Take a look at some recent work completed by pupils from various year groups. Here are some fantastic examples of mobile phone designs produced using 3D Computer Aided Design by some year 9 Pupils. Year 10 Product Design students have been casting their pewter designs having drawn and laser cut their moulds. Here is an early concept prototype for a new take on extension lead design. A modular system of rotating power pods. Watch this space as the project develops over the coming months. These talks have been invaluable to our students and they have given an accurate insight of what these jobs actually involve. Phlebotomist talk On the 16th November year 12 Health and Social Care students received a visit from a Phlebotomist who spoke about the work she does supporting the medical profession and on the 23rd November Paramedics visited pupils giving students an insight into their profession. Paramedic talk Information and photographs supplied by: Miss S Jarrett Computer Science & I.C.T Department News Newyddion yr Adran Cyfrifiaduron a T.G.Ch On Friday 17th November a group of year 9 girls visited Cardiff University School of Computer Science and informatics for their Cyber Girls First Day. The event is directed at girls who enjoy ICT to promote future study of Computer Science. They were given an insight into the career opportunities available in programming and cyber security. Only 12% of jobs in STEM (Science including Computer Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) subjects are filled by women, yet they constitute 51% of the population, so there are huge opportunities for girls right now. The day included a variety of presentations and activities. Speakers from GCHQ Cheltenham and the National Cyber Security Centre (who led the fight to defeat the ransomware virus when the NHS was hacked) explained how all types of people are needed in cyber security, and women often have the specific skills needed. Speakers from CISCO, whose networks carry more than 80% of the world’s telecommunications traffic, described the opportunities for girls in computer science careers, explaining that the gender pay gap evident in most careers isn’t an issue in the computing industry but less than 10% of computer science students are women. Our Brynteg Cyber Girls worked through a practical activity in one of Cardiff University’s huge computer suites, where they coded an encryption program in a language called Python, and were able to encrypt and de-encrypt messages to each other. The day ended with the girls being presented with a goody bag with lots of things, including a t-shirt and their own Rasberry Pi computer! Back in school we plan to run further events where these girls and others will be able to program the Rasberry Pi’s and other computer science activities. All our year 9 pupils will develop their programming skills in their ICT lessons this year. Information supplied by: Mr D Pearce Photographs courtesy of Bristol Grammar School Computer Science Department On Wednesday 22nd November a group of year 13 pupils visited the prestigious Bristol Grammar School for a Computer Science Inspiration day. There were talks from Professor Tom Crick M.B.E on how computer science is changing society and the challenges ahead. Eriol Fox, Tamsin Hodge and Lucia Velasco who are Women’s Tech Hub and STEM Ambassadors. They shared their experiences about working as developers in the software industry, interface design and geospatial data. The day finished with the charismatic Sam Aaron from the University of Cambridge, creator Sonic Pi, demonstrating the basics of composing and performing music through computer code. On Tuesday 12th December, Neil Aubin, Digital Advisor for Microsoft Services United Kingdom, will be visiting Brynteg School to deliver a computer programming workshop to a group of Year 9 girls. The purpose of the visit is to highlight the lack of females in the computing industry and encourage more females to pursue a career in this challenging, creative but very rewarding career. The first computer programmer in the world was a female from England named Ada Lovelace who was the poet Lord Byron’s daughter, she wrote code with Charles Babbage for his Analytical Engine in the 1830’s. All our year 9 pupils will develop their programming skills in their ICT lessons this year. It was great to see so many year 7 girls and boys giving it everything for the school team. Year 7 A + B battled it out in windy conditions v Porthcawl to draw the match 2-2. The player of the match went to Isabel Matthews & Niamh Patterson, and a gutsy performance from Milly Bayliss & Grace Parry. Well Done to all the girls involved! They scored great goals winning the match 5-0. Scorers were Charlotte Llewellyn, Emelia Lewis, Amelia Wyatt, Hannah Cooke and player of the match was Fearne Jenkins! Bendigedig! Pictured: year 9 hockey team Game played at Bae Baglan Year 7 played in the Rugby festival held at Porthcawl Comprehensive last Thursday. They played 4 games in total they won 2 and lost 2. The team put in some great performances playing some really nice rugby. Alexander Llewellyn was one of our stand out players throughout all four games and bagged himself a few tries! Year 7 also played Bae Baglan in very windy match on the new 4G surface. Despite the conditions the team continued to try and play an expansive style of rugby. Daniel Honeyfield, Cian John & Harry Griffiths played a vital role in driving Brynteg forward and making some superb tackles in defence! Try scorers were Alexander and Daniel. Well done to all the pupils that represented Brynteg! Year 8 played their Ospreys East Final on Tuesday also at Bae Baglan School.

