REVEREND MIRIAM WRITES…

It really is difcult to know what to write this month; I am writing this at the end of May. In any other year, it would be fairly easy to predict what July might bring. This time though, what with our changeable weather, the changeable nature of the pandemic and the last minute decision making that goes with it, we may all be out enjoying holidays and café visits or we may still be

Page 2 of 7 doing limited things with extreme caution. Our churches have risen to the challenge of preparing for ‘just in case’… Fundraising events have been planned outside where possible, and have covid- safety procedures in place to ensure everyone feels safe to atend. These fundraisers range from book and cake stalls to fetes, dog shows and concerts. Please do support these events, as the fnancial situation in the church has now become quite desperate. Even if you don’t use your church on a regular basis, you might want to use it one day; parish churches are there for everyone who lives in the village, for Christenings, weddings and funerals, Carol services and Easter celebrations but churches receive no money from the government or the national church, and as you might imagine, big medieval buildings need a lot of looking after. If everyone in all our villages contributed the price of a cofee just once a month, it might be enough to keep our heads above the water. If everyone contributed the price of a cofee once a week, it would ensure the future of our churches, and pay for enough ministers to ensure that we can be there for you when you need us. Nationally, many church buildings are closing down and falling into ruin, but we are determined not to let that happen here. If you are able, please help your village church to survive by seting up a monthly direct debit or standing order. Every frst Sunday of the month, starting with July 4th, we are holding a Benefce service (that’s when all the congregations from all our 17 villages join together at one church), and we really hope that in July we will be able to have a real celebration of being back in church in person. Of course, things may yet change, but if we do have the kind of service we are planning, why not come along and join the celebration? If things do go to plan and there are no restrictions by then, we will sing, give thanks for seeing the back of the pandemic, and share refreshments afterwards. See our FaceBook page and Website for information nearer the time. We’d love to welcome you there… and if not, we hope you’ll enjoy the events we have organised throughout the summer. Revd Miriam Fyfe

MIRIAM WRITES…

The sad news of the death of Reverend Jonathan Boston, previously Rector of some of our parishes from 1997—2006 came as a shock to many as Jonathan was such a big part of village life for so many years. Our condolences go out to all those mourn his passing, especially his family and closest friends. May he rest in peace. Often it happens that the time between submiting and publishing items in this magazine means that pieces are out of date by the time it lands on your doorstep. We are now producing, in addition to the information we publish in this magazine the magazine, a weekly email with up to date information on services and other news. If you would like to receive this email (always blind copied; your email won’t be used for any other purpose than Church information updates and will never be shared), please email me: [email protected] and I will ensure you receive the email each week. For the walkers and the environmentally aware among you, here is news of a pilgrimage taking place in August which passes through our benefce. We will be ofering waystations and hospitality for those participating. This is their press release: COP26 Pilgrimage Great Yarmouth to King’s Lynn 21st - 29th August Page 5 of 7 Quakers and the Church of in are facilitating a multi-faith pilgrimage/journey across Norfolk, joining with others towards Glasgow, where the COP26 climate summit will take place in November. The pilgrimage is planned as a relay from Quaker meeting house to meeting house or church to church, starting from Great Yarmouth on Saturday 21st August and following the Cross-Norfolk Trail, through Norwich on Tuesday 24th, before arriving in King’s Lynn on Sunday 29th August. At King’s Lynn the pilgrims will hopefully ‘pass on the baton’ to another group in the next county, as part of other pilgrimages that are taking place across the country. The idea is that anyone can participate by walking, riding a bike or even geting a bus or train. Other groups will start from diferent locations and act as tributaries to the main route joining at convenient points. The pilgrimage welcomes all those of faith or none to join together to express their urgent concern that COP26 produces realistic commitments to the radical changes needed to save the planet from ecological disaster. All are welcome to be involved by: • walking part or all of the route with the group • writing a prayer and leaving it at one of the ‘waystation’ churches or meeting houses to be carried by the pilgrims to King’s Lynn • writing a leter to the Prime Minister and leaving it at one of the ‘waystations’, to be posted together with others from King’s Lynn. For more information and to get involved, please visit www.multifaithpilgrimage.org or contact [email protected], or for this area, [email protected]

SHAWN WRITES… It’s time to say good bye and thank you…

It’s been just over 10 months since I arrived in Launditch and the Upper Nar Benefce, and it’s now time to say my good bye and thank ‘yous’ as I move to shepherding my own parish. Being a curate for three years, which is sort of an apprentice priest is a funny thing. We train hard at vicar school and then continue our training on the job so to speak. My frst two years of curacy were in Norwich, in the city and as time progressed I became more aware of my calling to rural ministry. Thanks to Heather, Julia and Miriam, a place was found for me within the Ministry Team where I have been so happy. Starting a new job during the pandemic has been a challenge, I learnt new technological skills I never thought possible, new words were added to my vocabulary, and zoom was one of the major ones. We, like so many others zoomed everything, from church services, to meetings, to cofee mornings, and it was through these zooms that I met so many of you and began to be part of our benefce. A benefce with many beautiful churches and villages, and so many welcoming people. People with hopes and dreams of keeping their churches open as places where all can fnd a spiritual home. These have been difcult times for everyone, including the Church, and sadly keeping all of our church buildings open throughout the year will also prove to be a challenge, but one that might still be met if everyone in our villages contributes fnancially, even a litle towards the upkeep of these wonderful spaces. But we know that the church isn’t just about the building, it’s about the people who make up this family, or congregations, to which all are welcome.

Page 6 of 7 And it is to our congregations and to all who have made my experience here overwhelmingly good that I would like to say thank you. Thank you for inspiring me to work for the Church in rural locations, thank you for sharing with me your love of sacred buildings, thank you for serving the Church so faithfully for so many years because you know that there is love, joy, and hope to be found in Jesus, and that He helps us discover who we truly are, and what really maters. I will miss you, but I will not forget you or how you welcomed me on my journey as a priest. And a very big thank you to the Rev’d Miriam for being an inspiration, a great role model and a wonderful colleague to work with. May God’s blessing be upon each and everyone of you, now and always Farewell from your Curate Mthr Shawn Marie

JULIA WRITES…

Thank you to all of you who made my leaving service so memorable at Gressenhall Church on Sunday June 27th. There was such a lovely atmosphere in the church and it was wonderful to have live singing courtesy of The Gressenhall Sextet accompanied by Sue Davis who came together at short notice for this occasion. We had hoped to have the full choir but with restrictions on singing still in place we were delighted to be able to listen to some of our favourite hymns so beautifully sung. The church looked its best with glorious fowers and we had some fabulous refreshments after the service. I was overwhelmed by the kindness of your gifts and would like to thank all who contributed. I'm taking a break to get used to retirement but hope to continue to minister amongst you in the future but in a reduced capacity - apart from anything else we have a wedding to plan! With my very best wishes. Reverend Julia
