This program contains the most accurate graduation information available at press time. The appearance of a name here is presumptive of graduation, but not conclusive. Commencement Speakers Student speakers are nominated by faculty or their peers, with final selection by a faculty committee.

Kaitlyn Orien Silva Forsythe ’18 Kaitlyn Orien Silva Forsythe is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in digital arts. A DeLand native, Kait, as she is known to her friends and family, worked as editor-in-chief of Hatter Network, the student media organization on campus. She was in charge of all student media operations. This year, Kait guided a team of student journalists and artists in the production of The Reporter magazine, HatterNetwork.com, Touchstone literary and creative arts journal, and WHAT Radio.

Kait sang with Stetson University Women’s Chorale for three years; was a member of Kappa Pi, the international art honor society on campus; worked with the Senior Week Council; served a year on the Civic Engagement Committee, Stetson Votes; and is a founding member of Stetson’s Meditation Club.

At Stetson Showcase, she presented her senior project titled, “A Look into the Garment Industry’s Dirty Laundry,” a journalistic investigation on the ways in which the fashion industry affects the environment.

Kait’s works have been published in campus and local publications including The West Volusia Beacon, The Reporter, Touchstone, and HatterNetwork.com, as well as nationally on CollegeFashionista.com and ShambhalaTimes.org.

From a Puerto Rican family, Kait wants to understand and respond to the Spanish diaspora, and Puerto Rican identity and representation in America. She is moving to Chicago in August to pursue a career in journalism, using her digital arts degree to creatively communicate the stories that matter.

Lucas Ludwig Coura ’18 Lucas Ludwig Coura is graduating with a Bachelor of Music in voice and music theory.

Lucas was born in Vitória, Brazil, and emigrated to the United States as an infant. He grew up in Mineola, New York, and later moved to Tampa, Florida. He entered Stetson with the Class of 2017, and spent the majority of his undergraduate career training as a tenor. In his senior year, he made the decision to transition to singing countertenor and has since enjoyed significant success in auditions and competitions at Stetson and beyond.

As a student, Lucas was enthusiastic and eager to absorb as much information as possible. His interest in the mechanics of music led him to add a major in music theory. He also dabbled in the composition program at Stetson, winning one of three prizes in the 2017 Student Composition Contest.

Lucas was also a music tutor at Stetson, as well as a private voice teacher with Stetson’s Community School of Music. As a teacher, Lucas is passionate about helping students to unlock those “lightbulb” moments in which frustration finally coalesces into understanding.

In 2017, Lucas traveled with a group of students selected by the Apgar Foundation to study the sacred music of J.S. Bach and G.F. Händel in Germany and London. In his junior year, Lucas was inducted into the Beta Gamma chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda, the music honor society.

This fall, Lucas will be attending New England Conservatory in pursuit of his master’s degree in vocal performance. Etter McTeer Turner Award Presented during the May undergraduate commencement ceremony, the Etter McTeer Turner Award recognizes the graduating senior who has achieved the highest standard of excellence in academic performance, leadership, community service, personal character and integrity. The award was initiated by the J. Ollie Edmunds family through the Gualala Foundation to honor the service of the late Etter McTeer Turner, Stetson’s first woman Dean of Students. It provides a companion student award to the William Hugh McEniry Excellence in Teaching Award, also established by the Edmunds family to recognize deserving faculty. One student is selected for the Etter McTeer Turner Award. Hand Award for Community Impact The Hand Award for Community Impact celebrates the achievements of faculty serving the needs of the community, both the Stetson community and the community beyond the campus. An institution depends on its faculty to provide guidance to its students, expertise to its governance structure, leadership in its planning processes and connections to the larger community. We recognize that the life of a teacher is a life of service: service that goes beyond the classroom, service that takes inordinate time and energy. While service may at times seem to take faculty members away from their disciplines, it can become an important form of scholarly investigation, as when theoretical understandings are applied or tested in local communities. Academic service may also involve important leadership in disciplinary organizations at the regional, national or international level. These kinds of service—to our academic community, to our surrounding communities and state, to our disciplines, to the world—are among our most important contributions to knowledge and our most impressive statements of our values commitments. Stetson University is pleased that this Hand Award honors the contribution, achievement and impact in service by our faculty.

Hand Award for Research, Creative and Professional Activity Hand Research Awards celebrate the professional achievements of faculty at Stetson University. We recognize that faculty talent may be expressed in a variety of ways and that the criteria for determining excellence in different areas of scholarly inquiry or creative expression may vary. The Hand Research Awards emphasize the quality of the research or creative activity, the significance of the accomplishment within the faculty member’s field, and its contribution to the intellectual vibrancy and vitality of our campus. This Hand Award recognizes that excellence is to be found in innovative as well as traditional forms of scholarship; in work that contributes to the pedagogical discussion in a discipline or across disciplines as well as work that makes original contributions to knowledge; in work that redefines disciplinary knowledge as well as in work that reinforces it; and in major community outreach projects that demonstrate substantive disciplinary or interdisciplinary knowledge.

