Department of English Schedule of Events 2017-2018 Tuesday, September 26, 3:30, Wittliff Gallery, Alkek Library Novelist and Endowed Chair in Creative Writing, Karen Russell, will be reading from her work. Karen won the 2012 National Magazine Award for fiction, and her first novel, Swamplandia!, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2011. She is a graduate of the Columbia MFA program, a 2011 Guggenheim Fellow, a 2012 Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin, and a recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” fellowship. Russell is the author of St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves, Vampires in the Lemon Grove: Stories, and Sleep Donation: A Novella. Wednesday, September 27, 5-6 pm, Flowers Hall 376 Senior Lecturer Flore Chevaillier will be conducting a workshop on writing an Academic Curriculum Vita for anyone who may be working on PhD applications, academic jobs, or just starting grad school and needing a frame of reference to build a CV. This is the first in a series of Professionalizing Workshops Flore is planning for the year. Tuesday, October 3, 3:30, Room G02 of Centennial Hall Assistant Professor Cecily Parks hosts a screening and conversation about Look & See: A Portrait of Wendell Berry. The film was executive produced by Robert Redford and Terrence Malick, and focuses on novelist, poet, essayist, farmer, and activist Wendell Berry, one of the more vital figures in the American environmental movement. The filmmaker, Laura Dunn, and James McWilliams (History), will stay afterward for a conversation and Q & A. The event is co- sponsored by History, Philosophy, Sociology, and the College of Liberal Arts. -

Piper Center for Creative Writing, we strive to help you in your own individual journey as a reader and a writer. This conference exists because we believe your voice, the unique person you are, adds intrinsic value to the larger conversation in creative writing. We believe in the power of community. We are not a singular voice, but many singular voices, resonating as everyone together. We believe in your words—how these words form a larger collective and become the catalysts for innovation, inspiration, motivation, and change. Along with who we are, where we are matters as well. It argues, convincingly, that the problem with banks is that they operate with vastly insufficient levels of equity capital, relative to their assets. Targeting return on equity, without consideration of risk, allows bankers to pay themselves egregiously, while making their institutions and the economy hugely unstable. Why Growth Matters: How Economic Growth in India Reduced Poverty and the Lessons for Other Developing Countries, by Jagdish Bhagwati and Arvind Panagariya, PublicAffairs, RRP£19.99/$28.99 Economic growth benefits the poor: that is this book’s theme. It is impossible to eliminate mass destitution in countries with low average incomes. So growth is a necessary condition for poverty alleviation. Is it also a sufficient condition? Again, yes, provided market-led liberalisation is sufficiently broad. India’s experience over the past two decades demonstrates this conclusively. Claire Vaye Watkins, Make a List of Everything You Have Lost Here is what I remember about how this billboard came to be: In the spring of 2020 Brent and I were both in the streets for Black lives, me in Portland, Oregon and Brent in Las Vegas. We noticed and compared the shapes of each city’s grieving, how each was failing to protect its people, protect their right to protest and their very lives. What we were seeing, I think, were these cities confessing their true allegiances: to the police state, to white supremacy, and perhaps most of all, to money. I would ride my bike to protests, towing my five-year-old daughter in a buggy behind me, and often we would end up in a downtown Portland shut down and boarded up. The Apple store had become a memorial. Graffiti covered storefronts and sidewalks, statues, the jail, state and federal buildings. Every civic surface seemed to be crying out. My daughter heard its cry, had questions about our city, our country. The last time she had questions like these was when we lived in Las Vegas. She’d been obsessed then, as I was when I was a girl, with that city’s billboards. My daughter couldn’t read back then, but she could feel plainly that the city—her grandmother’s city, her great grandmother’s city—was trying desperately to make itself understood. The billboards somehow disclosed to her the city’s ongoing and unacknowledged state of emergency, perhaps it was some combination of their size, the way they were elevated, and the sheer number of them. -
