    WEIMARPOLIS, Multi-disciplinary Journal of Urban Theory and Practice Vol. 1, Issue 2, pp. 53-64, ISSN 1869-1692 City of Displacement: On the unsteadiness of Berlin sites and sights1 Marc Schalenberg Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies Email: [email protected] Abstract This essay starts from the observation that the city of Berlin, throughout the 20th century, has been particularly prone to shift buildings in their entirety or in parts to other sites. These shiftings have to be seen against their specific backgrounds, such as war destruction, technological refurbishment, myth making, symbolic or memory politics by the respective political regime, resuming the “spirit” or name of a place for reasons of identification or marketing. But beyond those, the disposition to translocate can be understood as symptomatic in a city whose narratives, images and practices have been explicitly oriented towards the “new”, “unsteady” and “shiftable”. Attempts to remove material objects – not less than their meanings – are to be found in completely diverse political and cultural contexts. It seems an interesting challenge, therefore, to transcend the level of individual instances of displacements and try to test some concepts recently suggested in Urban Studies, like “habitus” or “intrinsic logic” for Berlin.     1 SYLLABUS for HIS 2721 Cities at War: Berlin Summer, 2018 Instructor: Brian M. Cohen; Program Director: Christie Herbert; Support Specialist: Andy Donahue Course Description This 3-credit course explores the experiences and memories of the people and culture of urban centers during times of war. Students will directly engage with the physical, social, cultural, and historical artifacts of the city under exploration, and thus, social and cultural, as well as military, histories will be studied. Students begin their examination of a city at war with an overview of the key historical and cultural features of the city under review, including the rise to power of the wartime government and the methods the political leadership utilizes to expand and consolidate power. Students continue their urban exploration by identifying the different groups of city inhabitants and exploring their experiences during wartime. Students conclude their study of cities at war with a critical examination of the process of reconstruction, historical memory/memorializing, and the inherent controversy of historical memory as the city rebuilds in a post-war era. Students are assessed throughout the course on their ability to actively engage and participate in the daily class activities as well as at the end of each of the three modules through a primary source analysis, critical analysis paper, and visual presentation. Upper division students will also lead a class discussion, critically respond to a reading, and complete additional historical thinking components for each assessment that demonstrate appropriate depth and analysis. Specifically, the Berlin at War study abroad course centers on that capital city’s history during WWII, from both German and Allied perspectives, though emphasis is placed on the “everyday” experiences of the diverse groups of Berlin citizens under Nazi rule and during wartime.

De Maio Department of Research, University IUAV of Venice, Italy Abstract When Edmund, the child star of Germania Anno Zero, crosses Voßstrasse to sell the faded relics to American soldiers visiting the ruined building of the new Reich Chancellery in the summer of 1948, the area around Potsdamer Platz, though still recognizable, is invaded by debris caused by the destruction of Allied bombing and all shots and tracking shots that Roberto Rossellini has handed down of the German capital are packed with these materials: ruins and rubble. Almost forty years later, Cassiel, an angel from Der Himmel über Berlin by Wim Wenders, accompanying the elderly poet who is unsuccessfully looking for Potsdamer Platz, crosses a vacant lot overgrown only by the fateful wall – that here saw its first line drawn on the ground – and a flyover. Where did the debris and the ruins of Berlin get to in the forty years that separate the two films? Potsdamer Platz where is it? Is it still possible that traces of the lost capital can be found anywhere and that pieces and fragments of the ruins as well have given, in spite of themselves, a new face to the geography of Berlin today? From these questions and from the story of the German mountains of debris, known as Trummerbergen, was conceived the topic for the research “Ruins, rubble and debris of the theaters of war: the problems of decontamination and disposal to the configuration of new landscapes”, that has been carried out by the research unit of the IUAV Architecture, Archaeology, landscape: theaters of war.

