• Tulum in Mexico
Tulum in Mexico Tulum is a seaside town in Mexico known for ancient Mayan sites and cenotes in Riviera Maya. Rising from the turquoise splendor of the many-hued Caribbean, Tulum is a seaside pueblo of man-made wonders and natural treasures. The town, still staying true to its origins, has emerged from being an off-the-beaten-path pit stop for backpackers to new-wave tourism destination. Practice snorkeling in the azure waters, take a canal trip through the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve in the afternoon, and book yourself a refreshing Temazcal session: to stay or to leave, therein lies the conundrum. Come here to bathe in its rustic elegance and go back revitalized with lots of memories. History This Mayan site was known as 'Zama', which means “place of the dawning sun.” A former trading post of the Mayan Civilization, it was among the last cities inhabited by the Mayans and flourished between the 13th and the 15th centuries. In 1518, a Spanish explorer Juan de Grijalva was the first European to arrive here. The word 'Tulum' means wall or fence in Mayan language. Things to Do in Tulum Tulum Ruins – More than 60 Mayan ruins and temples, perched on 12-meter-high cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea, are the numero uno reason to visit this region. A 784-m-long wall, made of limestone, encloses the tallest building of El Castillo or the castle. The Temple of the Frescoes features statues, carvings, and colorful frescoes. Other significant temples are: Temple of the Initial Series and the Temple of the Descending God.

Very few studies have been performed to evaluate the effect of culture conditions on the production or activity of active metabolites in algae. Previous studies suggest that the synthesis of bioactive compounds is strongly influenced by irradiance level. To investigate whether the antiproliferative activity of Udotea flabellum extracts is modified after cultivation, this green alga was cultured under four photon flux densities (PFD) for 30 days. After 10, 20, and 30 days, algae were extracted with dichloromethane: methanol and screened for antiproliferative activity against four human cancer cell lines (laryngeal—Hep-2, cervix—HeLa, cervix squamous— SiHa and nasopharynx—KB) by SRB assay.

Relying Atlantidae on a small (< 14 mm), delicate aragonite shell and living in the upper ocean means that, in common with Atlanta pteropods, atlantids are likely to be affected by imminent ocean changes. Variable shell morphology and Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (mtCO1) widespread distributions indicate that the family is more diverse than the 23 currently known species. DNA barcoding Uncovering this diversity is fundamental to determining the distribution of atlantids and to understanding Planktonic gastropods their environmental tolerances.

  • Photosynthetic Responses of Halimeda Scabra (Chlorophyta, Bryopsidales) to Interactive Effects of Temperature, Ph, and Nutrients and Its Carbon Pathways
Photosynthetic responses of Halimeda scabra (Chlorophyta, Bryopsidales) to interactive effects of temperature, pH, and nutrients and its carbon pathways Daily Zuñiga-Rios, Román Manuel Vásquez-Elizondo, Edgar Caamal and Daniel Robledo Department of Marine Resources, Cinvestav, Merida, Yucatan, Mexico ABSTRACT In this study, we evaluated the interactive effects of temperature, pH, and nutrients on photosynthetic performance in the calcareous tropical macroalga Halimeda scabra. A significant interaction among these factors on gross photosynthesis (Pgross) was found. The highest values of Pgross were reached at the highest temperature, pH, and nutrient enrichment tested and similarly in the control treatment (no added nutrients) ◦ at 33 C at the lowest pH. The Q10 Pgross values confirmed the effect of temperature − only under nutrient enrichment scenarios. Besides the above, bicarbonate (HCO3 ) absorption was assessed by the content of carbon stable isotope (δ13C) in algae tissue and by its incorporation into photosynthetic products, as well as by carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibitors (Acetazolamide, AZ and Ethoxyzolamide, EZ) assays. The labeling 13 − of δ C revealed this species uses both, CO2 and HCO3 forms of Ci relying on a CO2 Concentration Mechanism (CCM). These results were validated by the EZ-AZ inhibition assays in which photosynthesis inhibition was observed, indicating the action of internal CA, whereas AZ inhibitor did not affect maximum photosynthesis (Pmax). The incorporation of 13C isotope into aspartate in light and dark treatments
