memorable series were the Hong Kong Stories: The TV Works of Ann Hui (2009); Asia Sings (2006), on the modern East Asian musical genre; Asia Laughs (2011), on East Asian comedies; No Borders, No Limits: The World of Nikkatsu Action (2005); and Nudes! Guns! Ghosts! – The Sensational World of Shintoho (2010). In terms of film productions released within the previous eighteen months, and thus eligible for screening in competition in Udine, the festival has remained focused on a number of areas, namely the performance of the South Korean film industry, the rapid expansion of China’s mainland market, developments in Taiwan and the transformation of the Hong Kong film industry.

Master of Arts (Radio, Television and Film), December 2002, 78 pp., references, 64 titles. This project is an examination of the Hong Kong film industry, focusing on the years leading up to the handover of Hong Kong to communist China. The influence of classical Chinese culture on gender representation in martial arts films is examined in order to formulate an understanding of how these films use gender issues to negotiate a sense of cultural identity in the face of unprecedented political change. In particular, the films of Hong Kong action stars Michelle Yeoh and Brigitte Lin are studied within a feminist and cultural studies framework for indications of identity formation through the highlighting of gender issues. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First of all, I would like to thank the members of my committee all of whom gave me valuable suggestions and insights. I would also like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Staples who never failed to give me encouragement and always made me feel like a valuable member of our academic community.

Police Story (15) 警察故事 THU 25 FEB, 20:15 Dir Jackie Chan/1985 HK/99 mins/ Jackie Chan, Maggie Cheung, Brigitte Lin In Cantonese with English and Chinese subtitles Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan considers Police Story (1985) to be one of his very best films and he’s not wrong. The film was developed following Chan’s disappointment with The Protector (James Glickenhaus, 1985) which he felt had not showcased his talents in a productive and appealing manner. He therefore set about creating a vehicle that he felt would both display his acting talents and his athletic abilities. He also wished to make a film that he felt was less exploitative in terms of things such as female nudity. The film is also notable for the appearances of two of the most enduringly popular actresses in Hong Kong cinema, Brigitte Lin as Selina and Maggie Cheung as the hero’s girlfriend May. An altogether more wholesome vehicle than The Protector (particularly in its US cut), Police Story also consolidated Chan’s reputation as a fearless stuntman, something that would contribute greatly to his popularity. Police Story contains some of his most famous stunt work including a downhill car chase through a shanty town and a climactic sequence in a shopping mall where Chan smashes through countless panes of glass and slides down a pole through a series of live light bulbs resulting in severe burning to his hands. As he landed he also managed to dislocate his pelvis. As ever in Chan’s films, these ‘stunt accidents’ are recorded and played under the final credits to show audiences just how far Jackie Chan is willing to go to entertain them.

  • Dragon Fist in Conjunction with Their Home Campaigns
122 Appendix CONVERSION NOTES Fans of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons may want to use Dragon Fist in conjunction with their home campaigns. Although the Dragon Fist game is in many ways its own system, it is solidly based on AD&D, and crossovers can be handled with little difficulty. The two systems share some fundamental features: Characters from both games have Armor Class, hit points, spells, saving throws, etc. Most of the rules are fully compatible. The places that require are some conversion are discussed below. The Stunt System The most important difference between the two games is the stunt system. In traditional AD&D, characters get benefits for having high ability scores, and these bonuses are constantly in effect. In Dragon Fist, a character gets the bonus only by performing the right stunt. There may come a time when you want characters from Tianguo to fight opponents from other AD&D worlds, such as the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. Since the numbers are all compatible, the best thing to do is to let each character follow the rules of his or her home world. While this does mean that Dragon Fist characters can get larger bonuses due to the stunt system, characters from other AD&D worlds will tend to have a better AC, more magic items, and the continuous increased chance to hit of the THAC0 system. Initiative Dragon Fist uses an individual initiative system that’s very different than that of AD&D. Because the two are so incompatible, it is recommended that you use the standard AD&D group initiative system when mixing characters from different worlds.
