Take a look at some recent work completed by pupils from various year groups. Here are some fantastic examples of mobile phone designs produced using 3D Computer Aided Design by some year 9 Pupils. Year 10 Product Design students have been casting their pewter designs having drawn and laser cut their moulds. Here is an early concept prototype for a new take on extension lead design. These talks have been invaluable to our students and they have given an accurate insight of what these jobs actually involve. Phlebotomist talk On the 16th November year 12 Health and Social Care students received a visit from a Phlebotomist who spoke about the work she does supporting the medical profession and on the 23rd November Paramedics visited pupils giving students an insight into their profession. Paramedic talk Information and photographs supplied by: Miss S Jarrett Computer Science & I.C.T Department News Newyddion yr Adran Cyfrifiaduron a T.G.Ch On Friday 17th November a group of year 9 girls visited Cardiff University School of Computer Science and informatics for their Cyber Girls First Day. The event is directed at girls who enjoy ICT to promote future study of Computer Science. They were given an insight into the career opportunities available in programming and cyber security. Only 12% of jobs in STEM (Science including Computer Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) subjects are filled by women, yet they constitute 51% of the population, so there are huge opportunities for girls right now. The day included a variety of presentations and activities. Speakers from GCHQ Cheltenham and the National Cyber Security Centre (who led the fight to defeat the ransomware virus when the NHS was hacked) explained how all types of people are needed in cyber security, and women often have the specific skills needed. Speakers from CISCO, whose networks carry more than 80% of the world’s telecommunications traffic, described the opportunities for girls in computer science careers, explaining that the gender pay gap evident in most careers isn’t an issue in the computing industry but less than 10% of computer science students are women. Our Brynteg Cyber Girls worked through a practical activity in one of Cardiff University’s huge computer suites, where they coded an encryption program in a language called Python, and were able to encrypt and de-encrypt messages to each other. The day ended with the girls being presented with a goody bag with lots of things, including a t-shirt and their own Rasberry Pi computer! Back in school we plan to run further events where these girls and others will be able to program the Rasberry Pi’s and other computer science activities. All our year 9 pupils will develop their programming skills in their ICT lessons this year. Information supplied by: Mr D Pearce Photographs courtesy of Bristol Grammar School Computer Science Department On Wednesday 22nd November a group of year 13 pupils visited the prestigious Bristol Grammar School for a Computer Science Inspiration day. There were talks from Professor Tom Crick M.B.E on how computer science is changing society and the challenges ahead. Eriol Fox, Tamsin Hodge and Lucia Velasco who are Women’s Tech Hub and STEM Ambassadors. They shared their experiences about working as developers in the software industry, interface design and geospatial data. The day finished with the charismatic Sam Aaron from the University of Cambridge, creator Sonic Pi, demonstrating the basics of composing and performing music through computer code. On Tuesday 12th December, Neil Aubin, Digital Advisor for Microsoft Services United Kingdom, will be visiting Brynteg School to deliver a computer programming workshop to a group of Year 9 girls. The purpose of the visit is to highlight the lack of females in the computing industry and encourage more females to pursue a career in this challenging, creative but very rewarding career. The first computer programmer in the world was a female from England named Ada Lovelace who was the poet Lord Byron’s daughter, she wrote code with Charles Babbage for his Analytical Engine in the 1830’s. All our year 9 pupils will develop their programming skills in their ICT lessons this year. It was great to see so many year 7 girls and boys giving it everything for the school team. Year 7 A + B battled it out in windy conditions v Porthcawl to draw the match 2-2. The player of the match went to Isabel Matthews & Niamh Patterson, and a gutsy performance from Milly Bayliss & Grace Parry. Well Done to all the girls involved! They scored great goals winning the match 5-0. Scorers were Charlotte Llewellyn, Emelia Lewis, Amelia Wyatt, Hannah Cooke and player of the match was Fearne Jenkins! Bendigedig! Pictured: year 9 hockey team Game played at Bae Baglan Year 7 played in the Rugby festival held at Porthcawl Comprehensive last Thursday. They played 4 games in total they won 2 and lost 2. The team put in some great performances playing some really nice rugby. Alexander Llewellyn was one of our stand out players throughout all four games and bagged himself a few tries! Year 7 also played Bae Baglan in very windy match on the new 4G surface. Despite the conditions the team continued to try and play an expansive style of rugby. Daniel Honeyfield, Cian John & Harry Griffiths played a vital role in driving Brynteg forward and making some superb tackles in defence! Try scorers were Alexander and Daniel. Well done to all the pupils that represented Brynteg! Year 8 played their Ospreys East Final on Tuesday also at Bae Baglan School.