    IN SIGHT BUT OUT OF MIND: THE CONSTRUCTION OF MEMORY AT THREE ONCE STIGMATIZED SITES IN BERLIN AND POZNAŃ By Stephen Paul Naumann A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy German Studies 2012 ABSTRACT IN SIGHT BUT OUT OF MIND: THE CONSTRUCTION OF MEMORY AT THREE ONCE STIGMATIZED SITES IN BERLIN AND POZNAŃ By Stephen Paul Naumann This study explores cultural identity reflected in the urban landscape at three structures formerly identified with National Socialism: Berlin’s Olympiastadion (Olympic Stadium) and Siegessäule (Victory Column), and Poznań’s Zamek cesarski (formerly Kaiserschloss – or Imperial Castle). My analysis is based on local and state archival work, as well as the examination of literary, visual and media sources in both Germany and Poland. I conclude that after the structures were first used to project meaning from Cold War tropes, both tourism and the enhancement of local identity in the face of European and global influences eventually contributed to the shift in meaning at these spaces in both cities. Poznań’s Zamek cesarski, a palace first commissioned by German Kaiser Wilhelm II, became, with its dedication in 1910, a monument to Prussian-German imperialism in this multi- ethnic Polish-German-Jewish city. Rededicated by the new Polish republic after World War I, the structure was later remodeled by the Nazis for Hitler’s use. One of their most prominent additions is still visible today: the Führerbalkon, a balcony extending off the front of the building for Hitler to watch military parades.

  • 1 Postwar Berlin
    INTERMEDIATE CHAPTER POSTWAR BERLIN: 1945-1949 In preparation for our simulated or real walk to locations of Berlin that have significance for the 1945—1949 period, we will turn to three films: Wolfgang Staudte’s Die Mörder sind unter uns (1946), Gerhard Lamprecht’s Irgendwo in Berlin (1946); and Roberto Rosselini’s Germania anno zero (1948). The war-ravaged city on the screen is barely recognizable as Berlin. Other than the panoramic view of the bombarded Reichstag at the beginning of Germania anno zero and later the brief shots of Black Market activities in its vicinity, the films include no Berlin landmarks. In each a landscape of equalizing rubble dominates. Given the American and British saturation bombings started in early 1943 and heightened in the spring of 1945 (the British bombed at night, the Americans during the day), it is a miracle that any buildings remained more or less intact. Why some were saved while others were destroyed seems inexplicable, just as inexplicable as the intact rooms jutting into the landscape on steel props from the sites of otherwise demolished buildings. There is little evidence of the “Hurrah! We’re still alive!” feeling that supposedly animated Germans in 1945. Avoiding comments on the rubble, people move around in it as if it had been their natural surrounding their entire lives. No one worries about hidden explosives or about dropping into one of the many holes in the asphalt which off and on caused Berliners to land in subway tunnels. Focused on the present, on making it through the next day or merely the next hour, people simply cope with their hardships as best they can.

Limbach A DISSERTATION submitted to Michigan State University, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY History 2011 ABSTRACT UNSETTLED GERMANS: THE RECEPTION AND RESETTLEMENT OF EAST GERMAN REFUGEES IN WEST GERMANY, 1949-1961 By Eric H. Limbach This study focuses on the migration of East German refugees into West Berlin and West Germany between the establishment of the GDR and FRG in 1949 and the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, an influx that, over the course of twelve years, totaled more than three million individuals. While the newcomers were physically indistinguishable and, apart from a few regional differences, shared a common language, culture and religious background with those already residing in West Germany, the presence of these refugees, like that of many other groups of migrants, was still considered a significant danger to the public order – a perception that was deeply rooted in the historical context of migration in Germany. In response to the influx, the Federal Republic and West Berlin established a comprehensive registration process for refugees, which attempted to determine whether refugees had a valid reason for their flight, and set up temporary camps to accommodate those awaiting resettlement in West Germany. Longer-term solutions included the creation of new employment opportunities and the construction of adequate (and permanent) housing in West German cities. However, these efforts required the cooperation of organizations and agencies at several levels of government, and disagreements among the West German Länder, West Berlin, and the Federal Government had a significant impact on the reception process.