William Hugh McEniry Award for Excellence in Teaching In 1974, under John E. Johns’ presidency, Stetson University established the William Hugh McEniry Award for Excellence in Teaching to honor the memory of former dean of the university, William Hugh McEniry, Ph.D., who was credited with providing academic leadership for the university in the post-World War II era. Specifically, he was cited for his instrumental role in restructuring the curriculum, for strengthening the faculty and academic standards, and for elevating the prestige of the university.

McEniry was born in Bessemer, Alabama, in 1916. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1937 from Birmingham Southern College, his master’s degree in 1940 from Vanderbilt University and his doctorate in 1942 from Vanderbilt University. He came to Stetson University in 1940 as an assistant professor of English. While at Stetson University, McEniry served as chair of the English department and humanities division, dean of the College of Liberal Arts, and acting dean and later dean of the university. McEniry left Stetson University in 1967 to accept a position as vice chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he remained until his death in 1974. J. Ollie Edmunds, president of Stetson University during McEniry’s years at Stetson, lauded him as one of the finest academic administrators the university has ever had. It was upon his death that President Johns established the McEniry Award as a specified, endowed grant from an anonymous fund. Considered the university’s most prestigious award, it is based on “the highest attainment of teaching excellence as personified by Dean McEniry.”

The William Hugh McEniry Award for Excellence in Teaching is awarded each year at the undergraduate commencement ceremony in DeLand. The names of all past recipients are commenmorated on a bronze plaque displayed in Elizabeth Hall. Honorary Doctorate

Stetson University. It first appeared on a university catalog in 1891. The drawing was by an artist-in-residence and approved by President John F. Forbes, Henry DeLand and John B. Stetson, as well as by the Board of Trustees. The Latin motto, “Pro Deo et Veritate,” is translated “For God and Truth.” The lamp, signifying the “Light of Truth,” rests on the “Book of Wisdom.” Mace Maces were originally war instruments, but from the 13th century have been carried by the sergeant-at-arms of educational entities. The mace symbolizes the dignity and authority of the President and the Board of Trustees.

The Stetson University mace, designed by Episcopalian Canon Edward Nason West of the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, New York, was presented to President J. Ollie Edmunds in 1956. Gonfalons Gonfalons are thought to have originated in western Europe during the Middle Ages, when such banners displayed the personal coat of arms of a nobleman and were used as war flags hung from a horizontal bar and carried on a staff or suspended from a knight’s lance. As early as the 12th century, they were commonly used at state and religious ceremonies. Such pageantry finds a place today in the academic ceremonies of many and universities.

Prominently featuring the university seal and the name of the respective college or school, the gonfalons are richly hued in Stetson’s colors of green and white, accented by a luminous gold. The stately Elizabeth Hall cupola graces each gonfalon as a symbol of our heritage.

The bearers are outstanding members of the student body who have been selected by their respective dean for this honor. The Flag The university flag, designed by an alumna in 1976, features Stetson’s official seal in the center, surrounded by the university’s colors of green and white. Honor Cords/Pins Students who have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4-point scale are presented with university honor cords of green and white.

The Alumni Association hosts a variety of events, such as regional receptions across the country and Homecoming each year in DeLand. Staying connected to the university will ensure that you are notified of these events and that you continue to celebrate Stetson. Additional alumni benefits include: Stetson email for life; an opportunity to purchase an official Alumni Association class ring; an array of university publications; and the opportunity to purchase an alumni ID card, which allows for use of the Hollis Center and the duPont-Ball Library, as well as access to select School of Music performances. You also may actively participate in the Alumni Association by getting involved as an alumni volunteer–assisting with alumni events, student recruitment and career networking–and supporting the university with an annual gift. The most efficient way to get the latest news about Stetson University alumni events, services and programs is to visit the Alumni Association’s website at Stetson.edu/alumni, or follow our Facebook page. Be sure to update your contact information by contacting our office. Keeping your email address current will ensure that you receive local event invitations and the latest news from the university. We celebrate you today as you become a Stetson University graduate. You will now take your place in a global society as an engaged citizen, and the extended Stetson family welcomes you into our world. You can stay in touch by visiting our website at stetson.edu/alumni, emailing us at [email protected] or by calling 386-822-7480 or toll free at 800-688-HATS (4287). Again, congratulations on your achievements and best wishes for a great future!
