The symposium, entitled “Rudolf Mansfeld and Plant Genetic Resources”, and dedicated to his life’s work and scientific legacy was co-organised by the Genetic Resources Section of the Gesellschaft für Pflanzenzüchtung (GPZ, Society for Plant Breeding), and the Gemeinschaft zur Förderung der Kulturpflanzenforschung in Gatersleben e.V. (Society for the Advancement of Cultivated Plant Research). Professor RUDOLF MANSFELD worked in Gatersleben between 1946 and 1960, and was the former head of the Department of “Systematik und Sortiment” (Systematics and World Collection of Cultivated Plants) of the former Institute of Cultivated Plant Research. He was a plant taxonomist from the famous Berlin school of ADOLF ENGLER, and he developed principles for the classification of cultivated plants. -

Eyzaguirre, editors ii HOME GARDENS AND IN SITU CONSERVATION OF PGR The International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) is an autonomous international scientific organization, supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). IPGRI’s mandate is to advance the conservation and use of genetic diversity for the well-being of present and future generations. IPGRI’s headquarters is based in Maccarese, near Rome, Italy, with offices in another 19 countries worldwide. The Institute operates through three programmes: (1) the Plant Genetic Resources Programme, (2) the CGIAR Genetic Resources Support Programme and (3) the International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain (INIBAP). The fourth chapter of the series about Rudolf Schlechter’s South-American orchids again presents abridged biographical information about the botanists and orchid collectors that formed part of Schlechter’s South-American network and who travelled and worked in those countries on the continent’s northern and Caribbean coasts, through Venezuela and Colombia. In the case of Colombia, we cross the isthmus of Darien and arrive for the first time on the Pacific coast of South America. As in other chapters, brief geographical and historical introductory outlines are presented for each of these countries, followed by a narrative on those orchidologists who visited the area, chronologically by the dates of their botanical collections. JÄGER: Dr. Klaus Werner zum 75. Geburtstag 3 Dr. Klaus Werner zum 75. Geburtstag In Landeshut (Schlesien) am Fuß des Riesengebirges kam Klaus Werner am 19. No- vember 1928 zur Welt. Sein Vater war Druckereibesitzer und Zeitungsverleger. Sicher ist so Klaus Werners hochgeschätzte Fähigkeit zum Korrigieren und sein strenges Achten auf guten deutschen Ausdruck zu erklären. Schlesien war damals eines der botanisch am besten erforschten Gebiete Deutschlands, und so wäre es kein Wunder gewesen, wenn der spätere Botaniker hier seine ersten An- regungen bekommen hätte. Aber wenn er sich auch erinnert, dass im Biologie unterricht besonders auf die im Gebiet endemische Viola ×porphyrea (später als Viola collina 4 Schlechtendalia 12 (2004) × V. odorata erkannt, Rabenfelsen bei Liebau) hingewiesen wurde, so wurde er doch erst viel später und aus ganz trivialem Anlass zum Botaniker. Die prägenden Erleb- nisse seiner frühen Jugend waren zunächst weit von Wissenschaft und Naturerlebnis entfernt. Nach dem vierjährigen Besuch der Volksschule und den ersten 4 Oberschul- jahren wurde der 15jährige mit seiner Klasse als Luftwaffenhelfer zum Dienst an der schweren Flak einberufen. Zunächst war er in Berlin eingesetzt, später in Oberschlesien. Hier erlebten die jungen Schüler den Angriff der vorrückenden Sowjetarme, gegen den sie sich mit Flakgeschüt- zen zur Wehr setzen mussten. Klaus Werner wurde am 22. Januar 1945 durch Granat- splitter an beiden Beinen verwundet. Mit dem letzten Lazarettzug konnte er aus dem Kessel bis nach Halle gebracht werden. Im Lazarett in der dortigen Wittekindschule erlebte er die letzten Tage des Krieges, sah, wie der Turm der Burg Giebichenstein von den Amerikanern zerschossen wurde. Als er am 26. -

We also present a complete bibliography relative to Schlechter’s production on the orchid floras of South American countries, with his network of orchid collectors, growers and other purveyors, and checklists of all the new taxa that he described from each individual country.