    LEED v Living Building Challenge: Critical Evaluation Vera Straka1, Lilia Sousedova 2 1Associate Professor, Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada 2Graduating Student, Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada Abstract LEED is entrenched in North America as one of the most prominent green building certification standard. LEED is not without flaws. It is developing to address some of its shortcomings, namely related to the building performance over building’s life span. New emerging green building rating systems such as Living Building Challenge (LBC) are much stricter and go beyond the building itself. LBC does not only consider actual building performance rather than the predicted one but it addresses its context. It encompasses humane scale, universal access, social justice, health and urban agriculture. It is much closer to the concept of net zero energy and it is thriving for net zero environmental impact. LEED Gold and Platinum buildings are reaching high environmental standards and number of certified b buildings is increasing exponentially. In this paper, four case studies of the top rated LEED office buildings in Southern Ontario are investigated. Common categories of LEED points scored by these building are described and their comparison matrix is presented. The summary of the case studies is used to define a typical LEED building. This building is then evaluated for compliance with LBC and imperatives not met are investigated in order to determine what strategies would need to be adopted to improve the LEED design. The projects which are candidates for LCB designation are studies to assist with identification of differences. Paper concludes with the findings of this comparison and discussion on their implication.

    NEWYDDION DINAS TYDDEWI ST DAVIDS CITY NEWS Gaeaf 2020 Winter Mayor’s Letter and Christmas Greetings As this is my first letter, I would like to thank the Councillors for electing me as the Mayor with my wife Sylvia as Mayoress of St Davids City Council, supported by Councillor Alan York as the Deputy Mayor. I will endeavour to serve the local community during this unprecedented time to the best of my ability. I also take this opportunity to thank my predecessor, Cllr Mike Chant and Mayoress Sue Chant for all the valuable community work they did and contributed to over the last two years. For those who do not know me, my formal Sikh name is Balbir Singh Sehmi, but I am known as Bira Sehmi. I was born in Nairobi, Kenya (pioneering Sikh family in East Africa last century). I was educated in Nairobi and London. I have worked in various well-known international architects’ practices in London, Surrey, and Hampshire. My wife is a local born farmer’s daughter (the late Perkin and Enid Jones) and I have been coming to St Davids since mid 1960’s. We have been full time residents since 2010 and I was elected as a City Councillor in May 2017. I am a committee member of St Davids Community Forum, Memory Cafe, Friends of Oriel y Parc and St Davids Historical Society. My interests are cooking, cricket and spiritual healing. Well what a year it has turned out be. This pandemic has affected us all in one way or another. During this pandemic, the local community has shown its strength and agility in assisting those who needed the most help in whichever way they could with their generous donations.

    Welsh Athletics Milestones Recalled by Clive Williams 1860 John Chambers holds a sports meeting at Hafod House, Aberystwyth - probably the first record of an athletics meeting being held in Wales 1865 Chambers organises “athletic sports” at Aberystwyth. 1865 William Richards, born in “Glamorgan” sets a world record for the mile with 4 mins. 17 ¼ seconds. 1871 St. David’s College Lampeter and Llandovery College hold athletics “sports” meetings. 1875 Newport Athletic Club formed and holds “athletic sports.” 1877 Cardiff-born William Gale achieves the phenomenal deed of walking 1,500 miles in 1,000 hours. He was the world’s leading pedestrian. 1879 Llanfair Caereinion Powys-born George Dunning sets a world 40 miles record at Stamford Bridge of 4:50.12. 1880 Newport AC represented by Richard Mullock at the formation of the AAA at The Randolph Hotel, Oxford - Chambers also there. 1881 Dunning effectively sets an inaugural world record for the half-marathon when he runs 1:13.46 on a track at Stamford Bridge. The distance is actually 13 miles 440 yards, i.e. further than the designated half marathon distance of 13 miles 192.5 yards. 1881 Dunning becomes the first Welsh born athlete to win the (English) National cross country title. 1882 Roath (Cardiff) Harriers formed. They amalgamated with Birchgrove (Cardiff) Harriers in 1968 to form Cardiff AAC.1890. 1890 Will Parry, born in Buttington, near Welshpool wins the (English) National cross country title for a third successive year. 1893 First Welsh amateur track championships held as part of an open sports meeting. Just 2 events held - 100 yards and mile won by Charles Thomas (Reading AC) and Hugh Fairlamb (Roath).
